If you're building a brand new computer, you should look into the new Sandy Bridge processors. If you're upgrading a computer that's already using the AMD platform, then I agree with above, get the Phenom II x4 955 BE.
how about the and AMD Phenom II X4 970 black edition? it runs at 3.5 GHz and is only 30$ more, and i love intel, but its a bit expensive for its pricing, but very good, and ill eventually upgrade to a i7

It's $30 more for something you can do yourself. Get the 955.

Yep. You can easily get the 955 to work atleast 3,6Ghz with just increasing multiplier, for higher than that it starts to depend from your memory quality etc..
I was unaware that raising the CPU multi would increase the memory speed. o.O

Did I say it would? If you know anything about overclocking, you should know that even if increasing multiplier wont directly affect to memory's speed or anything, slow cheap memory sticks will begin to struggle at those speeds creating errors and bsod's. They just can't keep up with the cpu. Like mine right now, I can't go past 3,8Ghz because with higher clocks there will come memory errors and instant bsod's when giving the cpu max load.
Not quite. You just have some shitty sticks.

They're different generations of technology. Athlon X2 is the older one, Phenom is the newer one.
First of all, it's athlon II. Second of all, actually athlon II is newer, but it's not as good as phenom II. They're just cheaper "class" than phenom II and they're not so powerful.

If you don't plan on overclocking, don't bother with the black editions. No sense in paying extra for something if you don't intend to use it.
Phenom II 955 Black Edition is the cheapest quad with decent L3 cache and clock speed, so how can he save? And actually he saves money buying the 955 because it's very easy to bumb up the clocks to 3,5Ghz with multiplier. After that it's same as 970, which costs 30$ more...
This.
