VI is a short way of saying 'volcanic islands' which are the upcoming new graphics cards from AMD. The rumours have been saying they have great performance, but they also mentioned under $600 price for their best card, which leaves me a little sceptical about their performance.
The 7970 launched at $550 or so and it was about as big a jump over the last generation cards as VI will be this turn around.

Yea, but it was also more expensive than the competition. Companies usually don't release things cheaper AND better. I'm hoping they will but I'm sceptical. I'm personally getting the feeling it's going to end up like the 6970 vs gtx 580 (with the 9970 vs 780). As I said though, I'm hoping they are better. Then I can get one.

They've been waiting for more than a year and a half to release this. There's no way it wouldn't be as powerful as the 780.
That was pretty much just an evolution of the 5000 series.
Yea it was, but we still don't have any concrete details about the 9000 series anyway. Just gotta wait and see. Like I said though, 6970 launched lower than 580 because it couldn't quite compete and the 9970 is doing it again although this time it might actually be better. Time will tell I guess.

6970 consumed less power than 580 and cost less if I recall correctly. It competed more with 570, so it looks like there was another 7970/780 going on there.
So basically OP this is what you want to consider:
1.Get a 7970 which can't into AA in triple monitor configurations but will most likely wont have card/driver issues
2.Get 2 7950s which will wreck the 7970 and have POSSIBLE driver/card issues which you can google.
You can't just snap your fingers and make CrossFire work.
So what I'm hearing in my head is dual 7950s will be more powerful than a single 7970, but more expensive and buggy?
Depending on what prices you find for them, but they will be more powerful and more buggy. I still recommend 2x1080p screens and one 7970 or 770 because there are issues with dual cards but a single card won't get a high enough framerate for me in a fair few games. I'm picky like that.

Yeah I guess if I go with 2 monitors and a single card I can save a lot.
I don't NEED 3 monitors anyways, it's just a case of getting rid of some bezel and optimizing multitasking experience.
Ok cool, either are good choices. Mostly just comes down to price and whether you want to deal with crossfire issues or not. 3 screens is quite a cool experience when everything is working properly though!
Yah, I love my dell u2713hm. Although I will admit it isn't as productive as 2 1080p screens which I had before I moved to this. I should have kept a screen but I gave one to a friend and one to my sister so I'd feel bad asking for one back now.
EDIT: Not as good at multitasking, still great, but not quite 2 screens level. I love my 2713hm (a dell 1440p ips screen) more than my old 2x1080p setup though, games and everything have never looked so beautiful. Plus making digital art is lovely on such a big screen.

Hmm...
I don't know.
Wouldn't a TV work good if I wanted a bigger screen? Then I could have dual/triple monitors at 1080p and a TV when I want a bigger screen.

Again, 6970.... Slower than 580 and came out way later.
EDIT: Not way later, but later nonetheless...

7970 = $400
7950 = $250-300
Dual 7950s are $500-600.

You didn't include Windows 7 and he did, and that's like 80 bucks.
Also he has peripherals, which is also like 160 bucks.
For any future reference though, this is the current build I'm looking at.
(of course I'm still looking into peripherals, video cards, CPU Cooler etc. Pretty much everything is not rock-solid, except OS cause I ain't touching Windows 8 and no, I will not install Linux, also my monitors are already chosen, http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=320-2807)

How will multitasking work in that case?

TVs work horrible as screens, they always overscan and have horrible pixel density and response time.
