Planning on buying a new laptop. I just need to play LoL and some low end games (FTL, AoE, etc) in addition to schoolwork. However, some of my school projects require some decent amounts of RAM/CPU power, so I can't really shoot that much lower for specs. I'm still very new to computers, but this seemed like a good deal for my requirements. Is there anything potentially better? My budget is around $500.

You could do WAY better than that . A Pentium is not going do well in even low end games.
For $509, this laptop will be infinitely better https://www.amazon.com/Acer-E5-573G-15-6-Inch-i5-5200U-Windows/dp/B012IBOCRU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484434998&sr=8-1&keywords=GT 940m
