You seriously just told him "nVidia GeForce" instead of a specific model? You really don't need an amazing card to play minecraft, a Radeon HD 5450 would run it, however if you want to play other games such as Battlefield 3 or Skyrim, and you have a little money, you might want to get somethin like a 6850. (If you are going to be playing those games, and have a little money)

AMD Phenom II 965 @ 3.40GHz | 4GB 1600MHz | Antec 300 Mid-Tower Case | Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 | 500GB Western Digital Blue 7200RPM | ASRock M3A770DE AM3 Motherboard | Light-On DVD / CD Drive | Corsair 600W 80+ PSU |
Minecraft is more CPU intensive then graphics card, so if it's laggy even on short / fast it is more then likely the CPU itself and not the graphics card.
also what type of computer are you using to play it? specs would be a huge help along with your budget
I find it runs perfectly fine even with hd texture packs (sometimes runs faster than default) on Intel HD Graphics card. Not the best from what ive heard but runs it fine.
EDIT: dont spam me with 'intel suxx blahblah' please.
My Sapphire Radeon 4850 runs it at around 40-60 fps with a full HD texture pack.

Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has one and some stink, now if someone says your armpits stink it isn't very polite to go rubbing it in their face, it isn't going to make them say yours doesn't stink it'll just make them dislike you and your armpit even more. Remember keep your armpits and opinions respectful.
I would like to know does getting a new video card take pressure off the cpu. and what would stop my computer from freezing persistently while playing minecraft and running skype at the same time. thanks

You need a new cpu...adding a graphics card won't help unless you are looking to waste your money. Do you mean you have 3GB of RAM?
New CPU.
You got enough ram for minecraft, although 4GB is better.
If you want to just get a new cpu get an AMD lano there cheap and got a dedicated graphics card built into the cpu.
Whats your budget then?
