WHY do you listen to music?
A lot of people seem to base the quality of music off of it's "meaningfulness". I used to view it that way. I used to listen to things like Rise Against... then I realized that it's just a bunch of guys complaining about the system. I used to listen to Tupac and such, he always had those deep messages in his song. I still listen to his music occasionally, but I don't look at it the same way anymore.
That's not to say that music is bad, because some people might like music for the sad parts or the emotional meanings of them. Just, for me personally, at least lately, "meaning" is really pointless to me. Now, I do have taste. I don't listen to **** like Nikki Manaj (or however you spell it). I listen to things that have lyrics, but aren't necessarily sad or trying to get a point across. They just have a good sound, good feel to it, good chorus, whatever it may be, it's come down to pretty much a strictly for enjoyment/entertainment level, rather than emotional connection.
For example, I listen to bands like AC/DC and Dropkick Murphys. Now, that's not to say that their songs might have some meanings to them. But let's face it, when you think AC/DC, you don't think "Deep emotional message." rather, you think "Band that just rocks out and has feel-good music."
So why do you listen to music?
P.S.- This wasn't meant to be a thread to advertise what a like/dislike; I just had to use some examples with what I was saying. If you need to, feel free, but don't just list off a bunch of bands you like.
I usually listen to music without any lyrics. Because I like music, but the majority of the time lyrics distract me from the music itself.
This results in me listening mostly to video game tracks and the occasional instrumental of a lyric'd song.
I usually listen to music when it's quiet because I like having sound in the background. Unless I'm sleeping or doing school work or whatnot, but otherwise I like background sound/music. I also will listen to music to drown out the noise of my younger siblings.

Music is as much a part of the human soul as breathing,
At its best it makes you feel as though nothing in the world could be more bueatiful, (the most moving songs for me are playedon the violin,) such as ashokum fairwell, some of motzarts pieces, and requiem for a dream
At its worst it makes you feel angry, and causes one to act violently. Such as heavy metal, (who really likes that garbage)
Music moves the soul. It can change your very emotional state. To state the music doesn't effect you is like saying you could go without breathing. There is no nuetral music, there is good and bad, just as there is good air (think mountain lakeside at 65 degrees) and bad air (think center of Los Angeles in rush hour traffic, smoking, and air too close to a fire)
It will change you,
I listen to music to brighten my day, to pick me up when i am down, and to remind me that there is true beauty in this world.
I listen to music because it is like a drug which helps you forget. It helps me forget about any past troubles. If i'm in a pissed off mood, i'll listen to some heavy metal. If im in a happy mood, i'll listen to a happy song. Music lets you express yourself. It's like a gateway out of this world.

I listen to music to pump me up for the next fight, and to express myself through dance. I find if music isn't exhilarating enough, I oftentimes don't like it. That doesn't mean I don't like well composed music, I find any song that doesn't have a good rhythm/meaning to be just plain annoying.

I listen to music because I love music. Music isn't just something that's there, music is a significant part of me. Music can take me back in time, music can make me laugh, make me cry, make my terrified. Music can make me feel like a badass, music can make me feel worthless. Music can make me forget about myself, music can make me think of all the little things I do and make me pull them apart and change them.
When a song I love starts playing, I can't not listen to it. Whether it's Portishead or Mayhem or Adele, I can identify with it.
It doesn't have to say something I agree with. Hell, it can be instrumental for all I care. But the music. The music is everything.
Some music is just entertainment to me. Party Rock Anthem, however much I realize it's stupid, is a fun song. It doesn't make me feel as strongly as Portishead's "Glory Box," but God it's a fun song.
Some music I listen to because it reminds me of something, somewhere, sometime, someone. Some music I listen to because it's just god damn silly. Some music I listen to because it gets me very sad, or happy. Some music I listen to because it calms me down.
I apologize for my rambling. I'm really ****ing sleepy and my eyes feel like they're gonna fall off if I keep looking at the computer. Not gonna proofread this. Just posting.
I listen to music for different reasons.I listen to slow songs like "I Remember You" by Skid Row and "High Enough" by The Yankees to get me through tough times.I listen to happy music like "Ride The Wind" by Poison and "Lay Your Hands On Me" by Bon Jovi just to have a good time.I also listen to almost everything by bon jovi if i need some inspiration for guitar stuff and song ideas.
I listen to music in order to shape, form, or otherwise define a mental state I require to have. All other kinds & types of pursuits with music are meaningless to me. However, I never resort to listening to Rap, Country, Drinking Songs, Children's Music, and typical middle-eastern music where my cognitive processes become hindered, corrupted, and/or dropped on a constant basis.
