I want to investigate what people think about non-cubic, but still voxelized landscape. It looks like this:
Of course, this techique is only applicable to natural landscapes/materials, manmande structures should be represented with cubes as normal :smile.gif:
How HD textures will fit in the such world? Will it reqire a non-cubic entities and mobs too?
P.S. I know that that's impossible to implement in Minecraft today or ever, this topic is created only to determine, what people think of the world that is not based on the square.
P.P.S. This can be not applicable for only Minecraft, but for some other sandbox, voxel-based game.
UPD: Resetted the poll, thread was in wrong place and results were not relevant.
Heck no! Half of the appeal of Minecraft (IMO) is its 64-bit retro-cubist look, and not only would this completely kill that, it looks FREAKIN' UGLY!!!!
Plus, where am I expected to find blocks in all that mess?
That hurt my head to look at. Also, everyone, except a few people will have the same reaction as the previous posters.
Also, I will stop playing Minecraft if it looks like this.

I dont have a sig or an avatar. (Except that (V), which is for Science! You monster.) They're like my name. Immaterial.

There would have to be different shapes of blocks which would greatly decrease performance on the chunk generation
No, geometry like this can be built as fast as cube-based.
the entire point of Minecraft is that everything is pixelated and blocky.
But it's blocky because its world is blocky :smile.gif: What if world will be smooth-shaped, how graphics style can look with that technology?
Plus, where am I expected to find blocks in all that mess?
This should be applied only for natural blocks such as dirt, stone, etc. All of manmande will consist of cubes, of course. World is still voxelized, but it only change its appearance to be more natual.

I meant how am I supposed to acquire cubes of construction material from a smooth surface like that, and how am I supposed to fit said cube on said surface if it isn't perfectly level?
In Minecraft — yes. But what if it can be used in some other "dig, craft & build" game?
Isn't the Minecraft forums?

Never, not EVER for minecraft. For some other game, it could be fine. But these are the MINECRAFT forums. If you want to talk about this, go to the "Other games" forum.
Smooth landscape and cubic structures break the impression.
Structures are called structures because they are assembled from straight lines and geometric shapes :smile.gif: Making the manmade blocks cubic despite of smooth natural is needed to have an ability to create beautiful buildings and other structures. But they may be supplemented with additional blocks of different shapes, like slopes, corners, furniture and so on.

Plus, squares no fit on (Whatever that is) sort of landscape.

Manmade blocks will be snapped to the cubic grid as normal. Here's the sample of some manmade (gray) pillar, which is built on smoothed landscape:
That's the main point of an idea, natural blocks can have different (not only 90°) inclines, but all manmade will be cubic and perfect :smile.gif:
Still think the current way of "everything is cubes" would work best...

the mathematics behind it would be simple enough so that the hardware doesnt have to stress too much during chunk generation.
it looks much more natural too
Always welcome to help. *Bows*
You seem more sensible then I first thought. :smile.gif:
