I am thinking about buying terraria for my friends. Can I have some information on how it works, the gameplay, how beefy of a computer needed and other useful info?

To play Terraria, you need a video card with 512 MB of ram.
The highest processor you might want is a Pentium 4 with a clocking speed of 1 - 2 Ghz.
And maybe 4 GB of ram.
So a desktop computer of modern origin (2009 - 1015) should work.
You might want to head over to the Terraia wiki. There is a Youtube user by the name of Hero who plays it.

You can actually go with lower specs just fine, just go with 'retro' or 'trippy' lighting.
2 GB of ram is just fine. (Unless you are hosting a server, which you might need more, not sure)
Anyways Terraria is essentially a harder 2-D Minecraft with more things in it. It's more of an adventurous game rather than a building game. There is lots to explore and unlock. It will keep you busy for a while.
i have played quite a bit of terraria myself, and to be honest i find it a let down. i have not put more then about 10 hours into the game and i just don't think its really worth your time and money to play.

i think we should all use common sense and logic when we answer and ask a question but always stay open minded
just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife, big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed

Its different per person, some of my friends like it and some don't.
I've gone off Starbound because I feel it is too repetitive. Mine this, craft that, rinse and repeat. After a while it gets boring. And once you reach the endgame, there really isn't much further to do.
I played it for a while in the Upbeat Giraffe build and got to the Floran Hunting Party mission (a mid game quest) and then there was an update and something went wrong and my game crashed on startup. If only I had read about backing up the player data before hand. All that progress I made was gone when I got it working again as my player data got corrupted, and rather than start over again I decided to wait.

If you like the look of terraria then I recommend Starbound instead, it's Terraria but A LOT more
Starbound isn't half as good as terraria, plus its barely ever updated.
I haven't abandoned this forum just yet.
Yeah, Starbound is very disappointing in comparison. I totally recommend Terraria though, it's a fantastic game.

And anyway Terraria 1.3 is coming out soon.
