Yeah I know I've been asking a bunch of crap today, but now I'm gonna upgrade my OS. But the thing is, it's not an installation disc and I don't know how much different it is when using USB. Can anyone tell me the steps to doing it? I don't want to **** ANYTHING up. Because I generally just try to "figure things out" but end up screwing it up.
First of all, have you bought the lisense keys for Windows 7? Second, is your computer 64 Bit? Finally, is it a legit installer, or one you made using a program?

My brother gave me a flashdrive with Windows 7 on it, apparently it has everything I need for it considering he upgraded to it. Secondly, no "XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit"

Yes, I know everything will get deleted.
If your computer can boot off of the flash drive, you should be ok, but do you have a lisense key for the computer once you do it, or it will only run for 30 days.

Booting off a flashdrive? Isn't that like the number one thing NOT to do? Running an OS off of a flashdrive? Either way, I accidentally tried that and it just sat there at the black screen with the flashing _ at the top corner.
And, I think my dad has the key on his laptop (the OS came with his computer, and my brother took it off and put it on his. Not sure if this is entirely legal, but idc, haha.)
Should have no issues booting off a flash drive. When you boot it will on most computer show up as another harddrive. Some others will pick it up as a flash disk.
If you only have the iso use this tool.

First of all, you can't take lisense keys and move them from computer to computer, and secondly, I would recommend staying with Xp until you can actually buy a lisense fro MICROSOFT. It is illegal if you take the disk and burn it to flash drive. BTW, flash drives are NOT good for installs. If it breaks during the install, you will be stuck without an OS.
(Note:I have done this before, except from 2000 to XP. Almost the same, except All computers(Except Netbooks) can boot off of a CD Drive)

But if I boot off of a flashdrive, wouldn't that mean I can alternate between Win 7 64-bit and XP 32-bit. If so, wouldn't that mean I'd still have to reinstall tons of programs for Windows 7 because they're not 64-bit compatible?

No it is not illegal to put a disk on a FlashDrive it is a much faster way to install then a disk. If your disk breaks mid install aren't you just as screwed, also Flash drives don't get scratched so they could be considered safer.

The tool I linked you simply makes it so the FlashDrive can be booted and installed from just like the disk.
Moving between operating system means you are going to have to reinstall stuff just the way it is.

I'll just have to ask my brother how he got it working. I'm not willing to waste away a couple hundred dollars on something almost identical to windows 8 which is free. But I don't want windows 8 because I heard there were a few weird problems with it.

The Windows 8 you can download is a TRIAL! It commits supuku(Kills itself) when the real one comes out.
BTW, Windows 8 is cloud. I am not going cloud. Sticking with my Linux box until I can afford the new laptop I want.

Well then, this is my only option considering I can't just stick with XP 32-bit. I've been buying new parts to make this a gaming computer and all that's left is more ram, but 32-bit can't support more than 4gigs, so it's time to upgrade.

He wants to Install Windows 7 as his ONLY OS, not Dualbooting. CDs also run extremley fast. The USB by design has Upload/Download Caps. Alsdo, the Windows 7 install is a DVD, so it would have to be a really big flash drive. Some drivers may not be correct for his computer.

It is not a trial it is a preview for developers to take a look and get a head start on developing applications for it.
When the Win7 release candidate ended they gave people 6 months before it locked them out.
What do you mean going cloud. Cloud is a stupid term anyway all it means it working with stuff not being local to your computer. With the windows domain and network drives you could say it has had cloud support for a long long time.
You're not really stuck without an Operating system, you just have to use a recovery disk (if you made one) Or install a Linux distro and wipe the drive and install windows as a clean install. However that does not exactly work well if it is a OEM, as I have found out.

Never said anything about dualbooting. CD speeds get kicked in the balls by Flash memory. The Win7 installers is only like 3.2gigs not very large that is like a 5$ USB stick.

All of the files were only about 3.5GB total. Took up a whole flashdrive just about.

I know that, but any "private" files will be able to be looked at by Microsoft.(Sorry, I have trust issues with a company that made a friend waste 70 dollars on gas to buy a new Xbox.

I believe that I had said that. Try the assistant.
I'll check but I don't see why I wouldn't be able to upgrade.
