Steam groups actually do roleplaying? I feel like my whole life is a lie......
I for one only just a week past got a decent internet connection. (Screw obama care, aussies get NBN) Planning to start up again once I finally finish building my PC, and stop playing (dont shoot me) COD Zombies on my PS3

Technically Life as a Mob is still alive, whether or not it's quality of posts and amount of powerplaying that goes down there is going to improve is a different story altogether.
In fact, now that I think of it, RPing might be getting quite slow around the internet. While I didn't know Steam groups did roleplaying, did you know that Facebook is a place where roleplaying takes place as well?
I've seen rping in the freaking Nintendo Miiverse lol

That last sentence is important.
but lets face it, when most people think of RPing, they consider stuff like Skyrim to be completely. RPing is like D&D right, that game that all nerds obvously play? We don't exactly have a PR department to attract new players. All we get is waves of mediocre players who dont actually care and will just make cruddy rips of every possible TV Show/book/movie/game they can think of...... Then name it something else like 'CALL OF ATTACK ON NARUTO: MAZE RUNNING POKEMON.'
Suddenly I feel an urge to make COAONMRP

I always thought that if we could sustain some high quality RPs for a while we could draw back a small crowd. Attempted twice and failed both times. I have a really good new idea nearing completion, but i'm afraid to post it here for fear that it would die due to 'tl;dr syndrome'.
I still remember how I stumbled upon this section quite a few years ago. I was messing around with some average forum games in the off topic section and discovered the forum roleplaying section, after reading a few things one such RP struck my interest, Half Moon Academy. At the time I don't know what i was thinking, but it was so interesting that i read all 50-something pages just to catch up and be part of it. I posted the most cliche character my young mind at the time could think of and was accepted shortly after.
Of course back then quality wasn't as high as i nostalgically remember, I was terrible, but someone gave me a chance. Just wish i could have as much fun as I did back then on these same forums.
Indeed, sometimes I'm afraid that some RPs(with long intros), will end up dying out due to either lack of interest or just, as what Solawind has said, the 'tl;dr syndrome'.
I too have problems with walls of text, but not because of TL;DR but because I'd rather have the story unfold around me, rather than it all be explained before I even apply. This is something I've kept in mind for all RPs I make

Too bad that the history often involves the land you are on and it's history important story-wise.
Most people would roll with it but some go "Wait, which part exactly did you tell us that this mountain range was a LIVE, CITY-SIZED DRAGON?!"

Personal preference then, I guess. I got pretty used to the idea of having the lore tucked in a spoiler in the OP telling me which cities where were, what they had. Bare bones information but enough that you know what you're getting yourself into should you go there.
...though at this point I think you may have confused me for talking about the plot as opposed to the general information of the RP's setting.
I don't want to spoon feed players which thing exactly is what. I want to give them stuff like "oh hey theres this snowy mountain range with honorable barbarians in the east, but if that's not your thing, theres an massive desert a few leagues south that has this pretty neat sandstorm that's been blowing for forever" and have them make whatever of it.
Like if one guy thinks "oh theres this ancient god-worm thing in the desert making that sandstorm" or another goes "hey theres actually more to these mountains than these guys than simple barbarians it appears that they do xyz and cmk" then that's their's to run with.
Being given basic plot is fine, and expanding and compounding it under GM guidance is pretty great because that means progress is being made and people have enough interest to make stories of their own in the world you made, but if I walk into an RP not knowing where I am and what's around me, then I'd have to make my setting myself, and more often than not, that leads to conflicting backgrounds that after a long time, just stop making sense depending on which backgrounds other players have made or are rooting their characters in.

Now people, the reason why we often RP is because we feel overwhelmed by things like Skyrim.
At least that's why I RP. I just prefer creating my own worlds with creativity and mystery, rather than conforming to those with details all the way to horse armour.

The reason the player character in ES has no real backstory of their own is because it's your character, they don't want to say 'You are Bob Johnson and you are an accountant', because it's your story. Well, as long as your story involves whatever the current plot is.
RP's are generally much the same, although they can be vastly more linear.

The role of the GM/DM is to guide the story. I personally believe having to explain the backstory and then saying the RP is open world is not roleplaying but more cooperative storytelling. It's like saying "I have this really great idea but I don't where to take it, so I'll let you guys do it".
Some RPs need more complex backstories such as the fantasy and science fiction genres but the OP is not where you put it. Basic plot, just tell me where my character is and how they got here, let me find out about the city-sized dragons in the game.
If people put as much effort into their gameplay as they did the backstory, I would be enjoying a lot more RPs.
^ I think we are far too ingrained in our "open world" rps. The party can certainly all decide where to go and how they interact with the world, but one person has to take charge and say "Okay, after walking for awhile here is what we find". And a "GM" is especially important for narrating exciting/tense fights, people are essentially fighting themselves, and while it can be a great piece of literature, it sort of ruins the idea of there being adversaries when you are fighting yourself.
I'm considering making a tabletop RP. The mechanics are similar to 'Yu-Gi-Oh's Monster World' and 'Dungeons and Dragons'. Basically, you roll two 10-sided dice, one being in the tens place, and the other being in the ones place. The number made by the roll denotes the quality of the action. The lower the number, the better, with special effects happening on 00 and 99(the dice range is from 0-9 rather than 1-10).
A heavily-armored man charges at you with his sword drawn. Several other men follow behind him. You prepare for your counterattack.
If I rolled a 00(best possible outcome), then the result would probably look something like:
You prepare your stance and counterattack. The attack was so effective that it cleaved through his sword, his armor, and his head. His followers become demoralized at the sight and offer surrender.
While if I rolled a 99(worst possible outcome), then the result would would rather look like:
You prepare your stance, but slip on the wet floor. You try to get up, but it's too late, the man is already too close to you! He slams you with the pommel of his blade then quickly executes you.
Now, this is a very simple scenario. We haven't even taken other factors into account(armor rating, armor piercing, strength, luck, swordplay skill, etc.), but it does get more complicated. I've separated the factors into two; buffs and debuffs.
Buffs will subtract their amount by the dice's amount. For example, Player A has 7 luck and 4 swords skill. If I rolled a 20, then the result would be 9(because 20-(7+4)). Debuffs, on the other hand, will add their amount to the dice's amount. If Player A has a curse that resulted in -10 luck and -5 swords skill, and I had rolled a 20, then the result would be 35(because 20+(10+5)).
From a lorewise point of view, the RP itself will be held in the fantasy world of Iocrallan(eye-oh-kra-lan), the same RP world I used for the other RP's I made. There will be several changes however. There will be MANY races. While some of you may argue that humans already fill the role of most characters well due to their diversity, I believe that more races will help create the feel of a fantasy world. Also, the RP will be class based, with very many different types of classes to be chosen. If one doesn't like any classes from the list, then they may create a custom class(which requires approval).
So, suggestions? Criticism? Thoughts? Interested? I will make the interest check soon.
If I do not reply to my posts, I either have no internet connection, or am busy with college work. Alternatively, I may be writing up the post now. It all depends on the situation.

Wow, that was really awkward timing to post that.
Also, maybe don't refer to your world as if everybody else will immediately know what you're talking about. Never played one of your RP's, so I know nothing of this human diversity.
But the actual idea sounds alright.

Yeah, bad timing on my part. It just seemed that nobody was discussing anything at the time(4-6 day interval) so I felt like posting. Still, fault on my part.
Concerning how not many people know about my previous RPs, it's a fair point. As for human diversity, I meant in general. I believe that humans(or people, however you want to call them) have plenty of diversity. I mean, we have so many people in the world with many different personalities that it seems a little overkill to have multiple races. I had this discussion a while back, so it did raise some concern, because I assumed a few people had the same idea.

In layman's terms, that would be:
00 = Supercritical
01 - 09 = Critical
10 - 19 = Great
20 - 29 = Good
30 - 39 = Decent
40 - 49 = Mediocre
50 = Neutral
51 - 59 = Unexceptional
60 - 69 = Fair
70 - 79 = Poor
81 - 89 = Bad
90 - 98 = Terrible
99 = Fumble
Lets use a simple scenario for this.
