International standards say that multiplication and division are given equal precedence and performed left to right. There is only one correct answer to this mathematical formula, and it is 288.
I was always taught that x(y+z) =xy+xz, using the distributive property, combined with PEMDAS.

Except you're distributing in the wrong order. In this case your 'x' is '48/2', not '2'. The distributive property is a property of multiplication, which has the same precedence as division, so evaluation of the two proceeds left to right.

No. Multiplication and division are the same tier. Either your math teacher didn't teach you that (highly unlikely), or you rely too much on the acronym.
This isn't algebra, this is elementary math. I hate to sound rude, but if you don't know order of operations, you probably haven't been paying attention in math class. Or your still in fourth grade.
Personally, I think this is more of an argument of syntax than order of operations. The way I read it is 48/(2(9+3)) [equals 2]. When I see a number immediately followed by something in parentheses I read that as being a single number, so I read 2(9+3) as if it were a single number (24). The horizontal division sign makes that even stronger. If it were written 48/2 * (9+3) then I see it as 24*12.
Personally, you're wrong. It is a matter of order of operations. High school level algebra 1. Go pass it.

1/2 is the same as 2^-1 (2 to the power of -1), simple math, try it on your calculator and you'll get the same thing.
48/2 is the same as 48 * 1/2, and the same as 48 * (2^-1), associative law.
Division is just another form of multiplication. People needs to learn and remember the communative and associative laws.
Another way to solve the equation;
48/2(9+3) <==> 24 * (9 + 3) <==> 24 * 9 + 24 * 3 <==> 24 * 9 + 24 * 3 <==> 216 + 72 <==> 288
or
48/2(9+3) <==> 48/2*9 + 48/2*3... <==> 288
Remember, 48/2(9+3) is not the same as 48/(2(9+3))!
48/(2(9+3)) = 2, the paranthesises matter.
That just makes it really confusing. But yes, the answer is 288 according to order of operation.
RPN needs none of those confusing order of operations. It's simply never ambiguous ever.
I've been taught BEDMAS (Canadian) but I don't give a about it.
