Around Christmas I plan on upgrading my current build and using the old parts for a small Minecraft server for me and my friends.
No more then 5 people will be on at once.
It would use:
GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
i would just run if off your desktop, plenty of power to host a server without trouble
I can't get wired internet that way.
How hard is it to go from one Ethernet jack thingy to another? I have one in my room but I don't know how hard it would be to move the modem to a different jack.

I'm back from my eternal slumber of 2 or 3 months. A long-ass time.
Oh boy, visual basic. I can barely contain my excitement.Not.

i don't think so, if it's in there it should allready be wired and ready to go, and if you WiFi is stable enough you could do 5 people over it
My WiFi is the worst thing ever. I can hardly connect to it let alone 5 people.
Also, would this build work if I were to run it off a seperate system? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6NkL There are some cheap-ass parts in there anything that is just horrible? This would be solely for a servering.

overkill PSU, just shove like a 350W in there that is 80+ and you'll be fine
Better off getting a little "Shuttle" box instead of a mid tower and everything, most Shuttles come with their own PSU which tbh is decent depending case brand.

I will look into them to see if I can find any reliable brands but after seeing fm87's little presentation I'm not trusting them very much.

A baby HDD like this
4GB of RAM
It will run Linux
This PSU
I plan on plugging it in directly to my modem/router and not really messing with it very often. Would this support 5 people?

So I don't need to activate the plug or anything? That is friggin' badass.

that should be ok, let me check to be sure
yeah that server would use like 300W so maybe a 400W for safety's sake, but you should be ok with that

Actually ignore that, just stick with your current build list. They are not really worth it in most cases, if at all.
Yeah, its cheap and I should still have $400-$500 for the improvement.
