I have an opportunity to get a laptop with a rebate for next to nothing, but there's only a select few I can choose from. The one I am most interested in is the Acer M5-481PT-6644. 6GB DDR3 memory, 500GB HDD plus 20GB SSD, Intel i5 dual core processor at 1.8GHz up to 2.7GHz with Turbo Boost. It also has a 14 inch touchscreen.
Even though there's no dedicated graphics, will this laptop run Minecraft smoothly? Please don't recommend a desktop or anything as I want a laptop for other purposes as well.
Depends on which iGPU it is. HD 4000 can play it comfortably at medium render distance.
Are there any APU laptops in the choices? Those would probably be better for gaming in general.
It is HD 4000. Unfortunately the only one I found with and AMD processor was the cheapest model they offered, and I didn't really like everything else that it had. If I had the choice, I'd prefer an AMD, but with everything else this laptop offers for the price I can get it for, I was hoping the Intel would be sufficient.
They actually make 20GB SSDs?
Well that'll be full quick enough to the point where it doesn't actually has a benefit to have it. It wouldn't even fit Windows on there.
Anyway, Integrated Graphics will be pushing it for Minecraft. Some say they get good frame rates with HD4000, but when I tried it it struggled quite a bit with it.
Yea I'm aware that they are pretty much good for loading times. It would be nice to put Windows on it to boot up, but that's not really a deal breaker for me. If I can throw a few games or whatever on it, it can't hurt.
And honestly, it doesn't have to be buttery smooth for me. I just want something that's able to play it at a somewhat decent fps, hopefully without lagging. I haven't even played Minecraft for PC yet because the computers I have tried it on weren't compatible for one reason or another (they are fairly outdated). I just want to be able to play it. Some people say any modern computer can run Minecraft, but others say there are certain specs your PC should have. I'm just hoping this laptop will be decent.
As long as the games are lightweight games like Minecraft. You'd only be able to fit 1 or 2 larger games, and some may not even fit at all, like Bioshock Infinite.
I am by no means a "PC gamer", and Minecraft will very likely be the only game I would play on it. If I did play larger and more intensive games, I would probably go for something else.
The Aspire V5-571PG-9814 is also one of the choices on the site, a 2GHz i7 processor with 8GB ram and Nvidia graphics, plus a 15.6 inch display. However, it's $250 more and that's the absolute roof of my budget. Would the price difference be justified? If the M5 will run it on decent settings, then I don't see why getting the V5 would make sense. Keep in mind, Minecraft would very likely be the only game I would play. Here are the Amazon links:
Are they too good to be true? It seems like they have everything spec-wise. The touchscreens that the others have was an added bonus, not sure how much I'd use it anyway. Any thoughts?
I think it's pretty much between the Gateway NV52L23u and the originally posted Acer M5-481PT-6644. Again, I would mainly be using this for basic things, internet browsing, office, other things, and I would also like to play Minecraft on it with decent performance, maybe ~30fps and normal settings? I would probably be playing with a few friends occasionally as well. HDD space isn't really a concern, and either a 14" or 15.6" screen is fine with me. I guess the big differences here are the processors, their clock speeds, and reliability, all compared to what I will be using this laptop for. Any further opinions?
Could you get an Asus K55N or Lenovo Z585? Either of those would own pretty much any of the laptops listed at Minecraft.
Unfortunately the selection almost entirely consists of Acers, with a few Gateways mixed in. It it wasn't for the price, I would probably go with something else.
Any further input on this? I'll need to decide which one I'm gonna go with fairly soon, and I want to hear more opinions from more knowledgeable people than me regarding this topic.
