The main boost you get from Hawaiian islands will be in the number of ROPs, texture and shader units as well as a boost (maybe) in vram. A big boost from new archtecture is a bit unlikely since AMD is dominating nVidia cards atm so AMD might see this as a time to sit back, relax and let the competition catch up again - like they did a few years back, only they fell behind intel and stayed there up to this day.

I'm pretty sure if AMD wanted to, that they could come out with a CPU that competes with Intel. But I don't think AMD wants to compete head on with Intel. AMD seems to be perfectly content dominating the budget market.
Anyways, I think Intels problem with the budget market is not having enough cores. Most AAA games are starting to utilize more than 2 cores leaving the i3 at a disadvantage to the 4300 and 6300. Even though it's definitely more powerful than the 2 in single core performance.
Not much of an article. Google has a reverse image search if you ever need it, just drag the picture into the search box. http://www.kitguru.n...selling-gtx460/
Some time has passed so there's been slight inflation.
Anyway, you might find this intresting. Hawaii XT's die size is somewhere around 425nm^2. Doesn't sound like to be a Titan killer which was expected but that gives enough room to have a sizable boost from Tahiti, which is 365nm^2.
Huh, thanks for that!
I hope the card is still at least very competitive with the 780. Especially around the 1440p range because that's where I'll be using it. Either way I'm probably just going to get whichever is fastest unless there's a big price difference for similar performance.

HIS accidentally listed one of the new cards and it just had 3gb of vram so unless the companies increase it themselves like with 7970 there aren't going to be boosts there. That said, using more than 3gb is very tricky.
Sorry for the double post, but does anybody know exactly what they're announcing next week? Is it the fact that the cards are indeed coming, or are they going to show some specs as well?
The card(s) themselves, their specifications, when they are coming and possibly any new technology/software to be used with them.
Some leaks if you are interested, take them with a grain of salt as usual. The card itself is from a controlled leak from a DICE developer, so it's almost certainly authentic.
Because it seems to have sixteen memory modules that seems to indicate a 512-bit memory bus which seems like a weird choice if it's not a good deal faster than Tahiti. I would say faster than a 780 would be nothing surprising which would be quite an accomplishment for a die that's over a fifth smaller although the 780 does have some modules disabled.
Well if this is true then I may have to eat my words when some proper reviews come out... In any case, looking forward to official announcement and some benchmarks! Gonna be buying either this or nvidia equivalent so it really can't come soon enough!
Who else thinks the new naming convention for the Volcanic Islands cards is confusing and just stupid?
You and the world. Whoever thought it up was really not thinking straight...
290x, etc. is ok (although completely different from their last gen which may confuse general consumers) but adding in the R9 and whatnot in front just seems stupid.
They should have either done say Radeon 290X, 280X, etc. or APU numbering such as R10-2800 for Hawaii XT, R10-2700 for Hawaii Pro, etc. Right now it's just a random jumble of numbers and letters that's just confusing to the consumer.
Nvidia fan: "I just got my new GTX 780 for Christmas, what did you get?"
AMD fan: "Oh, I got an R9-D280X."

Am I reading that wrong, or does that really compete with the Titan? (and win in a lot of cases?)
Wait, that doesn't make any sense. Why would they call the mid-range cards R9s too? Wouldn't they be R7s or whatever? Then that just defeats the point of having the R designator, just call it the R280X or whatever. If it was generation that would make a little more sense, but 2xx is already the generation number, and in addition if it was the generation why would it start on 9/
Uhm.
There is like
R9 XXX (like R9 580 or R9 420)
Maybe?
In that case what's the point of the 9? I assumed it would refer to hierarchy and R7 would be mid-range, but with that apparently thrown out of the window what's the 9 for? Just call it the R280(X)
They are making yet another pointless naming system just like GT/GTS/GTX and i3/i5/i7.
at least the pentium.i3.i5.i7 names make sense.

Proud member of the MCF AWA war of '13! if someone suggests Alienware or Cyberpower, wait for a custom-built list from someone who knows their stuff. Meh Rig
well it does but it doesn't. for example i would have called the 4670k the 4570k, although besides that it gives you the tier of product right off the bat. Then where it sits inside that tier.
ix/Pentium = tier
4xxx= Generation
x6xx = placement withing the tier and the generation
xx7x = more placement.
xxx0 = extra number to make the number higher so that people think it's better...

What AMD should have done is keep the current scheme until the Radeon brand has run its course. Also jppk1 AMD needs to keep the 'R' to denote the card as part of the Radeon branding.

No they don't, that's like insisting that everyone call the 780 the "GTX 780" or the 7970 the "Radeon HD 7970". Everyone already knows what card it is if you just say "Radeon 280X"

If it isn't a housefire it will be a jetplane. I'm guessing it's a mix of both...
Just wait till custom designs are launched, they'll be much better.
But why would they start on 9? The whole point of moving to a new naming scheme was because they were running out of generation numbers.

Only a day or two left now as well. Hopefully they stick true to the under $600 range. Still doubting it though, especially with the leaked specs.
