Scene 1
In Scene 1, we immediately start seeing Oedipus' arrogance when he refers to the city as "children" This means that Oedipus thinks of himself as so high above the city, he thinks of them as "children". He further shows this when he says, "From others, by the mouth of messengers, I myself come hither Oedipus, known far and wide by my name," This means that Oedipus believes that everyone knows him (he is famous). Oedipus has come because he is worried about a great plague that has come upon the city. To explain what this plague involves, the priest says, "Out of the abysses of a surge of blood; Stricken in the budding harvest of her soil..." What that means is that blood is coming out of the ground! Further into the explanation, the priest says, "Stricken in her pastured herds, and barren travail of women..." There he is saying that women can no longer give birth! He also says, "...The blackness of the graves made opulent..." What he is saying is that so many people are dying, that the graves are getting full. These things are so bad, that the priest blames "He, the God with spear of fire," saying that he "Leaps on the city, a cruel pestilence, and harries it." Creon (the queen's brother, apparently able to communicate with the gods) thinks that all of these things are happening because the king (Laius) has been killed. He shows this by saying, "What the god told me, that I will declare. Phoebus our Lord gives us express command to drive pollution, bred within this land, out of the country... My liege, we had a leader, once, over this land, Called Laius-ere you held the helm of state." Oedipus wants to save the city by finding who murdered Laius. "I shall dispel the plague-spot; for the man..." He says.
Scene 2
In this scene, Oedipus starts to address the mystery. He tries to get someone to tell him who the criminal is by saying, "Whichever of you knows the man... I bid that man shew the whole truth to me; For he shall suffer no disparagement..." In other words, if you know who killed Laius, tell me. You will not get in trouble. He then starts talking to Tiresias, a visually blind wise man. Tiresias refuses to tell Oedipus what he knows about the murder. "Are all unknowing; my say, in any sort, I will not say, lest I display this sorrow." This means that Oedipus will be very sad if he learns the truth. Eventually, Tiresias gives in and reveals what he knows. He says, "Your bane is in no-ways Creon, but your own self," This means that Tiresias has blamed Oedipus for killing Laius!!! But that is not the only thing Creon has accused Oedipus of. He also said this about Oedipus, "To his own sons he shall be found related as a brother..." Creon has accused Oedipus of having intercourse with his mother!!!!! Why does Oedipus not realize this? Because, according to Tiresias, "(to Oedipus) You are ignorant..."
Scene 3
In this scene, Oedipus talks to Creon about what Tiresias has just said about him. Oedipus accuses Creon of being a criminal by saying, "...Do not tell me-that you are not a villain!" He says that Tiresias would not have accused him of killing Laius if Tiresias had not conspired with Creon. He indicated this through these words, "Why, that unless he had conspired with you, he never would have said that Laius' murder was of my doing!" Also in this scene, Jocasta has her first lines. "...what was it made you raise this senseless broil of words?" She says. Once explained to, Jocasta seems to believe that Oedipus did not do anything, but she urges him to forget about it. "Now set you free from thought of that you talk of..." She says. Oedipus seems to think that is a ridiculous idea through the words, "What perturbation and perplexity take hold upon me, woman, hearing you!" Oedipus reveals that he is afraid that Tiresias was right. He starts to explain that a strange man told him that "...I (Oedipus) should wed my mother... And be my natural father's murderer." Oedipus then explained that he "...set out to go to Pytho..." In order to escape this prophecy. He explains further that "As I journeyed on, I found myself upon the self-same spot where, you say, this king perished..." There, he "met a herald, and a man that rode in a colt-carriage... And the old man himself, would thrust me," So he met an old man that told him to get out of the way. Oedipus then "slayed them all!" He figured that "If there be a semblance to connect this nameless man with Laius... Who on earth could have been born with more of hate from heaven?" So, Oedipus thinks that he mi9ght actually have killed Laius!
Scene 4
In this scene, a messenger is introduced who delivers the news that Oedipus' dad has died of old age. Oedipus responds with a "Heigh Ho!" Because if his dad has died of old age, then Oedipus couldn't have killed his father! But the messenger is not done yet. Later, he says "...Polybus was not akin to you!" This means that Polybus was not his real father! The messenger explains, "He had you as a gift from me... I found you in Cithaeron's wooden dells (the woods). Your ankle joints may witness," This means that Oedipus was found in the woods with his ankles tied up! At this time, Jocasta becomes very nervous.; This is shown by saying, "Why who 'twas he spoke of? Nay. Never mind-never remember it- 'Twas idly spoken!'" She is afraid that the boy she had tied up before was Oedipus!
Scene 5
To begin this scene, Jocasta as left. She seemed to be in great grief. So much grief, that she killed herself! A second messenger came to break the news later. "The illustrious of Jocasta is no more... Self-slain." He starts to tell the story of how she died. "She went straight onward to the bed chamber..." He said, "For Oedipus break in, crying aloud... There beheld his wife hanging... What followed; snatching from her dress gold pins Wherewith she was adorned, he lifted them, and smote the nerves of his own eyeballs..." So, Jocasta hanged herself, and Oedipus poked his own eyes out! Oedipus comes back with his blind eyes, and he says, "But never more by this my native town burdened with me for living inmate; rather suffer me to haunt to haunt the mountains- where my mountain is Cithaeron, which my mother and my sire, living, appointed my sepulcher, that as they meant, my slayers, I may expire..." And so, Oedipus was banished to the mountain he was found in.
