I am fixated on the idea of building my own PC. I am good with computer terminology, great with software. Hell, I even know a little bit of java. But when it comes to hardware, I seriously suck.

Is this a good system to pursue? I did my research. Is there anything that I could change or get more bang for my buck? I am a first time PC builder, so I honestly don't know what kind of hardware would be best for my needs.
Thanks!

Edit: My budget is ~1000 CAD. If someone can refine my original build to something more powerful / better value that would be great!
That graphics card is bottom of the barrel absolutely dreadfully horrible.
The RAM is overpriced, and you do not need 16GB, nor do you need 1600MHz RAM.
You are using the PSU included with a case, which is a big no-no. Even then, the PSU you selected would not be near powerful enough for a better video card.
You do not need a bluray writer. At all.
You do not need a bluray drive unless you already have a large bluray collection. This means more than 10-15 blurays. If you do not have that many, already, you don't need it. The format is dying in favor of digital downloads.
Alright, thanks for the feedback. I didn't realize that the drive I chose could write bluray, whoops. hehe.
I've updated the build with a different GPU, a different case, different RAM and a new power supply. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cvWY
8GB of RAM should cost you no more than $45 at the absolute max. I have no idea why that RAM is $77. You don't need to fill all memory slots for dual channel RAM, just one stick in each channel, so 2x4GB would be your best bet here.
Also, you could save a fair chunk on your motherboard. For your purposes the ASrock Extreme3 Gen3 that me and Fm have would work well (that is, unless there is a better board for the price at the moment).
For your budget I'd say go for the HD 7850. A good 500W PSU should be plenty.
