I already have been thinking of a shooter MMO, and have came up with the following design over the past few months. Long post warning.
Gameplay
2 sides are at war over a region in the world made up of 25 territories (which can be expanded as player count increases). Each territory is a combat map. Teams start off owning 12 territories each, and the first battle occurs over the central territory (With potentially other battles occurring if there are more than 500 players online).
Battles are 250 vs 250. Each battle map is itself split into 25 sections.
Each team is split into 5 regiments of 50. Each regiment is split into 5 squads of 10. A general commands the whole army. A Lieutenant leads each regiment and a Sergeant commands a squad.
Battles can only be won by fulfilling objectives (Which also may grant your team an advantage along with victory points) such as capture a tank factory, destroy enemy ammunition, eliminate the opposing general or sabotage an artillery placement.
Each battle lasts an hour. After this hour is over the winning side gains control of the territory and new battles begin. This continues until 1 side wins the whole campaign. You are required to play as just one side for each campaign, but between campaigns you may switch.
This is what forms the MMO part of the game.
Commanding the battles
Based on your performance at the end of a battle you will be given GP, LP and SP, which respectively stand for general points, lieutenant points and sergeant points. When a battle starts the 1 player with the most GP on each side gets to be general. The 5 players with the most LP on each side get to be Lieutenant and the 25 players with the most SP on each side get to be Sergeants.
Once you fulfill a commanding role your points for that role are reset to 0. This way the leaders are fairly picked in a system that is better than selecting randomly.
Generals give orders, but cannot specify who fulfills them. These can be "Defend location", or "Eliminate person".
Lieutenants assign squads to fulfill the Generals orders.
Sergeants command their squad and helps lead them to the goals assigned by Lieutenants and created by the General.
Creating a class + weaponry
Classes in this game are not balanced by strength but by cost. At the start of the battle only the cheapest selections can be used. Later into the battle you may use more expensive options.
Going beyond most games, not only can you customize the weapons and armor you use, but you may design the weapons themselves. The game is set in the 2050's, where weapons have become modular and you custom-select your parts from a wide range of options. Some parts are more expensive, and therefore more powerful than others. These result in a better gun, but something you won't be able to use until late-game.
For example, you can pick a shotgun grip that is accurate and a barrel that is long in an attempt to make a shotgun that is effective at long ranges. To compensate you pick an ammo clip with low capacity.
New gear is purchased using the in-game currency which you get by helping with objectives (Killing people is often required to complete objectives, but its the objective itself that gets the money). Most gear is relatively cheap and rarely takes more than about an hour of saving up, but the massive selection means you will struggle to get it all.
Lasers
This being the 2050's there is laser weaponry available. You are probably thinking "Well this is unrealistic" but this is going to be the first game with realistic laser weapons.
They do make sounds, but not the pew pew that you expect. During and after firing the sound of extremely powerful fans can be heard as they attempt to cool down the gun.
They have no recoil. Instead the difficulty is in staying on the target. You must continually hit the same general area for a short time to deal damage as damage increases the longer the laser stays on target.
Laser guns cannot make many shots before they have to be reloaded with a large, slow to move battery.
They are great for counter sniping (where the target may be unable to move) but very poor at close range.
I hope you like these ideas
You win this thread. Also, maybe another part of the laser weapons could be that they take a little while to charge up after you pull the trigger, and slow down your movement a lot while doing so. maybe bonus points for doing what leaders tell you to, and bonus points for killing enemy leaders?
It's unlikely that I'll find anyone willing to help me out. After all, I haven't stated anymore than, what one of my ideas? So it's probably not that convincing that I'm worth partnering with if only for my ideas.
There is a risk, too. There is the chance that someone that partners with me to make a game will end up wasting much of their time after figuring out I suck at writing and developing ideas.
But, remember; there is also the chance that the payoff will be phenomenal for anyone that works with me because my ideas end up being so innovative and sucessful. What I'm asking here is for someone with the kind of experience and skills I need to take a chance and work with me.

Ahh, I Love the Smell of Adventure in the Morning!
I don't really want to state many specifics on the ideas I have here, lest someone steal them before I can make them into a game, but here are the genres or concepts I have a game thought out for an MMORPG. Some of these ideas I don't have completely thought out, and some I've detailed to the letter.
- Zombie
- Steampunk / Techpunk
- Underground world
- A Hidden Land set in the 1800's
- Alien planet (It sounds done before, but I bet I have a new spin on it)
- Comic book-esque world (This has never, ever been done befre as an MMORPG, Ican gurantee that)
...and more ideas just a bit to complex to condense into a genre name. I can make up more ideas on a dime, just give me a genre, among other specifics, and I can make one up on the spot and flesh it out later. Also, one of my favorite things to do is take something crazy and make a very realistic, believable and immersive story and setting out of it.

their are positions for story writers on development teams, since this isn't working try changing the approach, seek to join a team, not for a team to join you.

Time to update the ol' rpg test. The ones I get the most are Tactician, Cleric, and Paladin
I'd really prefer to START the project, because then I could potentially control what the game is about, and also the project itself. If I just join a project, I won't be able to have much creative control over the many aspects of the game.
Also, finding a group of people already making an MMORPG is almost as hard as finding people that can start an MMORPG but haven't yet.
1. do as much work as you can without having to pay substantial amounts
2. in order to acquire finances for everything else, get either a loan or an already successful company to fund you so that they can take credit and a good sum of the cash
3. now that you have a cut make another one or work out a way to get a continuous though small pay from some feature of developed one

as he says in the video it takes about 60-100 million dollars to make an mmo and chances are that if you do make one not many people will want to play it because they are already playing a different one.
:/ not trying to be cynical or anything but this seems a bit far out of your reach.
"as he says in the video it takes about 60-100 million dollars to make an mmo"
...60 to 100 million dollars? You're reading something wrong, because there are PLENTY of small indie MMOs, and more on the way. He probably meant that absolutely massive corporate MMORPGs like 'World of Warcraft' cost that much to finish.
"chances are that if you do make one not many people will want to play it because they are already playing a different one"
I entirely disagree with that being any sort of information whatsoever. Sure, that could apply to maybe 3% of the market, where people are so invested in their 'World of Warcraft' account that they don't want to play anything else, but seriously? Seriously? The majority of the MMORPG market isn't going to say "Oh, look, a new game. Well, I'm not gonna play that, because I want to invest all of my time into this game forever and ever". I'm sorry, that just does not make sense.

I cant program that well right now and my drawing is attrocious but I do have a lot of ideas and I am good at research. Also, would you mind pming me with what you have so far? I would love to know the theme of the game and mabey help with some ideas and mabey help do some balancing. So, what ya say?

Warning, Care not given. Click it, cuz I am bored:
I'm sorry guys, I don't need too much help with ideas and concepts... though, I do admit I need some, I desperately need someone that can actually develop a MMORPG, which means A.) They know how to start an MMORPG and B.) Are knowledgeable about all things pertaining to developing an MMORPG.

I'm all about pursuing your goals and dreams.
I just started on my own little 2D game, though it's in C#.
Can't exactly help a lot with coding, as it is going to be in C++, but I can offer helping with some 3D modeling. I spend most of my time working on my own game, but I could spend some time working on some 3D models for you.

I'm sick of all the crappy, generic fantasy-themed bull that is spewed across my screen when I search "MMORPG". I'm sick of it. Can't anyone make anything original? Nope, guess not. I suppose it's up to me, then.
I won't lie, I'm naive. I may sound overly confident that I can make a better game than pretty much anyone, but honestly I just think that my ideas are creative, or at least mildly different. I don't know much about coding or designing a game per se, but I know what goes into it.
Most ambitious MMORPG projects fail due to being overly ambitious in that they just take so long to make, and thusly the development team gets bored with the lack of progress, falls apart, and the game follows. Another thing I'll admit... I'm young. REALLY young. I'm Thirteen years old, and I've dreamed of making my own since I was six. Heh, haven't we all? No? Well, still, you have to admit making a game would be sweet, especially an MMO.
Let me get to the point.
I don't really have any skills helpful to the actual production of the game. That being, I can't code, nor do modeling, nor do I really know anything about technology, much less designing a game, much much less designing an MMORPG.
Don't get me wrong, I'm good for something. Why else would I ask for help on the for creating a game? No one would take me seriously at all if I said I couldn't do anything other than make up a title for a game and choose a genre; anyone can do that. I can draw relatively well with a drawing program (Maybe I can't make anything that professional looking, but I could draw up concept art), and I can manage projects and organizations relatively well. But those aren't great skills, are they? No, what I offer anyone who wants to begin an MMORPG project with me is this:
I can develop story, setting, and concept ideas extremely well. Writing and coming up with ideas is my greatest strength, and my most convincing argument for my worth. Now, maybe I don't have a convincing way to describe why I'm a great writer and story artist, so let me just give you an example.
I have convinced many people over my age by multiple years in the past to help me with projects on online games, my most recent being my Minecraft Survival Server "UnderEarth". Not only do I obviously write in a persuasive manner because I have convinced people years over my age, some with coding experience to help me, but I believe I also have very good story ideas because many people have come to me on this recent project and told me how interesting and original my plotline and setting ideas were.
So there is some potential proof of my writing talents, but now, let me tell you why this is a good thing for developing an MMORPG.
People love creative, innovative, never-before-done stuff the best. Sure, copying some other guy's thing works up to a point, and only then in relative success, but doing something new and interesting always brings in the most people. If I can in fact come up with new and exciting ideas and concepts for a game, not only can I bring in a large crowd of people, but consider this:
It takes ideas to make a game anyway! You obviously cannot finish a game without having put out many ideas for how the gameplay mechanics work and defining how the game functions and what players can do, so with a good ideas artist, you can go very, very far in game development.
Now, in closing, you must be wondering why I think that I can possibly start an MMORPG project off by recruiting on the Minecraft Forums. Well, why not? Many Minecraftgoers are of the mature and (somewhat) intelligent age of 16 - 20, and a considerably large amount have coding and technological experience of some kind, so... I must say, this is my best bet.
I know, it seems absurd, crazy, and overly-ambitious to think that I can possibly find someone that knows something about video game design on the Minecraft Forums. But doing absurd, crazy, overly-ambitious stuff is what can get great things started. Wish me luck... or even join me! Who knows? Maybe this craziness could work.
If you are knowledgeable in coding, modeling, designing games, creating and managing websites, starting game development, or are proficient in some other sort of technological skill useful to creating an MMORPG, please apply here on the topic with a summary of what you can do!
I've read that C++ is a more all-around useful scripting language for making games and C# is a bit more restricted, so I would prefer that I find someone proficient or excellent in C++.
I'm afraid you have run into a newb member who picked this topic off the recent post page and believed you were working on a mod or had it already implemented on a server.

Did you guess sharks? Because you would be wrong. The correct answer is nobody. Nobody but you is that pointlessly cruel.

If you plan on doing the former, your gonna need some good servers, which are expensive.
1. do as much work as you can without having to pay substantial amounts
2. in order to acquire finances for everything else, get either a loan or an already successful company to fund you so that they can take credit and a good sum of the cash
