So, we usually run a StarBound server along side with our Minecraft server... but the SB Dev's are just horrendous. Every patch they release seems to break something or another. Their last major release, worked fine!! Then a day later, they decide to hot-patch it... BROKEN!!! It's just amazing how they break something which works. Guess I'll wait another six months before attempting to run their server software again.
On the plus side of things, Space Engineer has some GREAT developers. They listen and actually fix things. I know they have had a few bad patches which have really made for some servers you cannot run, but y'know what... they at least acknowledge the problems and fix it within a day or two... unlike some Dev's... I'm looking at you, SB Dev's.
So, game developers huh.... some good, some bad. How about Mojangs? Is waiting a year for 1.9 worth it?
Maybe if you didn't use such an old OS? The issue isn't with the update, as it would effect everyone, but this is not the case. The problem likely lies in the OS. The latest version of the game requires VC++2015. According to Microsoft, you need to have the OS fully updated and install it along side VC++2010.
Your contempt for Chucklefish is misplaced. You as an admin need to ensure your system is capable and compatible. This issue is on you, not them.

Starbound has 3 devs, SE has quite a few.

In appendium. If the SB Devs didn't care, why has Tiy been asking people how the recent updates have been performing? They do care, you are just bitter and unwilling to work out problems fully.

I don't think it's bitter to expect regular updates to your game.
I kickstarted it and was pretty excited, but SB pretty much lost my loyalty when they find it perfectly acceptable to go long stretches without updating anything.
Asking how things are going and actually taking charge of your game are two entirely different things. If you want to see excellent developers, hang out in the ARK steam forums for a while. Now those are guys who give a damn.

We are on the Minecraft forums, so I feel the need to point this out... xD
I don't think Starbound went QUITE that long. Whether or not they were releasing the unstable branch during that time, like Minecraft releases snapshots, or even if any development went on at all, I don't know. But either way. xD
Ok, for one, this is Off-Topic, General gaming... so wth Spyrogirl?
Secondly, I'm not bitter. Just stating how the game is. Works a couple days ago, they hot-fix, doesn't work. They have done this before as well. I actually yanked the server and kept it offline for 6 months previously, and with the faith I have in them, I think I'll do it again. It's amazing how it WAS working fine, up until that last patch... but no, you're right, our system is just too old to run it now lols...
Thirdly, this is server software. It shouldn't require a really up-to-date version of Windows. It is not running graphical software or anything fancy. My OS is updated fully and I have zero pending updates to the system. VC++ 2010 and 2015 are BOTH installed and both installed successfully.
Whether it's an old OS or not, they need to state that it is not supported if they plan on dropping the OS. When I first started running StarBound, it interested me because they advertised it as being non-resource intensive. Basically, the game would run on a toaster. That's how they always marketed it. Minecraft runs fine on the server... Space Engineers runs fine on the server... I have many other server applications running as well, but yet, StarBound is the only one which WILL NOT RUN.... so why is that? BECAUSE NOTHING ELSE HAS AN ISSUE RUNNING!
Don't call me bitter. Their Dev's are crap and I'll call 'em out on it. Why do you think Terraria people laugh at those who play StarBound??? Hmmm... I wonder...
Yes? And there are countless other online forums dedicated to general gaming, many more well-known than this one, so why would anyone without at least a marginal interest in Minecraft come here? I'm not trying to call anyone out, I'm just making a comparison. xD

The off-topic section is dedicated to anything non-minecraft related. Please be aware of this. If it was strictly Minecraft only we would just remove this section. But since there is a large community based in Off-Topic that will never happen.

They likely didn't know that it would have such a huge negative impact. I doubt they have a wide range of systems sitting and waiting to be tested on, which is where we, the beta testers (Yes, that is what we are) come in, to TEST the game and tell them what does and does not work.
You bought into a beta. Complaining that it has faults only makes you look bitter and self entitled.

The point I'm trying to make is that nobody signs up for the Minecraft Forums to go to the off-topic section. I suppose some members have been here for so long that they stopped caring about Minecraft and just made this forum their home. But it's safe to assume that the majority of people on minecraftforum.net like Minecraft, and you can't rag on one game for its long update times while (I assumed) ignoring this fault in a second game. This began as one of my usual light-hearted jokes, but I have to explain myself so I guess it's not that funny. xD
Starbound has a lot of issues. The biggest one is that it doesn't have any clear direction. This is because it's focus is mostly on it's art style, and the gameplay elements appear to take a backseat (or did, until recently). This is partly because they actually have so few programmers, and so many artsy types.
The biggest problem is all the claims that Starbound would show Terraria how it was done and Terraria would be doomed once Starbound was available. So much for that!
They have separated unstable and stable builds. if you are trying to use an unstable build I don't think instability should be a huge shock.

Starbound has been rather stable overall, recent events aside. The current issues stem from a Windows issue. Registry stuff gets messed up, people not keeping their systems updated, etc. The game's requirements had changed, and people just weren't ready for it, at no fault to Chucklefish.
After awhile I started to enjoy Starbound, but not after long it was very boring to me. I also had a bad first impression (not the games fault), I read reviews that the game has outstanding music (and it does), but I read reviews comparing Terraria to Starbound. So I was expected Terraria music in Starbound (and was surprised when I didn't hear that). Of course, now I know and I do think the soundtrack is very good. On the note of music, over 100 hours I have on starbound out of 130 hours is just playing music on multiplayer. That is the only reason I've stuck to the game.
I last played it in January, myself. 150 hours total. I'm waiting for it to get some reasonable direction and reach a later stage of completion for the moment, but I don't regret my purchase.
At any rate regardless of it being a beta/early access/pay us for the privilege of being our testers, scum/etc. title, "it's broken" is completely useless. A proper bug report is far more actionable and likely to give results- not ranting about the software on another forum that the devteam will never actually see.
It is an incredibly fun game to play with friends. I personally love the elements of Starbound, if I'm not mistaken it was just given a large update (Albeit an unstable one). Which I am yet to play.
