So im saving up to build a new gaming PC and ill be spending around $1500. Its been a couple years since ive had my hand in buying high performance hardware so i could use a guidance so i dont make a stupid mistake.
Although i dont have any specifics nailed down i do have a few ideas im heading towards
However when looking at mobos with an AM3 socket the ones i could find didnt support 24 gb of memory, and many also seemed to be built to go with ATI gfx, and im an Nvidia fanboy.
When it comes to GFX cards what is the most up to date series? i kind-of tuned out after they finished with the GeForce series.
For gaming its a waste to get the X6, I would get the i5 2500K, much newer, faster, and has a better upgrade future.
Here is what I have (not including the monitor I am saving up for) that cost 1,200, + the monitor = 1,500.
CPU: i5 2500K
Motherboard: Asrock P67 Extreme 4 (I would get an msi P67A-GD53 though)
ram: Cheap 2x4GB ram
Video Card: Radeon 6950 1GB (though you can get a GTX 560 Ti if you want nvidia, I recommend the PNY model, cheap and has some pretty good reviews so far)
Yes, the GPU is ATi/AMD, but I reccommend it. It can OC to a 6970 which other brand cards can't. Alternatively, it you don't want the ATi/AMD GPU, you can get this:

I know that most modern games wont even use all 6 cores, However I feel that its more conciencious to sort of plan ahead. Most serious gamers at this point are using quad cores right now and before long they will be using 6 cores, So why spend 300 on a really fast duel core when ill probably be behind in a few months when i can buy an equally fast 6 core(with over clocking) that will provide additional levels of functionality? Plus wouldnt a Mobo with an AM3 socket stay up to date longer than one that has a duel core socket? like wont the sockets on an am3 board be up to date longer?

By the time they do use 6 cores that CPU will need to be upgraded anyhow. The i5 will work much better and be compatible with ivy bridge processors. No, AM3 sockets are about to be dumped actually, giving them less of an upgrade path.
Okay, here is where you are wrong. Lets pretend that the AMD you chose is an Audi 5.2 V10 engine with 525 HP and the intel I chose is a maserati GranTurismo S with a V8 engine 440 HP. They both end up, lets say, being about 120,000 USD. You may say, "Why not get the Audi, so much better for the same price?" Well, the Maserati has a few tricks up its sleeves. Its design and weight allows it to out perform the Audi by miles. If you didn't understand that, don't worry, neither did I really. What I'm saying is that intel uses a far superior architecture and the X6's don't really help much in gaming anyhow. In fact, the i3 2100 beats the X6 in gaming, not multithreaded tasks, but gaming by far.

What about Quad cores? would you say they provide any innate advantages over the duel cores? to be honest...i really want more than 2 cores :sleep.gif:, especially if im gonna be laying down as much cash for a CPU as im planning on/ willing to.

A quad core. Nothing more, nothing less.
In about 5-7 years time, we'll have slowly gotten games that utilize 6 cores fully.
Because think like this, we still have consoles, and because of their limited hardware, developers have to make it equal across all platforms to save time and money etc.

The i5 2500k is a quad core :/ and will out pre form a amd 6 core in gaming the 6 core is really meant for editing. The i5 is one if the top 5 CPU's out there right NOW.

oh ok, very helpfull.
What about overclocking? ive always been kind of wary about it in fear of shortening my CPU lifespan dramatically. do you think it is worth it? If so what should i look for in a CPU if i intend to do some serious overclocking?

And to overclock a Sandy Bridge, you just make one click, basically, and you are done.

The i5 2500k and the i7 2500k are both really great for overclocking even on the stock cooler. I have my i5 up to 3.8GHz on the stock cooler and i could even go up to 4.0GHz but i will wait for BF3 to do that. You could overclock from the bios but if you dont want to take a chance then i would use the gigabyte easytune6.

Heres another question that has always puzzled me, What the hell is that little memory cache for on a CPU? and how important is it???
The little memory cache holds data to be used by the CPU. It is important, but too hard for the average person to comprehend fully. The best way to know if a CPU is good or not is through various benchmarks.

Exactly what i was going to say!! maybe not

Thinking about coming a mod to simply not moderate.

Can you say beastly?
Then you add a copy of Windows 7 to your shopping cart with the rest and your set for max settings in games! :-)

Rather faulty, the cpu cooler sucks, and sabertooth aint meant for gaming

... Shame on you.
xD i am getting the Hyper 212 when i get my second screen :smile.gif: Then i am going up to like 4.2GHz :DD

Weak. Try 4.6.
