I'm currently rocking a Q6600 @ 2.7 Ghz but looking for more, I would overclock as I have a really nice G0 stepping Q6 but unfortunately I am using an Asus P5N E-SLI which simply doesn't work well with quads at all. It makes little sense buying a new motherboard for a processor that's almost half a decade old (as much as I actually want to) so I've got a few questions to ask on moving forward.
(Pre-notes I have a decent power supply, cooling, etc for anything new, OC'ed, etc)
A.) I have a C2D E6600 laying around that I could probably overclock the crap out of, I know for most games this would be an upgrade but for games like BF3 and Planetside 2 would I be taking a hit due to the lack of cores or would the (potential) higher frequency make up for it?
B.) Plan to buy new Proc/Motherboard/RAM and need advice on the best bang for your buck at around $120
A cpu upgrade could be a complete waste if you have a crap gpu.
Sorry, to clarify the CPU is currently the weak link. I have a 7870 and a XFX 650w pro (80+ bronze?) or something like that something like 45-50 amps on the 12v though can't remember it all off the top of my head.
EDIT:
Also both the PSU/GPU were bought to future proof for newer builds, it's obviously way way overkill for what I currently have.
You're definitely going to need a new motherboard, the most of an upgrade you could get is a Core 2 Extreme which are horribly overpriced. Is $120 your total budget for everything?

Oh lord no, That's just processor and even then I don't expect miracles. Just looking for some help on picking the best Proc within budget (or close to it). Will go from there.

So is $120 just for the CPU, or do you need the whole package within $120?

All help appreciated, thanks for your time.

fm87!ATX (7 PCI/card brackets)
M-ATX
Motherboard http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-m5a97r20
Ram: whatever cheapest 8gb kit.
Best match for your gpu. Not $120, because you can't get a good mobo/ cpu/ ram for $120.
Best for $120, but rebates. ya. $60 in rebates is a lot and not garunteed.

fm87!CPU, though the FX-6300 seemed solid that Haku posted seems solid.
Also anyone got any answered on OC'ing the Dual Core?
It's not really worth it to try and overclock that dinosaur. Go with Haku's suggestion.
