At the title suggests, does Norton Antivirus hog CPU? I heard that it does and removing it is a good idea if you want a fast computer. I know that everyone thinks that Norton Antivirus is a horrible program and doesn't do a good job as something like Avast ( I think that's what it's called)
Anyone want to help me out? I need a better CPU to play newer games.
I dual boot Mac OS X and Windows, and for Windows I use Microsoft Security Essentials which is much less CPU intensive and is free, and works much better. Though, most of the time you don't even need an anti-virus. To be honest, unless you are pirating on some random webpages or downloading... porn.. =/ The chances of you getting a virus are so slim, especially for Mac OS X. A virus just doesn't pass by and infect your computer, you actually have to do something to get it, so I wouldn't even bother with an anti-virus. Just scan once and month and you are good to go, a realtime anti-virus is usually a horrible idea, as it takes up a decent amount of RAM (usually 50-200, depending on what you get, but the 200mb is a little on the extreme side.) It also tends to eat your CPU if you don't have at least a dual core CPU when transferring files, and sometimes disk usage from regular scans.

On Windows, I was running no AV for about 2 weeks, I'm just smart enough to watch what I am doing, and I no what to do in case of a virus. SSD's are much easier to work with when infected I hear.
Avira is the best free antivirus you can get therefor i highly recommend using it instead of norton (im not saying norton is a free one but that avira is by far better than it)
That's debatable, most of the free anti-viruses are trash imo. They throw a ton of false positives.
I use MSE and Ad-Aware. Though MSE doesn't have as high of detection rates as other anti-viruses out on the market, it does a good job at keeping the system safe. Ad-Aware's adwatch made it a more competent anti-virus and has some of the highest detection rates of the free anti-virus applications on the market.
Honestly, as long as you're smart about what you do on the internet, you should be fine. Going to sites that have personal information, make sure you use a clean browsing session and try to use https instead of the usual http browsing methods.

"Best" is very, very relative to one's own preferences.
no look not as of personal opinion its been rated as the best free antivirus software and its in top 5 for the best antivirus software
EDIT: i dont know how the ranking is now but in december 2010 it was on top 5 so it cant be that bad and CPU its currently running on my computer at 11MB of RAM
By what site?
December 2010 was a long time ago, and just because it is "top rated" does not mean it is not a resource hog.
If I recall correctly, McAfee was top rated at one point and that thing has NEVER had good stats.

Gotta agree with that statement, even I should be using a Linux AV in the event that I accidentally do something stupid...and I'm not a completely ignorant everyday user.
I don't know about you guys... But on multiple accounts my computer has almost been hacked by random un-visited sites. Without an anti-virus software, even a simple one, to block that automatically, a virus could do a lot of damage, and i'm not in a position to buy new software OR a computer.
Some things you NEED an anti-virus program, because scanning won't solve everything.

Your router handles "hacking", not your AV. As another guy suggested, MSE for realtime, MBAM for scans. Also, listen to the guy saying that common sense is the best "AV". I went 6 months "unprotected" and had no problems.
The three best free AVs are arguably MSE, Avast and Avira. All of which are excellent and don't use up much resources.
All AV's still take CPU Paging Memory though, that is why it is so hard to run when heavily overclocking, the cache's are unstable, aka why in the Bulldozer OC competition one of the engineers cryed out "8.4 GHz, and we have the Virus Scanner enabled" or something along the lines of that.

Less is still better, though.
And if you want to play games or do other stuff with very heavy overclocking, just turn the AV off.
Not like a game's going to give you a virus; all you need is a router firewall when gaming.

hogcow will NOT let you play better games, for that you will need to get a new CPUhttp://raptr.com/UrbanNinja6?src=em_gamesm" target=""
It's got low detection rates, high false positive counts, and overall is probably the worst AV out there.
Uninstall it, use MSE for realtime and MBAM for scans.
This is false (see: the mac section for info and sources).
