Ive read some topics on gamefaqs that mention minecraft running better on only 1 core. Is there any evidence for this, and also, is it better to run it on high priority or not?
I run my Minecraft on my 8 core processor, along with 32 gigs of ram.
I don't own a box that most of the Minecraft community owns.
They complain about Minecraft being too -.-
Running anything on high priority will help it, assuming your computer can be helped. From what I've heard minecraft does not use the advantages of multicore computer; however, I have read that there are tweaks to java that one can make to improve multicore performance when hosting a minecraft server (dunno how that translates to singleplayer)
(I don't have any links though, and I am in no way an expert)
tl;dr: high priority might help, multicore probably doesn't help per-say
Priority to high will not help unless your CPU usage is high and programs are fighting for the CPU; better solution is to figure out what is hogging the CPU and stop it.Affinity to 1 will only help with older games that crash with multiple cores; don't use it here it can only slow you down.
I run MC in a VPS on my personal server. Right now it's set to dual-core and 8GB RAM and things run fine, even when the backup script is running and compressing the map files. Since MC is stuck in single core mode at this stage, the only consistent benefit you get from additional cores is making sure other processes don't interfere.

Cool thanks, anyway it seems since beta i can finally run on far distance without lag, and before i could barely play on normal distance, lagwise i mean.

Omg That thing's a monster!
Anyway, I have a dual core processor with 4 gigs of ram and I run Minecraft just fine.

Lol. 8-core, 32GB is the specs for my full server as well. A monster but was hella expensive too.

I commend you for showing your epeen on this forum, even though you are lying. Care to share what motherboard you are using? Besides a liar you are also being confused.
Minecraft doesn't use 8 cores. Minecraft uses one core and only one. Nothing beyond a dual core CPU will improve MC performance on the CPU side. Most folks have issues because they either don't have enough RAM for their OS and MC, or their gfx card is too shitty (i.e. Intel integrated).

He said he is running the game on his eight core. He never said Minecraft was using all of them. And hey, if you had eight cores and 32gb of RAM you'd flash your epeen too. Hell, I only have four cores and four gb of RAM and I like flashing my epeen.
To the guy with a 5770, why didn't you surge an extra $25 and get something with 256 bit memory?

This = OP
I have a generic System Max computer that does the job just fine.
It runs a dual core and 8 gb of Ram, yes I run a server off of it with no lag, whats more is the computers 2 years old and has over 650 programs on it that I dont use, while I was running my server no one complained of any lag.

TL;DR anyone suggesting they have an 8 core CPU on their computer is lieing.
Or 32 gb ram for that matter, thats about 1200 dollars worth of RAM.
A server is a different story, but considering servers run upwards of thousands of dollars, they're either flaunting imaginary e-peen with a server they're renting space from, or they're just being dumb.

Nehalem processors are 8-cores....
I can find 32GB of ddr3 for less than half the price you mentioned.
Now back to the OP.
Mincraft only runs 1 thread. But that dosent matter, because Java is what is running the game.

You get it yet?
The core i3, i5, i7 and such are all Nehalem architecture processors, far as i know they don't sell desktop processors with 8 cores, period, 6 is the highest. They make 8 cores for servers, like i said, which are much different and cost a fortune.
I'd love to hear where you can get 32 gb of ddr3 for less then half the price i mentioned, short of a wholeseller, which isn't at all anything most people here would own.

firstly, if you knew anything about procesors, you would know tht there arent any 8 core processors out there for the average consumer. you would need 2, quad core processors. mobos out there DO exist, that can hold multiple processors, but they're far and few between. most of them are server boards.
secondly, java cant use multiple processors. it can only use one. youer second processor is useless. you're running it on a quad core, like myself.

I just need to a wait a minute or two, but that is just because it takes a while to add stuff to RAM
I think this game is more RAM dependent than anything else.

Having more then two cores is irrelevant.
Clock speed is the most important part of the CPU for this game.
CPU, RAM, and GPU are all pretty equally important to this game.
CPU @ 3.4 GHz, % usage with one core generating a world + 30 seconds of in game:
CPU @ 3.4 GHz, % usage with four cores generating a world +30 seconds of in game:
Using multiple cores, one core does most of the work, and the other three help with simple things and reduce the load on the one.
Using one core, it has to do all of the work and hits 100% usage, and this is clearly less efficient.
I get lag spikes when using a single core, due to it topping out at 100%.
P.S. This is all with the fantastic OpenGL drivers for my HD5770. Which helps, IMO.
