The Kingdom of Arden, plunged into the bloodiest war ever seen by man. A war that pitted brother against brother, all in the name of greed. Both sides searched for the world’s greatest treasure, a hoard of unimaginable wealth. The owner of this treasure would rule the known world. Two brothers were nephews to the great King Conrad of the Kingdom of Arden. These brothers distinguished themselves as the kingdom’s greatest knights. They were immortal in reputation and known across the land for their many brave acts of heroism for King and country. All was well until the search for riches fell upon them.
It was a perfect summer day, the sun was at its largest and its hot rays beat down on a world in strife. Despite this beautiful day, the Kingdom was restless and apprehensive and it showed in the faces of the Ardinean people. Sir Montague and Sir Nightingale walked along the great walls of the keep, relishing the warmth of the sun on their faces. “Ahem.” The voice broke their trance. “The King requests your presences m’lords, if you would follow me.” Nightingale glanced at Montague and shrugged, “It had to end sometime, you can’t imagine uncle would keep us here with a war going on.” Montague looked crestfallen, his smile gone. “I suppose.” he said.
They descended the long, winding staircases and strode through the polished stone hallways. Nightingale banged on the door, “Come in!” boomed King Conrad’s deep voice. Montague pushed open the heavy gold inlaid door and strode into the vast high-ceilinged room. He and Nightingale removed their hats with a flourish and bowed before their liege. “That will be all Thomas,” the King said to the young yet portly man that had shown the knights to the King’s chambers. “Yes, m’lord,” Thomas said dolefully, evidently disappointed at the King’s dismissal. He bowed his way out the door and closed it with an unnecessary bang. When it was closed, the King held his massive arms wide, “Come and greet me like your uncle and not your King!” They embraced. William Conrad II was a large, jolly man and a ruler loved by his people. His father, William Conrad I, was thought to be the greatest King to ever rule the Kingdom of Arden and his son had followed in his large footsteps.
When they separated, the King had a look of utter joy on his face, “We’ve located the treasure,” he announced excitedly. He produced a gold box studded with priceless jewels and withdrew an ornate scroll. He unraveled it and began to read:
A tale that’s been passed to Kings from sages,
A treasure that’s been sought for ages.
Greed owns this hoard, many brothers it’s split,
Now finally, we have discovered it.
The world had hidden it away for good,
You should destroy it, if only you could.
We buried it so deep inside that cave,
Enter only those who are true and brave.
Take heed this warning, it brings out the worst,
You may desire that you'll find it first.
“That’s interesting, uncle, but what cave does it speak of?” inquired Nightingale. “Your great uncle, my father, once told me of a tunnel system under the city, I have no doubt that that is where you will find the treasure,” said the King. “We?” said Nightingale, “Us?” gesturing to Montague and himself. “Why yes, of course, why do you think I summoned you?” replied the King. “You don’t think we could be more useful elsewhere and not wandering around under the castle?” asked Montague. “Of course we’ll go uncle,” interrupted Nightingale “Tonight.”
As the sun slowly descended behind the distant mountains to the West, Nightingale and Montague pried open a rusty door by the Eastern wall of the castle. “Here,” said Nightingale, he handed Montague a lit torch. “Thank you,” he said, “We'll need it, it’s quite dark down there.” A set of chipped old stone stairs led down into the ominous darkness, lit only by the rising moon. Nightingale shivered, “Onward and downward.”
After hours of meandering through tunnel after tunnel, they finally stopped. “This is idiotic!” exclaimed Montague, and with that he hurled his torch into the shadows. Yet it didn’t hit any stone wall or skid to a stop on the cave floor as he had expected, instead it fell, and fell, and fell, until its glow disappeared. Not ten feet in front of them was a bottomless chasm, one so deep that there was no sight of the torch. Nightingale stepped back, his head swimming. Montague on the other hand was exited, “Look ahead!” he gestured in front of them.
There was a bridge, so thin and frail that you could never drive a cart across it. “Come on!” cried Montague, he rushed to the bridge with Nightingale in tow. He quickly began to cross the bridge. He turned and shouted, “I need the light to find my treasure! I think I see it up ahead!” He did, of course, see the gleam of the treasure. “Your trea-” Nightingale’s voice faltered. Up from the abyss came a cloud of bats. They swarmed around him and he blindly swung at them with his torch. He stepped back onto nothing and as he fell, he seized the edge. “Montague, help me up!” he cried. Yet his brother stood still, looked into his fear-filled eyes and turned to look at the glow on the cave wall. The treasure was just around the corner, almost within reach. He hastened forward, into the darkness and when he was not but five feet from that opposite side, part of the bridge gave way. He had stepped too close to the edge. So as he fell, and fell and fell, his scream joined Nightingale’s and they found that there was truly a bottom to the abyss.
