I'm planning to get a new laptop and I stumbled across one. I really like it but I don't know how good it performs. How much fps do I get with these specs?
Intel Core i5-5200U (Up to 2.7 GHz)
NVIDIA Geforce 940m 2GB
8 GB RAM
Sorry if this is in the wrong section. This is my first time posting a thread here. I would really appreciate some replies. Thanks
The FPS you will attain using this laptop will be around 30 to 90 FPS, I think.
30-90 FPS.. You do realize that is a 60 FPS difference which is an extreme difference.
Back to your question;
8GB RAM = Perfect, any more RAM is a waste of money unless you are hosting a server.
Nvidia Geforce 940m 2GB = Beautiful, 2GB will be perfect.
2.7GHz = Trash.. This will be a negative factor for you without a doubt in my mind.
So all after analyzing I would put it around 40FPS for the following reason;
Minecraft is a sandbox game which relies mainly on CPU power, 2.7 GHz just won't cut it.
940M isn't exactly a beautiful GPU, it's similar to Iris Pro HD 5200. There are obviously better alternatives. Why are you saying that the VRAM will be perfect? We're talking about performance here, not capacity.
2.7GHz is completely irrelevant, clock speed =/= performance. By talking purely about the clock speed, you're literally saying that an FX-8350 is better than an i5-6600K because it's 4GHz and the 6600K is 3.5GHz, when the 8350 gets rekt. Likewise, with an even bigger contrast using the i5-6400, the 8350 still gets beaten when the 6400 is only 2.7GHz (trash? kek). The 6700K and the 8350 are both clocked at 4GHz yet the 6700K absolutely destroys it. Performance comes down to many more factors than pure GHz - SMT or CMT, architecture (big one, and not just the size of the transistor), IPC, cores, HT, FSB/DMI/QPI, the list goes on and on, even external factors like RAM can affect CPU performance. None of these can be used on their own to determine an entire CPUs performance, they all have to be combined and thought about and linked together to give a CPUs performance. Obviously as I just showed you, the best and most absolute way to determine CPU performance is by using benchmarks. Clock speed does become a factor of performance however if we're comparing two of the same/similar CPUs. An i3-6300 very slightly beats an i5-6600 in single core benchmarks because of its clock speed, and that is only because they're the exact same CPU architecturally. It's only in very specific cases like these that it can be a factor.
Minecraft doesn't mainly rely on CPU power. This is a huge misconception. It's now mostly graphically intensive, as with practically all video games (unless you have some complex strategies like Ashes of the Singularity, Stellaris, EU4, CK2, etc, MC is not anywhere near these). Also 40FPS isn't very bad considering you're rating it "trash".
@OP, the laptop will run MC fine, but it'd be nice to know how much you're spending so we can potentially find you something even better for the price, since it's a bit iffy.
Beautiful compared to his price-point..
CPU Performance is perfectly relevant to a computers performance that makes no sense whatsoever.
Clock speed is not the only factor that corresponds to CPU performance, that's what we're getting at. IPC is MUCH more important and Intel CPUs have good enough of IPC that they can make up for lower clocks.
Same difference; the CPU should be better is the bottom line.

Not this again. As always you have no proof to back up your preposterous claims, and keep making generic meaningless statements.
His CPU is more than enough for playing Minecraft. Hell I had the exact same CPU (i5-5200U) on my Macbook Air and I got around 80-120 fps maxed out, and that's with an inferior graphics card. And it was definitely my GPU holding me back.
To furthermore dispute your claims, my current Macbook has a 4 year old 2.3GHz i7, and I easily get 150-200 fps fully maxed out, and that's with a pretty mediocre GT 650M.

That's not true. It will take the toll of CPU usage upon playing Minecraft.
My budget is around $800. Also Im looking for a laptop not a pc, so that I can bring it with me when I travel. Also thanks for all your replies
