The Hightown morning is cool and quiet. People rush to their jobs and merchants shout out offers for everything imaginable. The city is bustling with activity. Everything almost seems back to normal well, accept the fact that things can never go back to normal. Hightown life is progressing smoothly when suddenly, the loud *rat tat* of a hammer echoes throughout the street. Many people try to find the source of the disturbance but find nothing. Suddenly, another *rat tat* is heard throughout the city, causing quite a bit of commotion. Very little construction has happened since the fall of civilization. Eventually, the source of the disturbance is revealed. A man wearing a black suit and tie hammers in a notice on many of the remnants of old power lines. The notice reads:
Calling All Gifted and Volunteers!
The Family needs your help with a very important mission!
If you are one of the Gifted within Hightown or are a individual looking to help the cause of the family, take a tag and come to the location marked on each tab. The Family will assure your safety. Payment will be decided on a case by case basis. Each volunteer will be paid handsomely along with being assured a long lasting job opportunity. There are big things in store for those who accept the opportunity.
There are a series of tags attached to each flier. Each of the tags reads:
The corner of Colfax and Speer, near the old Colorado Convention Center look for the man in the black suit. Be there by noon.
[Giovanni]
Giovanni hammered in each of the individual flyers in places all around the city. This was probably one of the riskiest jobs he could have taken up. Both the Masquerade and the Reds were looking for Gifted and they didn't take too kindly to public advertising. Giovanni wasn't worried, though. After all, he couldn't physically die. Even if he was shot at in a drive by shooting or killed while putting up one of the flyers, he would just come back to life a few hours later. Giovanni's only worry was that any Gifted actually showed up. The worst thing he could do was show up empty handed to The Father.
*rat tat*
The hammer continued to drive the nail further into the wooden pillar that used to be a power line.
*rat tat squish*
"Ouch!" Cried Giovanni, having hit his hand with the hammer. His index finger immediately started to swell up. Dang it, why couldn't I have gotten the ability not to feel pain? Giovanni clutched his hand as the flier that he was nailing up fell to the ground and a gust of wind blew it away. Giovanni tried desperately to catch the paper but it was to no avail. The flier flew higher and higher into the air, going far away from Giovanni. Meanwhile, his hand continued to swell with blood. Giovanni looked around for anybody who could help him but it seemed like the only clinic in the city was too far away from where he was right now.
Giovanni looked up at the sky. Using the position of the sun in the sky, Giovanni determined the time. He was already late for his meeting with the Gifted, if he were to get there on time, he would have to run. Giovanni began to sprint down Colfax Ave. at a speed that would put most professionals to shame. Whenever Giovanni ran, he would always forget the problems that he had, but this time, his hand was hurting a bit too much for him to forget about it. Giovanni tried to move his finger, he had relatively good mobility in the appendage. Good, so it's not broken. He thought. Maybe it'll heal overnight.
Eventually, Giovanni reached the Convention Center a little later than he should have. There seemed to already be people there looking around for "the man in the black suit." Giovanni strolled up to the side of the Convention Center. The building seemed to be in a very poor condition. The windows that surrounded the building were smashed in, the roofs and overhangs were caving in, and the statue of the blue bear leaning up against the side of the building had had its arms broken off and strewn in different places along the ground. Giovanni stood next to the bear and waited.

Kat sighed softly, slowly looking around the city before she saw what appeared to be paper flying around in the air and on the streets, slowly she walked over and plucked the flier up from the ground. She slowly read over the flier in curiosity before she tilted her head pulling one of the 'tabs' off from the paper and rips the paper up so no one else could look over it. Taking a deep breath she starts to jog to the described place with relative easy, on her way there she would find her way on top of the roofs of some of the more destroyed buildings and would soon reach the Convention Center, making quite an entrance as she accidentally trips and falls from a window face planting on the ground with a loud groan. Her hair splayed out around her as she lays on the ground, the shadows around her seeming to twitch and try to grow closer to her fallen form 'Such a awesome entrance, great job Kaitlyn..' she says in her mind.
Tyree walked down the street, a bag of her recently-aquired goods slung over her shoulder. She was on her way to the nearest trading post when she passed by the Convention Center. She saw another girl trip and fall from a raised window near the center. She hesitated and decided against her better judgement to walk over to her. "Hey... Are you all right? That was a pretty nasty spill..." She extended her hand to the dark-haired girl, squatting onto her knees. Despite having lived in Hightown for four years now, her voice still hadn't lost its Midwestern lull. She brushed her long, side-swept bangs out of her face as she rocked on her heels.

Kat groans softly, slowly taking the stranger's hand and pulling herself to her feet, once on her feet she starts to brush off her clothing, fixing her long black hair. The Shadows around her seem to slowly retreat back to their normal place once she looked relatively alright "Uhm...yea im...alright I guess...hurt a lot..." She says wincing as she rubs her nose slightly. After a few seconds she stretches and looks around, some of the other gifted looked at her chuckling and smirking, either at her tumbling on her face or her small body which made her grumble softly looking over and up to Tyree "Um, thanks for helping me up...whats your name? Mines Kat..." She says just telling her nickname.
"It wasn't nothing. My name's Tyree. Nice to meet you, Miss Kat." She hoisted her bag up from where it had slipped off her shoulder. She looked Kat up and down once now that she was standing upright. "You sure you all right? You didn't break anything?" She wanted to double-check, otherwise she would walk home with a pit in her stomach.

Kat looked up at Tyree blinking before giving a slow nod "Yea, Yea I'm alriiighht" She says giving a thumbs up and a smile as she dusts her clothes off once more. "You can go, I think some of the gifted are getting curious as to whats in your bags...." She mumbles glancing over to the others who watch both of them curiously. She starts to slowly push Tyree off "Shoo shoo, don't want someone nice getting hurt, we don't have enough of those in this world" She says quietly, the shadows around them trying to reach out for Kat as she moves but she simply brushes them away. She watches Tyree to make sure she would leave, if she did without incident she would start to wave as she left and walk slowly over to the group of gifted but after a while choose to be separate from them as some of them still snickered at her mistakes.
"Awesome," came the insensible response. In any normal circumstances, Tyree would have been put off by the girl's seemingly strange behavior. Unfortunately, there hadn't been any normal circumstances in four years. She shrugged, tightening her grip on her bag before turning on her heels and continuing her path to the trading depot. After a fifteen-minute, relatively bump-free transaction, Tyree made her way to the rundown hovel she and Jake called home. Her bag was filled with enough food and supplies to run the eatery for the next two days, and she prayed to whatever higher power still cared about the world's last inhabitants for good business and protection. She made her way inside the apartment to be greeted with a "Hey, Ree." and a short kiss on the lips.

Kat quietly sat alone away from the other gifted, mainly in the area where she could find the most shadows as she felt safe there as she looked around for the described man from the flier. She quietly twirls her finger in a circle the shadows in front of her seeming to spiral upwards very slowly before stopping and forming into a tentacle which waved back and forth the tip sharp and pointy. For a couple of seconds she just watched it with a curious look before patting it on the 'head' before it slowly drooped back into the shadows, once it was gone she boredly looked around for something interesting.
Giovanni stood and watched the various types of people scramble around. He knew that at least one of these people had to be the gifted he was looking for. Of course, the term "man in black" was incredibly vague so it was understandable that nobody had approached him yet. So, Giovanni decided to take matters into his own hands. He was going to introduce himself to some of these people to see if they were here to speak to him. He looked around for a brief period and saw a young woman lying on the ground, apparently having tripped on nothing in particular. He decided to pay no mind to her and continued surveying the landscape and, when he looked back at her, he saw a woman helping her up and he also saw the shadows around the young woman creeping inwards upon the pair. With a wave of her hand, the young woman caused the shadows to suddenly retreat.
Strange... Giovanni thought, I didn't think any Gifted could control shadows like that. He began to more closely inspect the young woman, using his aviators in order to hide his direct gaze. Giovanni watched as the young woman crawled into a dark corner and began to do something that Giovanni couldn't quite comprehend. She had summoned a shadowy tendril and was currently petting the tentacle as one would a pet. Unafraid, Giovanni approached the young lady.
He walked up close to her, "That's quite the feat," began Giovanni, motioning to the tentacle, "you are attracting a few dirty looks, though. People don't really trust the Gifted, trust me, I have experienced it first hand. Are you here for the... job opportunity?" Giovanni smirked and offered his hand to the sitting girl.

Kat would slowly look up at Giovanni the shadows seeming to darken around her before she casts her stare towards some other people who stare at her in disgust "I'm...used to not being liked by non gifted, especially given my...gift" she says and it seems everything around her becomes pitch black. Slowly color comes back even if its just back to normal shadows, She slowly got up stretching slightly as she ignores his hand "I need the money, so yea I guess I am here for the job...." She slowly eyes him, looking up at him with a curious look before she crosses her arms. "Are you the person that's offering the job?" She says curiously with a tilt of her head. While she waits for an answer the blackness surrounding her seem to dim then darken again, two shadowy tendrils slowly sliding up her legs seeming to stare at Giovanni with a menacing look.
Sei walked around the city with caution, but remained calm to react to any bad Gifteds. He wasn't aware until a while that his power had been on the whole time he'd began to enter the city, which made him look like a light-attracting magnet. Dealing living there wasn't easy at all, his once cheerful personality turned into cautious, and frightful almost. Aware that his powers could be useful, he decided that he would use it for good, at least he thought so. He continued to walk at a steady pace, making sure not to overreact to anything. A smile came on his face when he saw nothing that would endanger him, he sighed and stared into the sky. Someday he could be just a little friendlier with the people in Hightown, because he wanted to believe that not all the people there used their powers to harm people. So, he made a promise with himself to greet himself to any friendly people and maybe become friends with them as soon as possible.
Giovanni looked down at the young woman. She seemed slightly insulted by all the non-gifted looking at her. She said that she was used to it but the immediate change in her tone seemed to say otherwise. She seemed to be angered by the people staring at her. So much so that she lost slight control of her powers and the area around her became dark. Hmm... maybe this girl has control over more than just shadows. Thought Giovanni, No matter, The Teacher should be able to get the best, and maybe even worst out of all the Gifted and others who showed up. Suddenly, the area about the young woman became pitch black for a split second.
This caught Giovanni off guard and he backed up slightly. He soon regained his composure and crossed his arms. "Impressive. Yes, I am the man offering the job." Giovanni surveyed the young woman, seeing what exactly she was made of. He looked down at her legs and saw a pair of tentacles pointing at him. Slightly cocky, Giovanni said, "It seems that your friends don't exactly like me. Trust me, I won't harm you as long as you don't attempt to harm me." Giovanni smirked and tipped the rim of his aviators. He looked over the edge of the glasses at the young woman with a pair of sharp, green eyes. "If you don't mind me asking, who was that woman who helped you up back there?"

Kat quietly stared up at the strange man for a second or two before she cleared her throat the tendrils at her legs very hesitantly sliding back and melting into the ground. She glances down at the ground to make sure they went away and looked back up at the man with a tilt of her head, her mood seeming to change just a bit "Oh she was just a nice person helping me up from my uhm....mistake..." she says, a red hue appearing on her cheeks as she mentions her fall. As she waits for the next question she starts to pat and fix the skirt she wore and adjusted her black hoodie along with her black hair, it was clear that she preferred to wear black either to use it to her powers advantage or just liked that color. Idly she began to light thump her fingers on her lap which seemed to make the shadows darken then lighten very slowly, She seemed to quickly grow a little more agitated at the stares of others and snapped a very menacing looking glare to some of the normal people that looked at her in disgust which quickly turned to fear as they looked away.
Sei darted his eyes at the old man, he had respect for the elderly, but he was taken back when he asked of his powers. Not much people questioned about it, he thought the people there were used to it. But in any case, he sounded like a good person, a good start to get social with people. It was a good plan, one where he could have a start where he wouldn't be very lonely with nobody to talk with. Clearing his thoughts, he put on a good smile like he used to.
"Yes, I am aware of it, but you see, I don't really know how to make it go away," he laughed it off as if he was embarrassed, "Never mind that, are you new here? I haven't seen anyone like you before. "
He hoped to have a good impression to make friends, well, to be acquainted with in this case.
Giovanni looked down at the young woman. He was surprised that such a small person could hold such immense power. Of course, the virus didn't care who it gave superpowers, it was totally incapable of doing so. He examined her clothing. She wore black. Giovanni found it slightly serendipitous that a person who gained control over darkness would favor the color black but maybe she wore that color because of her powers. Maybe it was designed to act as camouflage in pitch darkness. The young woman in front of Giovanni seemed to be slightly afraid of him. It was understandable, a person of Giovanni's stature tended to intimidate people who were shorter than him. He decided to keep that thought to himself.
The young woman answers his question hesitantly. She was obviously embarrassed. Giovanni decided to calm her nerves by offering his alias. "Well, as I said, I am the one offering the job. They call me, the Survivalist. I work for the Family. I am looking for Gifted to help the Family with a very special series of tasks." Giovanni suddenly remembered something and thrust his hand into his bottom right pocket. He felt around for the piece of paper he kept in there just in case he died on a mission. He eventually found it and pulled his hand out of his pocket. "Pardon me but, what is your name?"

She blinks watching him curiously as he said who he was and that sort of stuff which didn't completely interest her as she boredly looked up at him for a bit before she shifts around staring at him intently when he thrusted his hand into his pocket. She seems to tense up slightly, the shadows around them growing darker and multiple tendrils seem to leak out of the ruined wall behind them twitching slightly before she flicks her hand seeming to keep them at bay. She clears her throat slightly, feeling a little more relaxed after the area grew darker along with the Tendrils "Well...um...Im Kat....Whats your real name?" She says staring very intently at him for how she sat in front of him. As she waited, the tendrils behind her slowly creep along the ground surrounding her very very slowly as she watches him with a tilt of her head looking surprisingly innocent for someone who controls shadows and darkness.
Shiro walked towards one of the city gates. He noticed 4 heavily armed guards standing near the entrance to Hightown. Shiro wasn't discouraged. He had been through so much trying to get to Hightown, and he wasn't going to stop now. One of the guards noticed him approaching. He started talking with the other guards. Shiro couldn't hear what they were saying, but, based on their facial expressions, he didn't think it was good. Once Shiro was only a couple yards away from the gate, a guard spoke to him.
"Halt," he said, "and state your business, gifted."
Shiro wondered what a gifted was as he replied. "I heard this place was safe," he answered, "so I wanted to come check out Hightown. Maybe settle down here."
The guard nodded and Shiro approached the gate. Another guard pointed at Shiro's bag that he had slung over his shoulder. "We'll need to check your bag," he said, before pointing at Shiro's waist, "and know why you have guns."
Shiro set his bag down on the table and watched as a guard went through it. He handed his guns to another guard. "I have those for protection against the infected." He stated calmly. The guard examined the guns for a second before handing them back. Shiro was given his bag and told to enter the city. As he did so, he froze.
"Wow...." He gasped.
The city was massive. Shiro couldn't see the walls on the other side. The tall buildings went on as far as the eye could see. However, his awestruck wonder was interrupted by a rock hitting his head. Shiro looked to his left and noticed a group of boys laughing at him. They were probably the ones that threw the rock. Shiro looked to his left and saw two women whispering to each other and glaring at him. Wherever Shiro looked, all he could see were people who were simply disgusted with him. Shiro sighed and walked forward. He wished he had a house in this city that he could hide in. As he was walking, he noticed a flyer pinned up on the side of a building. Shiro walked over to the building and examined the flyer. It was about some group called "The Family" that wanted gifted volunteers. By now, Shiro was starting to pick up on what a "gifted" was. He knew he was one of them. The flyer promised safety and a long-lasting job. It sounded good enough to Shiro. He took one of the tabs attached to the flyer. It listed an address and a time. Shiro glanced at his wristwatch. Sadly, it was already past the listed time. However, Shiro would not give up the easily. If he hurried, he might still make it. He stretched his wings for a moment before lifting himself off the ground. He then flew as fast as he could to the meeting point, hoping he would make it on time. In a minute or two, he saw a man dressed in all black. Hopefully this was the man the flyer mentioned. Shiro stopped flying and started running. It didn't matter that he was talking with some girl.
"Hey," he called out, "are you the man in black!?"

(Last post for a bit, going out)
Kat would wait for the next couple of answers but as she boredly sat in front of the ruined building she quietly allowed her tendrils to slither around in the dark. Soon how ever she would hear a flapping noise and would see a man coming down from the sky and blinks tilting her head in curiosity but when he start running towards them she tensed up watching him. Her tendrils would quickly react to her body language, quickly slithering up into the air like snakes, staring at the man who ran towards them while if the two men payed attention the shadows behind her seemed to grow much much darker once again pitch black. The tendrils would slowly sway seeming to watch the man with the bird like wings even going close and past the man in black.
Giovanni looked down at the young woman who had introduced herself as Kat. Usually people just accepted his alias as his name but she asked him for his real name. Giovanni hesitated for a moment and straightened his spine. He could probably get off with a lie if he made it seem sincere. "You're a clever one, Kat. I don't usually tell people this, hell, most of the people in the Family don't even know my name. But, you seem trustworthy enough. My 'real name' is Shane. But you can't tell anybody that." He leaned in close to Kat, "Do you swear to me?"
Suddenly, a man with bird wings landed nearby. Giovanni had seen some crazy things in his time, but he had never seen a physical mutation come out of becoming infected with the virus, especially one that requires so many cells to be specialized and even special muscles. Giovanni admired the wings through his aviator glasses as the winged man began to run towards him. The man quickly announced his intentions by asking if Giovanni was the aforementioned "Man in Black". Giovanni waved to the man and smiled slightly. "Well, in all my years doing this job, I have never seen somebody with your... abilities." He began, "Yes, I am the man in black mentioned on the flyer. Are you here for the job?" Giovanni glanced quickly towards Kat. Her shadowy tendrils were now pointing menacingly towards the new man. The area behind her also had become totally opaque. Giovanni leaned in close to the young woman, "Kat, I'm going to need you to refrain from harming our guest, there is plenty of room for Gifted of all types."

She weakly sighed, nodding very slowly to 'Shane' in agreement looking faintly annoyed at the appearance of mister bird man who continued moving towards them. Slowly but sure everything went back to normal, the Tendrils very slowly melting into the ground, which seemed to make the ground's shadow look like it melted and blurred, Kat very slowly calmed down staring at the Bird man in faint annoyance but waited where she was, the area around her gaining a little more color as she became less tense. "For a black man you're not all that menacing as I thought you would be, Shane" She says slowly turning her attention to Giovanni with a faint tilt of her had blinking slightly as she fixes her long hair.
Kat sighed softly, slowly looking around the city before she saw what appeared to be paper flying around in the air and on the streets, slowly she walked over and plucked the flier up from the ground.
My current avatar is Gyro Zeppeli from the popular manga Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. He's my favorite character. I love his optimism, dry humor, and his ability to do considerable damage even without a stand.
