Why does the video game company, Valve never make third games? I have two theory's.
1 They realize games would start to get bad after 3 games, so they don't want to even go there. But they made four Half Life games, non of which were actually thirds, so I have no idea.
2 They are waiting to release Team Fortress 3, Half Life 2: Episode 3, Portal 3 and Left for Dead 3 all at the same time. Maybe in a new bundle like the orange box. The reason it is taking so long is because they are making 4 games at once.
Post your theory's. Valve has to have a secret reason why they never make third games.
But I did have a point in my first theory. What would Portal 3 be about? Why would Chell go back into aperture? Maybe to save Ratman, but that would mean she would have to talk. I think Portal games are done.

I don't think they will make a Portal Trilogy, so they're probably going to make it tie in to HL3 somehow.
If you already have a good player base on the current game versions e.g. TF2 and CS:S, why bring out new ones? If you already have people interested and playing your current game as it is, why would you spend time and money to release something that may not appeal to the players. It would be better to spend that time and money on improving the current game.
Also, seeing as counter-strike:source and team fortress 2 don't really have a story line, why would they need to make another game? The only reason they would bring another one out is for graphical and engine improvments e.g. CS:GO.
Gabe made a deal with the devil in which he will be able to have a successful company for the price of never being able to make a legitimate 3rd sequel to a game.
The reason games typically go bad on the third is because a lot of games are trilogies. The end of a series always gets ridiculous hype and people expect some big, epic ending. If the third is just the next one in the series (like Morrowind) it doesn't apply.
However, a third Portal would be stupid and look like an obvious cash-in, which is the other reason games can become bad after 3.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
This is why. http://www.eurogamer...-revealing-them
They're going to make another Half-Life, it might be Half-Life3, Half-Life2 episode 3, or maybe Half-Life2 episode 2 part2, but they're going to.
They wouldn't just stop the series at such a cliffhanger.
"Part of the reason that we backed off talking so much about what was happening in the future is that when we've done that in the past, you know, with Half-Life 1 it was a year after we originally said it would be, Half-Life 2 basically if you go and read the forum posts apparently took us 50 or 60 years to get done, so we're trying to be careful not to get people too excited and then have to go and disappoint them." - Gabe Newell

I guess no one told them about 3.

It's been 5 years. I assumed we would at-least have a trailer by now.
They can program amazing games, yet they can't count to three.
And TF3 isn't going to come out for a looooong time. TF2 is still running strong and it's basically a new game from what it was back in 07.
