I like some metal - usually the bands that try a bit of melody in their vocals, and are a bit unique. Opeth springs to mind.
There's a lot of metal bands I can't stand, that my brother loves. He can't see why I love Neil Young. He can't stand his voice.
The point is, we all have different reasons for why we like a band or song. Different strokes for different folks.
IMO, I feel that Metal has gotten a bad rap because there's quite a few sub-generas inside of it that are just plain trash. I personally don't like it, because I've played Piano and Guitar for 11 years and the complexity I play is much better than some metal I've heard. I like more classic and contemporary music, metal is just too harsh and raw for me. That's actually probably why most people aren't fond of it; the sound is too raw and dirty.

Even though I love a raw sound, a LOT of metal isn't.Check the song I posted above for a great example of a polished metal song that I can see pop lovers liking.Classical music is very complex, a lot of it more complex than metal, but ever heard of neo-classical metal? it's basically classical music with guitars and vocals, something you should enjoy.Contemporary music is anything that is current, including metal.

Well, everyone is unique, including their brains. Some brains are "aroused" in a certain way by heavy metal but not classical and vice versa. There are also other variables like social activity, past experiences, "issues", ect.
Although I'm posting this a long time after the discussion is over, here is my point:
I am a metal drummer. I play similar music to that of Parkway Drive. If you get past the whole misconception that all metal is satanic, and actually drop your grudge, you will realize how technical it is. Compare hip hip to metal;
Hip hip (I don't listen to it and don't like it so there will be obvious bias):
- Most songs are completely computer generated
- A 5 year old could create the backbeat, rhythm and lead parts
- Still filled with a unique flavor, and have has a huge emotional impact on people
Metal:
- The screaming can become unceccesaey and in audible
- Some bands use satanic, " the world, murder murder" lyrics
- MOST band have more meaning lyrical wise than any song you've probably heard
- Songs about politics, corruption, anti-war, world peace, girl issues, guy issues, environment, god, etc
- contains a unique technicality that is unconpared
You also say there is no musicality. Obviously, like most of the rest of the world, yo are musically retarded. Musical elements in hip hop: a beat, lyrics, rhythm, lead, time signature, dynamics, song structure + heap more
Musical elements in metal: a beat, lyrics, rhythm, lead, time signature, dynamics, song structure + heap more
See the connection?
All music is music. Even nicki Minaj, as much as I hate to say it, is music.
In the end, it all comes down to preference. I ask the same to you; how on earth do you like hip hop?
Ps. Sorry about the terrible spelling, in writing this on my phone.
I suppose the music somehow relates to them. I listen, and enjoy listening to music that makes me think. Besides, everyone likes different things, even if the interest is completely absurd. When I was young, I was completely obsessed with books (still am :P) all the other children thought it was strange, they disliked reading and literature.
I've only recently gotten into Heavy Metal music, or Metal as it is known, so I know what it looks like from the outside. When you picture Heavy Metal, you think of people wearing black and white paint, spiky black clothes, they hate religion and they love screaming into microphones and making as much noise as possible. However, as I found out, most, if not all of that, is simply not true.
Since Heavy Metal is an 'extreme' form of music, not much is known about it because it isn't played on the radio, and their is a social stigma attached to it, so there are a lot of misconceptions about it. For example, if you see people wearing those kind of clothes they probably listen to Gothic music (which isn't really metal) or Black Metal, which is one of the most extreme sub-genres. Most 'metalheads' wear normal clothing, or just a band shirt. Also, the whole anti-religion thing is almost completely made up. Many metal bands are Christian, or belong to any other religion, and the only bands that are openly anti-Christian are a few Black Metal bands.
I'll admit, when I first started listening to metal music, I hated the screaming. I loved the music, but the screaming seemed to get in the way. The Doom metal gutturals were incomprehensible, the Death metal growls were loud and scary and the Black Metal shrieks... don't even go there. However, once I listened to a few songs, I began to realise that the only reason I didn't like the sound was because I had never heard it before. Sure, it took some time, but the vocal style began to grow on me, and now I enjoy it as much, if not more than regular singing. Not all metal bands scream though, quite a few stick to 'clean' vocals, or just incorporate a growl every now and then. About the noise thing, yes metal music is known for being a wall of sound. However, if you actually listen to the music, and begin to understand and absorb all of the melodies and harmonies, you suddenly realise that you are listening to the sweetest music you've ever heard. Metal explores music in ways no one else does, constantly coming up with new instrument combinations, song structure, pitch, all of the components that goes into making a piece of music memorable. It takes some getting used to, after listening to more simplistic and repetitive beats and rhythms in more mainstream music, but once you train your ear to pick out all the notes you get a much greater appreciation for music.
So, enough with the anti-stereotyping, here are the reasons why I love metal music.
1. It sounds good.
Seems simple enough, but really if the music didn't good, then I wouldn't listen to it. I've already gone a bit into detail about it, but I'll add some stuff, In metal, all of the instruments play a part. Rather than the singer being the focus, the instruments all work together to create an even greater song. The vocals, guitars, bass, drums and whatever other instruments are thrown in all blend together to create a sound which is almost unearthly. The range of sounds is also amazing, with too many sub-genres to count, all different but with similarities.
2. The emotional effect.
When you listen to techno music, you want to get up and start dancing. When you listen to Blues music, you get sad, but you also feel hope. When you listen to classical music, your mind wanders and you ponder things which you never thought about before. Metal does all of this and more. From brutal Death Metal and Metalcore which gives you an energy rush and makes you want to get up and headbang as fast as possible, to Symphonic and Melodic Death Metal dripping in melancholy, to mind-opening Progressive Metal, the ability of Metal to inspire emotion and thought is unmatched. There are really no words to describe the feelings you get when listening to Metal music.
3. The skill.
What may seem like a wall of sound to someone who hasn't heard it before may actually be an extremely complicated piece of music which requires years of training and copious amounts of talent. I'm not saying that other forms of music don't take skill, but Metal requires the most amount of skill and dedication out of any genre, in my opinion. Not only this, but Metal bands are 'real'. They rarely alter their music through computers (and if they do it is usually only minor), they don't have rich families or massive sponsors behind their backs, they make their music because they love it, and they usually live off of it. I've never heard of a metal band that doesn't write all of their own songs, which brings me to another point. The lyrics in Metal are simply breathtaking. Compared to some of the garbage found in modern Pop music, Metal's lyrics are eye-opening, controversial, challenging, yet so emotional and fragile to the point that you just want to sit there and weep.
Overall, I like Metal because it is the music which I connect with the strongest. Once I started listening to Metal, there was no going back. What I had thought was amazing before became worse by comparison, and nothing seemed to bring me that same joy as Metal did. If you've made it this far, congratulation on making it through my ramblings, and I'll leave you with a quote from Sam Dunn.
Ever since I was 12 years old I had to defend my love for heavy metal against those who say it's a less valid form of music. My answer now is that you either feel it or you don't. If metal doesn't give that overwhelming surge of power that make the hair stand up at the back of your neck, you might never get it, and you know what? That's okay, because judging by the 40,000 metalheads around me we're doing just fine without you.

even though i am only putting in this bit i completly agree with you i hated metal until i hit about 9th grade and i got into it a bit more and more to the point where most of my music libaray is metal

The reason I like metal and alternative is not because of the lyrics, it's because of the intensity of the actual song which differs it from other genres.

I once heard someone say you could fight off the Ender Dragon with sticks. He was the smartest person I have ever met.
I enjoy strings, guitars and violins especially. Fast-paced strings can inspire confidence and courage in someone, so I often listen to it while exercising or performing a difficult task. I especially enjoy Folk and Power Metal for this reason. Lots of strings, played loud and fast, and yet with a strong and beautiful melody not present in some of the darker subgenres.

“Patience up to a point. Know your time, but work your wyrd always.”
people like me listen to metal because it has more meaning and emotion than some upbeat pop song singing about sex and drugs.
like my plauge by slipknot is about judging someone before knowing someone
duality is about standing at the crossroads of your life and not knowing were to go
bodies, numb, one step closer they all have a deep meaning

I've felt the hate rise up in me...
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves...
I wander out where you can't see...
Inside my shell I wait and bleed...
We like metal because its an intense music. where poeple can go crazy and just unleash themselve, their anger
and just go crazy. We like metal because of the message the songs transmit to us. Meal is an intense, loud music.
But not all metal bands play crazy music there are heavy metal bands but alsow black metal bands or death metal bands. Most poeple don't know this but they are the ones that just scream like crazy the hole length of the song, not all metal bands are like that: Black Veil Brides BVBarmy// Metallica// KISS....
Go chek thoses guys out their really cool, not all their songs are crazy and loud, search up: Lost it all from the Black Veil Brides you'll see chek out the band itself some of they'r songs are crazy haha the ones i like most but you might not. And before anyone starts saying: These guys are bad, they failed their life. they do drugs. smoke, drink! Well possibly they drink and smoke many bands and singer do but how do you know they are on drugs?? who told you that?? no one you just expect them to because they play that kind of music well, yes some metal bands are on drugs or a few members but not all so don't judge them just my looking at the music they play. Metal is a music loved by alot of poeple, maybe not you, but alot of poeple like it. Mostly poeple in their 20 to their 30 but teenagers like me of 13 years old or older like it to.
Personally my favorite band is the Black Veil Brides Go look up some other bands and you will see you might get more interested in that, you never know
