I really liked it. Not as much as Discord, but it was a fun adventure and I love that they're actually dropping hints about things to come in future episodes. What was that book Luna had at the end?
My only real complaint was Sombra not being a character. They should have either given him more to do, or made him a force of nature. similar to the Windigoes. Other than that, a solid start to what should be a good season.
Now a tiny bit of speculation: Since there were no crystal unicorns or pegasi, Sombra wasn't a Crystal Pony, but he was a powerful unicorn. Ancestor of the Sparkles? Anything to do with Starswirl the Bearded? Just some thoughts.
Shoot...everyone's watched it already?
I was planning on watching it today, but its really awkward to see your brother sitting on your couch just waiting for me to turn on the TV. Not to mention there might be dreadful results.
So I'm going to watch it late night.
FREAKING EPIC. I HAVE NO WORDS FOR HOW AWESOME THAT WAS. MY FAVORITE PART WAS WHEN CELESTIA FAILED TWILIGHT EXCEPT SHE DIDN'T AND IT WAS AN EVIL DARK MAGIC TRICK. MY OTHER FAVORITE PART WAS WHEN SPIKE ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING. S3 IS GON B GUD.
One thing I noticed is that some of the humor was forced... Pinkie Pie and the night vision goggles? Really?
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
THAT WAS HILARIOUS
I ESPECIALLY LOVED THE PART WHEN FLUTTERSHY CAME TO REPORT TO TWILIGHT AND THEN IT WAS REALLY PINKIE
THEN FLUTTERSHY ACTUALLY SHOWED UP AND SHE WAS LIKE "THE F**K"

So I'm going to watch it late night.
Same here, I watch episodes either very early, or very late. I don't get any real TV channels and if my dad walked by while I was watching an episode online, that would be awkward to explain.
It's awkward to explain as long as you don't do it, and if he goes all ape-sh*t about it then he's not that good of a father.
My father, mother, and all the persons I know don't give two bits of me liking the show, as long as I'm not all idiotic and spread it around all the time. I understand it's different for many people, but explaining it to your family should be easy, because if it's not, then you might have slight social problems in your family. MIGHT I said MIGHT, if someone is going to complain because I said that then go on, I don't care.
Does anyone here have any issues with explaining their bronydom to their family or other people? I know I don't since it seems that most of my friends are actual friends and don't mind it, even that one hater who doesn't really care.
My family and friends are...
My parents are extremely sarcastic, and don't mind tossing around stuff to tease me. If I can get through one day without five facetious insults hurled at me, I'm lucky. I love em and all, but it's annoying after a time.
My friends, all but one, enjoy teasing each other (me included) to death as well. Like my parents, I wouldn't mind if they didn't do this all the darn time. They are good friends, but it gets annoying after a while. So i don't bother telling anyone in the end.

I wish I had your parents, I love sarcasm, and sometimes it just flies right over my parents. Anyways, moar spoilerz
I didn't think she was a Mary Sue because she is a student, and we know she can easily pick up new spells, like teleporting, but this is presumably a while after that and may have become more adept at such things, which is why she was able to pick up the evil spell and the gravity one on her first try. She may have also developed a mind bond with Celestia because she said the evil spell was something Princess Celestia taught her. Lastly, I thought the main plot twist would be when she cast the evil spell to see the staircase, I thought it would spread and then infect the heart stone on top so they would have to do something to get rid of it with some thing or another.

My question is: How did he live for a thousand years? He seemed to be outside of the kingdom himself, and since he's just a unicorn it seems like he would've been dead by now.

FINALLY! A Scootasode!
Yay!
My review:
It seems like everyone here either hates this episodes guts, thinks it's the most "meh" episode possible, or thought it was actually really good. I'm gonna go with the "meh" option.
First off, Sombra. That was terrible. He just never showed up. Nothing was explained. "HEY! YOU! I'M THE BAD GUY AND YOU ARE MY SLAVES FOR A REASON THAT I WILL NEVER TELL YOU ABOUT!".
Twilight's gravity spell didn't bother me. She's been studying magic for years. She's levitated a bear the size of a three story building and feed it with a water tower. What did bother me was the fact that she knew how to use all this dark magic all the sudden. Speaking of dark, this was a very dark episode IMO. The king pretty much died in the end, had his horn chopped off, and has been trapped in the artic cold for 1000 years. And this.
The humor was decent enough, I guess, but it just didn't feel like it pulled it off. Sure, I chuckled at a few moments, but those were few and far between. The pacing wasn't good, and it felt like some of the parts were quickly rushed (The Sombra scenes.).
Almost no character development for Shining and Cadence, which I would've liked if it was there. The crystal ponies were nice. I think I'll quite like seeing more of them. The failure song was good, the second one felt out of place. It wasn't needed. The third 'redone' version of the first song was probably my favorite, with the mane 6 all singing. The animation has been very much improved. The camera angles, the sound (The running down the stairs part with RD for example), the character movement, it's all been added on to.
Finally, the foreshadowing. My God, the foreshadowing. Angry Luna, Luna with the book at the end,
"And when you do, I know you will be able to move onto the next level of your studies." -Celestia (4:55)
It seriously sounds like they're preparing to turn her into an immortal.
Yeah, I'm late, and yeah it's a big review (especially for me.)
I forgot to mention my rating. 5/10.

Yeah, I'm late, and yeah it's a big review (especially for me.)
It's not really that I hated it, but I didn't find it very great, either. I mean, it was decent, but several things, such as Twilight Sparkle all of the sudden being able to reverse gravity, or Sombra being defeated so easily, I simply found flawed. It was an okay episode, but I wouldn't revere it as one of the best of all two-parters, and Sombra certainly wasn't as good as Chrysalis or Discord as a villain
It's awkward to explain as long as you don't do it, and if he goes all ape-sh*t about it then he's not that good of a father.

It's still hard to build up the courage to tell them :/ I'll tell them eventually.

Yes, my parents are just like that, especially my mom. When they find out, I won't hear the end of it for at least 3 years...

Hasbro will get sued for this, putting wife misuse as something to save other people.
Also, I guess I'll put this here too:
I hate how they manipulated G3 like that, I personally like G3 "not second half" and G1, more so G1. They should never mix with anything from G4. They are not of alike.
I watched it on the hub at ten today.
Those glak toy commericals are stuck in my head
I loved every one of the premiers, but this one was probably my least favorite. There was hardly anything wrong with it, but I just really loved the first and second. One thing I noticed is that some of the humor was forced... Pinkie Pie and the night vision goggles? Really?
Ah, I know how ya feel. S3 opening, does not seem good as it should and COULD have been. Feels very very rushed and not thought out very well. As you said, it had to much "forced" emotions, not natural.
But personally, I await Magic Duel. It shall prove upmost interesting, in terms fan serviced.
Bold=not a joke
Wife-throwing is to be an olympic sport.
Rocks turn green when they die. Twilight is going to be an alicorn (Oh please all that is holy, no.) Anti-hype works Hype sucks The Premieres were bad in every way predicted, but good in the ways NOT predicted.
Britannica is best pony.
Spike looks badass crystalized.
These crystal ponies' characters are so thin you can practically SEE THROUGH them. (Ohhoho the joke is horrible.)
Pinkie Pie is best Fluttershy. The ending of this season is gonna suck BAD.
That there is a completely good reason, but atleast that proves that they're not that big of an idiots. Parents teasing is over by just saying "shut up" harshly, atleast that could work if your parents are atleast close to my father. Friends you can't make stop, but you can ignore or go with it and respond like I usually do sometimes. As an example, I'm eating pine cones. So what I do is that I sometimes ignore and sometimes respond with jokey tone but harshly "Next time when someone says that I'll stuck a F*cking pine cone-cow up their @ss." and that usually cracks 'em up so I'm out of it, what to say when it comes to being brony is harder so I just ignore
I respect them, and don't want to say shut up. But they know it annoys me, and we just have a silent war with me doing things to slightly aggravate them in return. Both know what's going on, both know neither will stop until they do, so it's perpetual.
Friends... Can't do much. I'd rather just be quiet.
But just gotta say that sarcastic parents are a lot better than those who ignore the whole thing, trust me. It's not fun when someone's just like "I don't give a sh*t". The sarcasm actually proves that they care of you, even as annoying as it is. They also wont ruin everything if you wanna watch an episode or two... I hope.
They wouldn't, and sure being sarcastic is better than ignorant (or supportive. Good grief I can't stand the type who just lays on the "go get em"s. But that's just me.) I can't ask for better parents for me, but I don't think they are 100% perfect.

God dammit. I had hype for this episode, and I feel real moody now. Not really all bad, it was mostly meh though.
Pinkie was still hilarious as usual, Fluttershy still pretty great. They both kept me quite entertained.
Sombra was just a terrible villain, no backstory, no motive, just "blagh I'm an evil original character, do not steal!"
The animation though was really good, it felt movie worthy even, It looked really stunning.
The songs were cool, not really that memorable but still neat.
this was my favorite part. I was singing the super man theme to it, I demand there be a video of Super Cadence.
All in all, kinda ty compared to the other episodes and especially with all the hype added to it. But on it's own, it was an ok start. I just hope the other twelve are better.
Also, why the is everyone talking about Gak?!
During the livestream, there were constant back-to-back commercials involving Gak (go look it up, I really have no idea what it is x.x) in like... every break, so yeah...
