The Radeon R9 290X is based upon AMD's Hawaii GPU from the Volcanic Islands line to compete with NVIDIA's GTX TITAN. The Radeon R9 290X has 11 compute units, 44 SMIDs, 2816 Stream processors, 44 ROPs, 4GB of RAM, dual DVI ports plus HDMI and DisplayPort, and will sell for around $600 USD.
Amd announced some specs and prices in hawaii. http://www.techpower...on-r9-290x.html R7 250 and R7 260 under $150, R9 270X under $200, R9 280X $299, and R9 290X price unreleased.
No PROPER information about 290x though. I'm considering 780 or 290x and some proper info with a exact benchmark numbers could've helped decide that. Why on earth didn't they release the price of it yet they did with the other cards?
I think the designs look nice, in the end it sits inside your case if they cool fine who cares.
This was mostly a software announcement Mantle is a pretty damn big deal.
Reference cards ain't known for their great cooling either. In any case I'll be getting a custom card for either 780 or 290x because I really want it to be quiet.
Mantle does sound interesting though so I'm looking forward to seeing if it actually works as well as they say it does. Hope we get some examples of that soon!
read an article about some linked specs / pics about them. the 290x will come in 4gb and 8gb versions, and will have a whopping 512-bit memory bus. Sounds promising.
AMDs audio thing is supposed to not harm performance. So it is possible the main GPU arch is the same they would have some extra features. I will see the official specs before I am 100% sure it is a rebrand.
What he's saying is he bought into the hype that AMD's new cards would make nVidia look like an afterthought. With what was unveiled, the new cards are the minor announcement. Mantle is huge.
Mantle *might* be huge. We haven't seen any proof of it actually working and working better than dx11 at that. I do have high hopes for it though as it sounds interesting. I have a feeling it's going to end up being one of those things that is only used in a few games like physx, mostly because it would cut out over half of their customer base if they only used mantle and it seems like it would be a lot more work to use both mantle AND directx. Even if they got it working on nvidia gpu's it would need to work in the same way to make it easier for devs to use and even then it would cut out a lot of their customers that use older cards. (which according to steam a LOT of people still do)

Large bus /= performance however. 8gb is also utterly useless. The cards would get such low fps in the games where they need 8gb that it would be useless. There are only a couple of situations where people have even managed to get close to using all 6gb on the titans and that was with 3x1600p.
Another thing on mantle.
While this may get amd slightly ahead, nvidia can also use it. It is an open api.
AMD still controls it. AMD has already worked on its implementation if Nvidia does decide to use Mantle it could be some time. It is not about AMD gaining an advantage it is about improving the industry and moving beyond these high level APIs.

I think it will be good for people who know how to use it, I'm sure it's quite possible to brick GPU's with it if it's as low level as I think it is.

Woo. They are cheap! the R9 290x is interesting. ALmost no price and specs. Cooler looks ok. Doesn't match the titan/690 cooler but there are always non-reference cards.
fm87!When will price be announced and proper game benches be available?

Well if they're only just catching up to titans performance (if they can even catch up with these cards)... Titan has been out what, 7 months? :/

I don't think you have heard of the following:
