I thought that Sonic Lost World was pretty good (at least the 3DS version), but to each their own.

But TBH, i'm amazed Cpt. Falcon hasn't been confirmed yet.
I believe Nintendo said that Captain Falcon won't be making an appearance because his last game was on the Gamecube. I think that might be the same case for Mother characters as well, although we did get Earthbound on the Wii U's virtual console.
I really don't hope they bring Roy back. He is the worst representative of the franchise. Of all 18 Lords (main characters), Roy is by far the weakest and that means a lot.
I will have you know Roy was my favorite character in Melee.
I believe Nintendo bought out Sega. Not sure about that though.

Nope, they just made a deal for about 3 or so exclusive games.
(I think they're gonna get shafted on Sonic Boom though, it looks pretty mediocre from what I've seen at E3.)

I dunno why they'd throw out veteran characters, especially ones as well-liked as Captain Falcon, for having no new games. I mean, the last Star Fox game was on the DS. I'm still sticking with the thought that they're unlockable characters, since that was the case in SSB and Brawl.

I played the pre release demo. The future looks darn good at the moment. However, with the limited pool of characters that were playable for the event, no one really knows what missing characters may or may not have made it in as a result.
I don't find it weird at all. He's one of the most iconic video game characters ever made. The fact that we have Sonic, Mario, Mega Man, and Pac-Man in the same game is pretty great.
All I'm hoping for is that they don't make Samus suck again.
I'm guessing that they're both unlockables, so they don't want to spoil the surprise.
Eh hopefully, we will see when it comes out in Japan (first...) :/
The earthbound series haven't had new games since GBA, though they did release a game on Wii-U's virtual console which makes more sense for them to announce Ness, but even for brawl he wasn't actually announced till when Brawl was actually released i think.
But it was out. Also, I forgot about F-Zero being the first game to come to the Wii U's virtual console. I think we may still get see more Falcon Punches in SSB4...

I doubt they'd do this seeing how popular he is. Also when was the last time Mega Man was on Nintendo Console eh?

Hmm, I was about to say Pit but then I remember he has a game for the 3DS I believe.
I'm sure they'll add Wario since Game & Wario. I hope Waloogi is in it even the he has no games it would cool since Mario and Luigi are in, it would nice to have their counter parts to have both people.

Waluigi is sadly an assist trophy using a tennis racket again.
Hell, from what I saw from the E3 demos of the game, Mario appears to have his Wario-colored alt again, so I think they may have cut him.
(1.) It's just weird since I've only seen on Nintendo game with Pac-Man and that hasn't even come out yet.
There have been a lot of games with Pac-man released for Nintendo Consoles, as shown in this listing.
What makes him an odd character is very much related to the fact that Pac-man is not a Nintendo character, but Nintendo has been branching out with each installment to get more licensed characters from other companies.
Sega started releasing their games for Gamecube after they stopped manufacturing hardware.
As for the game, there is no barometer or falloff whereby a character had to appear recently on a recent console to be featured.
Particularly consider Ness on teh N64 installment. Earthbound was a MAJOR flop outside of Japan at the time so having Ness as a character was somewhat strange. Interestingly though it did spark interest in Earthbound itself- I can speak from experience since that is what got me to play Earthbound.
Also important to note: Game & Watch was in Melee and he didn't have any appearances since the 80's, so I don't think suggesting there is some temporal falloff and that a character had to appear recently to be featured in the game really has much merit.
It also seems unlikely they would cut any of the characters that appeared in the original N64 installment, except maybe Jigglypuff. (Mario, Luigi, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Captain Falcon, Ness, Donkey Kong, Samus). They might be locked, (as Ness is in Brawl iirc). Pit in Brawl had appeared in two games, the original NES launch title Kid Icarus, and something on Game boy advance which I forget. So their metric for determining who goes into the game has nothing to do with what they appeared in or how recently or how many times, and more to do with how fun the character would be to have in the game.
I just bought a 3ds myself ( (3DS XL, actually, last friday, should arrive this Thursday from Amazon), so this should be interesting as I recall seeing somewhere that the new Smash Brothers game may be available on the 3ds as well as the Wii U. Mario 3d land, the new Zelda, OOT 3D, and Mario Kart 7 will do just fine to start with, though.
Somewhat off-topic, The Nintendo franchises are expanding and adding innumerable characters that, for lack of a better word, are simply dumb.
Examples:
-Toadette
This just makes no sense. Traditionally the Toads have been genderless from the start- to match more consistently with the fact that they are mushrooms. Seems like a terrible filler character from Double Dash. The one saving grace is at least she is consistent with the design of the female mushroom characters in Super Mario RPG.
-Waluigi
I cannot express the amount of hatred that I harbour for this character. He was stupid in Mario Tennis for the N64 and he's been stupid ever since. A Terrible, flat, featureless character who's only purpose is the fill out the character selection lineup. It's such a cheap instance of doppleganger duplicity that it hurts. For one thing, Waluigi is a retarded name. If Wario was to have a brother and they wanted to make it completely obvious that he was supposed to be Wario's counterpart to Mario's Luigi they ought to have at least done something clever like called him Vuigi or something (L is the letter before M in the alphabet, and V is the letter before W). But no, instead they tack on crappy identification syllable and give him a colour that doesn't even make sense- Purple is the complementary colour to Yellow, but Red is not complementary to green. They should have made Wario's Brother be light blue, as that is the same hue-shift from yellow as Green is to Red.
-Baby Bowser
That is, in terms of being Bowser's son (Sunshine) as opposed to being, you know, Bowser as a Baby (Yoshi's Island). What a flat, pointless character who added nothing to the game nor to the franchise. Part of my dislike may be related thow his inception caused some question about the koopalings and at the time Nintendo claimed that the koopalings being Bowser's children was "non canon"... despite appearing in the instruction booklets for both Mario 3 as well as Super Mario World. You cannot reasonably retcon things like that, especially when you intend to replace them with a character that has the personality of wet cardboard. (I mean, at least the koopaling's names had a theme)
- Dry bones, Dry bowser, metal peach, metal mario, etc as playable characters.
Need I Explain why this is just dumb? I mean- come on. You may as well have "Mario without his hat" or "Peach with her hair up" as separate playable characters. It's just silly. And that Metal Peach from Mario Kart 8 is beyond a joke. Talk about arbitrary. Next up, "You've unlocked, Bowser with a cold!" or "Paraplegic Mario". Dry bones I can almost see, at least- but does "Dry bowser" actually appear anywhere other than the games for which he is a playable character?
Dry bones is a reoccurring enemy and has been in numerous games as well as spin offs. Why are you comparing him to a one off boss(dry bowser), a powerup from one game(metal mario), and the peach equivalent of waluigi?
(dry bowser is a boss in NSMB for the ds
EDIT: He apparently also shows up in NSMB2 and Mario 3d land)

They are pointless in the sense that they are simply some shift on an existing character.
Dry bones is just Koopa. Dry Bowser is just Bowser. Metal Mario is Mario; Metal Peach is just silly. It doesn't matter at any rate whether they appeared in any games- Dry Bones obviously dates back to SMB3, I'm well aware of that- but they aren't really "unique" characters, but rather characters chosen for no other purpose than to fill out the lineup. In the games they appeared they had purpose- I mean, Metal Mario was basically the replacement for an invincibility star, Dry Bones was equivalent of a Koopa in the Castle Object set and had it's own unique behaviour. In terms of a racing game they have nothing unique.
Of course in fairness in the Original Mario Kart there were effectively only four "characters"; Luigi was the same as Mario, Yoshi was the same as Peach, DK Jr was the same as Bowser, and Koopa was the same as Toad- differing only in appearance, but those characters were also rather central.
The "peach equivalent of waluigi" would be Daisy- but That is more justified since that dates back to Super Mario Land, which takes place outside of the mushroom kingdom, which makes it unsurprising that it would have a different leader. (Of course both Peach and Daisy are strange, going over 20 years without a coronation (making them Queen) is a bit unusual).
Interestingly, the approach they are taking with the new smash brothers looks to be eliminating such things. With Melee one character that sticks out to me was Dr Mario. Brawl did a tiny bit better, (I don';t remember any weird characters off-hand) but Mario Kart Wii and 8 just pack in the silly characters (the aforementioned dry bones, dry bowser, etc). With the new Smash Brothers it seems they are aiming to expand the lineup- but now they are expanding it by introducing new, popular characters from other franchises and companies, rather than add playable characters like Dry Bones.
If they add Duke Nukem they may have gone too far, though.
Count Bleck was never in any of the Smash Bros. games...? (besides the sticker)

First off, I completely agree with the rage against clones. Well, actually, there's only one clone that bothers me. I've played every Zelda game. Ganondorf has such a wide variety of attacks he could use. Why does he have to be clone?
Also, my bad. I misunderstood your argument about Roy. I wouldn't know any of that stuff, as the only Fire Emblem game I've played extensively is Awakening. Still, I think Lynn would have been a better choice as opposed to Roy.
