It just the story gains most, and there is no real "Confirmed Truth" so i believe the large appeal is the mystery of the story and how it can appear plain and yet incredibly deep with just one thought. Scott Cawthon did make either the world's sallowest game or perhaps the deepest (Depending on how deep you go).

Keep in mind that horror games are one of the most popular genres. Amnesia, Outlast, Slender, etc. are considered great horror games and are one of the best even to this day. Perhaps its the adrenaline you get when you're faced with a jumpscare or eerie being chasing after you. Or maybe it's because Horror games feel the most realistic, it's quite perplexing to understand what makes horror games great. Horror games like the ones I listed have an interesting plot, such as Daniel traveling an abandoned castle to regain his memory or Miles Upsher discovering what's happened to the asylum to be run over by a bunch of insane maniacs.
Now I believe FNAF is more in for the lore than it is for the game. Theres so much about it in just 4 games within one year. It's also quite an interesting theme, taking the setting of a pizzeria where strange events has happened over the years. And each character (protagonist and antagonist alike) play an important role in the game.
Now I think we would also have the fandom to come into play here. For every franchise, theres always that fandom. And it's the fandom that pretty much either makes it or lose it. And we already know how toxic the FNAF fandom is, and how far they've gotten to spread FNAF nonsense in every direction they can. And despite the dark and ominous feel the game has, the fandom is way too cheerful and colorful. And if that's not all, there is a ridiculous number of hentai and yaoi shippings of animatronics and guards, and it's really uncomfortable for some people. But maybe it could just be the opinions and views of some people, and some would say they just hate the fandom or the game in particular.
I'd happily be living without ever hearing of FNAF if it weren't for that fandom. They just HAVE to rub it in everywhere. The MC server I go on is full of FNAFpeoplethings. They make roleplays and use terrible FNAF skins and just generally annoy the living crap out of me.
Ok, so I can say that I have never allowed FNAF into my gaming experience and the longer that continues, the better off
it seems. I am fully aware of the following this game has gathered but why? What makes it so interesting? It's just a bunch
of cheesy jump scares. But obviously I felt my initial analysis of FNAF must have been wrong because why would it be so
popular if it was just jump scares? So I decided to watch a few videos on it... and... yeah, I could not bear to watch it, it was
exactly what I thought. So the only question was why is it so popular?
After digging around through tons of videos I found it was no coincidence. People actually enjoy this stuff. Which is kind of
messed up when you think about it. So you enjoy a spinning, gyrating photograph that depicts a mentally ill individual
who has lost the capacity to hold down their evening pea soup? How is that funny? Now I don't want this to seem like
a rant, I'm just trying to understand how and why these things are entertaining because I don't see the value personally.
Thats coming from someone who loves halloween but hates gore films lol just to give a bit of color to this.

People got different likes and dislikes. Who knew?
Thank you for that unnecessary retort. My question is how and why people like it? Or did I pretty much nail it?
I have my own perception but I want more than just one side of the coin. Ya know, for knowledge sake. Thats all.

The story is what intrigued most.
Dunno. I think it's stupid too. Over-the-top jumpscare horror games always seemed to have sold among the populous.
It's magic.
That's all I have.

You were a good section.
@spark speaking of the story, I watched the first game theory on it and it was a bit unnerving to learn of a real life
example of almost the exact same story. Some crazed killer kills 4 then himself in a pizza joint that just so happened
to have occult activity afterwards involving electronics. That was truly what made the series disgusting to me.
But in the off chance it was unrelated then it is a semi-decent story from what I understand.
For the others who replied regarding age, I just have such a hard time with games targeted toward kids...
Especially one that may or may not be based on a true story mostly.

Apparently FNAF SFM's are better than TF2 and other SFM's.
Like, look at this. It has about 2 million views, and it's Literally Bad. I mean, the animations are wank, the spelling is horrendous...
And then you have SFM's like this, that take alot of effort to make, but they get half as much views.
I don't get it.
I'm back
MUCH larger fanbase.
I don't know WHY I like FNAF, I just do...
Maybe it's the suspense...

Like others have said, it's the story, nobody has figured out the story yet, and it's interesting.
There will be no FNaF5 so don't worry, after the movie is out the fandom will slowly die.
Hasn't TF2 been there since 2006?
I'm back

And now there's even FNAF on the News Section! FNAF DOES go to far sometimes....
