Hello inhabitants on CST. We are currently collecting votes for a new-subsection, namely one COMPLETELY dedicated to computer hardware like "Building new computer", "Is X GFX card better then Y?", "I have X dollars, what should I get?" and stuff like that.
So, the question is: Is it NEEDED? To we NEED a section like this?
So vote and discuss and provide input if you like. :happy.gif:
Maybe doing the opposite, leaving hardware in the main one and other stuff such as Science, Phones, and Software in subsections so that Science freaks can talk in peace and people looking for phones can look in peace etc.
Most of the threads on this forum are about hardware, so I don't think a subforum for it would be practical. Lots of people would ignore it.

What we need are dedicated mods to remove all the "I WANT MAEK GAMEZ; NEED CODERRZZ" threads and a big flashy banner saying "No Minecraft-related Posts!"
Those should just be removed due to being spam...
I think there should be a section for tech support instead, I always see threads about that.

Already against the rules the Minecraft one. Report and it shall be dealt with. And if the team searchers offer money it's history as well.
Already against the rules the Minecraft one. Report and it shall be dealt with. And if the team searchers offer money it's history as well.
The problem is that none of these people read the rules and it boils down to 100% spam.
Not just spam because the OP is spam, but spam because everyone's replies are always the same, eg: "What you are trying to do will not happen, why should we join you? Where is your portfolio?" etc.
I am unsure how to combat this aside from making the rules sticky more noticeable, and possibly giving stricter moderation in these cases. I am not talking about reporting the post and then letting a mod deal with it I am talking about having a dedicated mod actually reading the forum who can take care of them swiftly, and possibly post copypasta related to the OP in question. As far as I can tell most of the mods only pop in here once in a while and spend the rest of their time in OT/FG.
I think what is really needed is a dedicated sticky along the lines of the "how bad is your computer" thread where all of the "build your PC" posts are condensed into one. Inside of this sticky the OP (whoever it is) can post links, guides, and generally keep it updated every few months so people aren't acting like headless chickens.
This would not only reduce the spammy-ness of the forum, but considering every budget/most people can follow cookie-cutter (if you will) builds, there is no need for them to have their own threads. There are very few configurations for PCs in general (save for motherboards/cases) so there would be little confusion.
edited for formatting because my spacebar is broken.
I am also wondering if there is something we can do along the lines of "If you don't know, don't post" as there have been a lot of people either suggesting extremely overkill hardware, or suggesting "fixes" to things software wise that end up breaking something, requiring the OP to go and reinstall their OS since it is no longer a simple fix.
The latter is what really pains me though, as it makes my job a HELL of a lot harder now that not only is the original issue still there, but now I have to fix what the other posters told them to do as well.
Personally, I think a coding section may be a better idea, as originally suggested in forum discussion. That way, it may keep things a lot more organized and simpler, since that is one thing that is completely different from the majority of the other discussion.
This actually would be a much better idea. If we can keep the coding/looking for team/help with java/etc. posts into a single forum we can leave this forum mostly as it is without gutting a large portion of the posts related to software.
EG:
Computers, Software & Technology - General tech discussion, hardware and software (already released software), operating systems, tech support, misc tech, etc. Programming, Coding & Scripting - how to learn a language, general programming, how to make certain programs, what it takes to make a game/program, making a forum/website, etc.
This would possibly require a mod with a lot of knowledge in the area, however.
I think the best solution here is to have a dedicated moderator, I am sure it would elevate 80% of the problems in this sub-section. Because there really isn't many other problems besides the aforementioned spam posts.
If you where to create another sub-section the best separation would be to create a programming sub-section because for most of the techs and regulars here we have limited knowledge of programming. As a result of this we offer limited replies to these threads and they generally end up dying.
I voted "NO"
Then changed to other
We need a sticky for Alienwares and Macs discussions.

As many will agree we need a "Why not to get a prebuilt or mac" and a "PC Building Guide" stickies. We also need a dedicated mod for this section. Maybe fm87?

But my opinion means nothing, I don't post anymore.

More mods are being looked into. Maybe next week or so. Soon™.

I am not going to support any change designed to censor someone just because it's a silly or blatantly wrong suggestion and any moderator caught doing so will be reprimanded. We don't do censoring and that is not me speaking that's the guys above me speaking. All that you can do about that is suggest proper information and de-construct the other persons suggestion. If they then start to harass you then we can do something about it.
I'm not quite sure about having a hardware-only section, though I could see it cleaning up the forum a bit. However then it becomes the question of placing the line, what goes where? Many threads could fall into both categories, which not only confuses the user, but may make it harder to navigate. This includes routers, mobile devices, peripherals, or an error/problem.

The reason for the switch to Hardware is that when we looked here at topics and posts, there where a minuscule amount relating to programming and the like so it doesn't have enough activity to warrant a sub-board of its own. Map Showcase and Reviews is a perfect example of this. Many demanded it, they got it, it's largely unused. 37 topics in +/- two weeks. This great lack of activity doesn't warrant its own board.
However the grand majority of the posts in here is hardware related. Details of what goes and what doesn't go in there will be sorted if the hardware section is wanted then you can talk all about coding here along with other stuff related to this section.

I see, actually I didn't think of it like censoring but now that you've brought it up it makes sense why nothing has been done.
But what about posts like "delete system32" or "it's fine, you can delete those hidden files on C: like NTLDR" or other ones that are purposefully there for someone to damage their system? Would those be 'reportable' if you will? In the past I have reported people for suggesting such things (one in particular told the OP that it was fine to jam his second 12v rail into the extra 4 spots of the 24 pin power connector because only 20 were taken up, thankfully we got to it in time) and their posts had stayed up with the user unbanned [continued making posts], even though there was no continuation of their quotes or trolling/discussions/arguing of the like going on past my (or someone else's) "do not do this, do this instead".

I think this really depends on the day, to be honest.
Some days the front page will be flooded with "CAN THIS BUILD WORK" and the like, while some days it will be flooded with "how do I learn java", "how do I learn to code in java", "what is a good java tutorial" etc..
Looking back at the problem in itself, I have to wonder if an entire new forum is necessary, or just a sticky? Then again, if the stickies get ignored once it's made as much as they do now, a subforum would probably have been better.
This whole section needs a good tidy up and a stop to repetitive threads.
1: Help me decide parts for my new gaming rig.
2: What FPS will I get with this rig?
3: How fast is your internet? Post here!
4: Post a pic of your rig.
5: Can this laptop/PC run Minecraft?
There are dozens of such threads. Either sticky them, combine them or create a specific subsection that caters for them. It is becoming almost impossible to get through to interesting and informative posts due to all the noise.
Thus, I think, was what he was talking about. All of those threads would fall into the hardware category, and be sent off to the new subforum.
The more I think about it the more I like it, however, we will definitely need expanding on what exactly falls into hardware and what falls into software. Internet speed, for example, is dependent on both.
I think the MAIN problem here is that once you divide/sort the subforum, you will have a number of people who simply stay in one not the other, greatly reducing the amount of "help" given. I would of course browse both, but I have a feeling I am in a minority.
Then again, I'd say half the 'users' in this subforum mainly lurk and only post once in a while. So I could be completely wrong.
Really there's only about 10-15 regulars on at all different times if you split it up it may just kill us entirely.
10-15 posting, however there is a far larger number who lurk and sometimes post (you can see at the bottom of the forum).
At this moment, for example, (it's not a very good time to be talking about activity numbers since it's an inactive time on a weekday) there are 15 people browsing the forum, while only 2-3 are actively posting.
So, the question is: Is it NEEDED? To we NEED a section like this?
So vote and discuss and provide input if you like. :happy.gif:
