Hello everyone, I recently got a new computer, a pretty old refurbished desktop gateway with windows xp prof on it, And I need to know how to connect to a router, or how to connect to the internet in general. Help would be nice thanks.
OP is from Canada. Didn't you even check his profile first?
USB adapters are crappy. OP has a desktop, so he could use a PCI or PCI-E one.
no there not, i have a $40 ASUS WIFI-N USB 2.0, and i get the same speeds i would get if i was directly connected, and it has to go through 2 walls (btw, i have tested a direct connection, it gets the same speeds i get over wifi (in real-day use, speedtest's dont reflect upon actual use, as download speeds depend on the server you download from, and upload speeds depend on the server you upload to

When did I say anything about speedtests?
USB adapters are (in general) worse then PCI/PCI-e ones. It's that simple.
Well, someone pretending they know everything, *didn't expect that on the forums* Very little difference between pci, pci-e and USB Wireless adapters, i have owned 4, (and still own 3) and they each cost me about the same, and they all perform the same.
You're both very lucky then.
Every singe USB wifi adapter I've used goes out randomly for ~5 seconds, which is pretty damn annoying when playing online games. Maybe I've gotten crappy ones, but still, they shouldn't do that.

you obviously dont do research on them, ive had my ASUS USB Wifi adapter scince 2011, never had a problem with it
Saying "I have one and I haven't had a problem" isn't considered research either.
If I have an old Volvo, it will drive me around without problems, but a Ferrari would still be faster.
yes, but im saying i did research on my wifi adapter before buying it, so ik that it will last a LONG, time, Tezilov obviously didnt do research on the one he got, so it didnt even last 5 seconds

So just connect an ethernet cable directly to it.
That's about it. Just plug it in.
Either run a cable or buy a wireless device.
Simple.
