So, a couple of years ago I bought a Windows 7 upgrade disc for my laptop, as it came with Vista installed. My questions are:
1. Can I use this disk to install Windows 7 on a computer I will build? I have both the 32 bit and 64 bit discs, and I've only used the 32 bit to upgrade my laptop.
2. Can I use the same product code I got with the disks?
3. (If the answer is no to number two.) Can I use the disks I have and buy a new product code online and install Windows 7?
4. (If all questions answers are no) Is there somewhere where students can buy 64 bit editions of Windows 7 for less than $99?
If the answer is no to all of these, I'll just have to buy another copy of Windows.
You CAN use an upgrade disk to install Windows 7, BUT you need to have an XP install disk to use on the system first. I don't know the legality of this, but if you have only used it on one machine I believe it falls under the rule of three if they still use it.

I don't think the upgrade disk will work unless the computer already has vista or xp already installed. You will have to buy a new version of windows 7.
Ok don't listen to any of these guys, no offence to anyone.
You can only use the upgrade disc to upgrade from vista or xp. You cannot use it as a new install.
You can buy upgrade or full copies of the OS online from microsoft.com, under the buy tab.
Unfortunately, prices are marked at $200 for a new install of the OS.
For less than $99, you could try ebay, but whether it will be legitimate is beyond me
Herp derp, I will buy an OEM copy of the OS. They are priced at $99.
The only reason I thought that I could use the upgrade disk is because it said to upgrade from XP to 7 you need to select full install or uninstall XP or something like that.

So you assume that everyone else should know your intentions automatically?

Sorry if I offended you, but most people on these forums do know that buying an OEM edition of Windows is much cheaper than buying direct from Microsoft.

Edit: Sorry of not being much help :tongue.gif:
LOL I'd have to agree. But getting games to run on Linux is a *****.
