So I just bought myself a shiny new early Christmas present, the 32 GB Black Nexus 5. I just switched over from an iPhone 4S, and I was wondering - what can be transferred over and what can't? I know iTunes music, photos/and videos can, but can contacts be transferred? And books? (Yeah, yeah, I know, apps can't be transferred.)
Also, what good apps should I install onto the Nexus? I couldn't download anything last night because severe weather knocked out our wifi and cable for a while.
From reading the specs about those two phones, No (I don't have one, so I'm basing this on specs from the net)! Since the Nexus 5 uses a Mini SIM card, and iPhone 4s uses a Micro SIM card, you need to get a new SIM card from your Nexus phone (since Micro SIM is larger than Mini SIM).
You need to contact your operator to get them to send you a new SIM card that works for your phone.
So you'll need to manually add all the contacts. On the upside though, get a Google account, then through the web, you can add all your contacts there. Then just log in with your Google account on the Nexus phone and sync all your contacts.
I got my Nexus 5 through the Sprimt store in my town, so it has a SIM card already. Not knowing they do file transfers and all that stuff, I erased my iPhone completely. I backed it up through iTunes before I did so, though.
Is there a way to take the contact files from my Mac's address book and put them on the Nexus?
Contacts can probably be transferred by syncing your Mac address book with a Google account (see here). Provided you have your Google account set to sync contacts on your Nexus, it should sync and update between the two. As for books, they're tied to iBooks if you bought them using the app (or the iTunes store). Play Books and other eBook apps on Android do not support the DRM used with iBooks.
For apps... Nova Launcher would be a great start for customising. UCCW or Chronus are great clock widgets, check em out if you don't like the default clock widget. For normal apps, ASTRO File Manager, OI File Manager, Pandora Radio/Last.fm, Skifta, SwiftKey, Usemon, Firefox (it's a fair deal better than the built in browser), Play Music, Play Books, Dashlane, Google Keep, Cerberus, Tasker, Poweramp.... the list goes on.
Those should give you a decent start. Best thing to do is to browse through the store or app reviews online and find what suits you.

Thanks, I used the Address Book trick. Shame about the books though.
It'd be easy to sync the music with Google Play Music Manager, but even though it says the card won't be charged if I download the free version, I'm reluctant to put in my card number. (I've had an iffy relationship with Google when it comes to money.)
Don't forget to get a memo app. I use my memo note app every time to write down what I'm supposed to purchase, instead of writing it on a paper (waste of paper in my mind since I always have my phone with me). Just search "memo" on Google Play store, and see which one comes to your liking.
Oh, and don't forget "TrueCaller", probably my favorite app. Since It can find out if you're being called by a phone salesman, and you can block those numbers you don't want to answer.
For me, instead of using "Google Play Music Manager", I just connect my phone to the computer, and copy the music/mp3 files like I do to a normal USB memory stick, and just play them using the built in music player (why complicate things (Apple!)).
Or why not use Spotify (yeah, you'll need premium if you want to store some of the playlists on your phone, instead of using the internet all the time).
I think the Music Manager is easier because you can just upload all the music to the Google account, and it syncs to your phone.
FYI, music can just be copied and pasted from your iTunes folder to the "Music" folder on your phone.
User>Music>iTunes>iTunes Media>Music
You have to copy the songs themselves (the MP4 files), not the folders. Pasting the raw song files into the "Music" folder on your phone works wonderfully, it even keeps artist names, album names, and album artwork.

Nova Launcher lags, get GO Launcher. Astro is full of ads go for ES File Explorer. (Also snag the free copy of Elf the movie from Google Play before it goes off sale. It's currently free, courtesy of Google and the holidays.) If you're a gamer get GTA SA, but wait until Christmas in case they do a 1 dollar sale like last year.
Not sure what type of phone you have, but it never lags at all for me and I have a HTC Wildfire S with a single core ARM11 @ 806Mhz. I'm going to guess you have a newer phone so if it lags for you, you must be doing something wrong.

Maybe it's because my entire storage is full. Almost everything lags on there. I'll test it on an S4.
Only if you have an extremely low-end phone. No lag on my Nexus 7, and that's one tier down from the 5's processor, which is currently top of the line.

If you have nothing constructive, don't post.

Worst thing that could happen is that he has to manually re-enter his contacts.
Luckily.
