Hey everyone, i have been researching for the past few weeks, tweaking, adding and removing parts until i came to the decision that this build is perfect for the price. the build should last me a long time (meaning it will perform well in the years to come, unless they make a game 20 times more demanding than crysis in 2 years...) and i think the money spent is well worth it
yes, i am building it myself as it seems like a piece of cake, no?
Id love to spend 85 bucks (with a coupon) on OEM W7 premium and spend 60 to upgrade to pro but i want to know is OEM "genuine" windows? does it install like regular windows? or should i just buy retail W7 and buy the any time upgrade to pro which would still be cheaper than retail pro.
HX series is better. The 6950 is more than enough, so that card is fine, but get a 1GB version unless you plan to do a multi-monitor setup. OEM is enough for everyone. Its the same windows we all know. Switch to the Samsung F3 spinpoint 1TB. Though SATA III is faster, Mechanical HDD's can only run at 1.5GB/S anyhow. What about the case? The CPU Cooler?
woops, case is a rosewill CHALLENGER case, it looks nice, has a decent amount of room and airflow and is only 50 bucks. CPU cooler is stock, im not OCing at the moment, tho i might considering the ASrock mobo has this feature that automatically OC it for you from 4 ghz to 4.8 ghz
edit: whats wrong with the hitachi?
edit 2: oh and im going to be running this on a 1080p, 32", 1920x1024 tv soo

A better case on this budget would be the CM HAF912, it is a whole lot better and I doubt the rosewill will even be able to fit the 6950. Don't use the auto overclock feature, do it manually.
Why do you need 1.5 TB? 1TB is more than enough and the Samsung is on sale.

actually the haf 912 and rosewill are about the same size and the rosewill has blue fans, i like blue fans :wink.gif: but i am strongly considering the haf912. tell me, if i use the haf 912 do i need to use screws to install meh HDD and optical drives or do they click into place? if i need screws the case comes with em right?
also, i can buy 64 bit SP1 W7 ultimate OEM for 5 bucks less than retail W7 premium. the only difference is OEM is tied to the Mobo and no free tech support right? otherwise it installs like regular windows and i dont need that OPK thing?
and i suppose i could go with the F3 but doesnt 32MB of extra cache make a difference or is it not a very noticeable one?

The HAF 912 is tool less. The rosewill may be the same size, but it doesn't have the same cooling capabilities or video card size, or even cable management.
Pretty much, and retail is also tied to the motherboard.

Hardly noticable.
but the rosewill haz 2x120mm fans and one 140mm fan...how can that be beat by 2x120mm fans? and from the pictures ive seen of the haf 912 its not tooless
edit: wait, just to clarify, i can install OEM like retail W7 without needing anything else?

The HAF 912 is tool less for sure and the positioning of the fans are much better than on the rosewill. Watch this.
im not gonna lie, that video sold me on the case. however, it will run me 25 bucks more due to the challenger being 25 bucks cheaper in my combo deal with an i5, but thats not a biggy. now in that video in the end there where some bracket thingies in a rubber band, do i screw those onto my hdd and then slide the hdd with those brackets into the hdd slots? and if i bought a 120mm blue fan (or 2) where would you recommend putting them and would they be intake or exhaust fans?

I am pretty sure it's just clip on and slide, but I have a different tool less system with my HAF 922, so I can't be 100% sure. As for the fans, my recommendation is front(intake) or back and top(exhaust)
I have the HAF 912 :wink.gif: . You just pop the HDD brackets onto the side of it and slide it in. As for the fans, the HAF comes with one intake and one outtake. What I would do would be to buy the two blue fans and remove the already installed intake and replace it with one and add the other on top of it. The the default fan you took off would be screwed to the top vent for another outtake. I hope you understand my wording :tongue.gif:

so the haf 912 has a front fan (intake) and a back fan (exhaust). so your saying to get 2 blue fans and replace the stock intake fan with a blue one, place a second blue fan directly on top of the other blue fan since the haf 912 has 2x120mm fan slots on the front and place the stock one i took off on the top for exhaust?
Yes. That is exactly what I mean :smile.gif: I have the same thing without the blue LEDs.

i cant decided between the i5 or i7 (2500k and 2600k respectively). the speed isnt the factor but i will be starting (hopefully to begin the journey into modding and will be hosting a server AND playing minecraft and will probably do a lets play which will involve some minor video editing. should i stick with the i5 or go i7?
also, how much of a difference is there between a 6870 and a 6950?

Look up benchmarks, its the best way to see the difference.
well most decent 1GB versions are the same price as this 2GB version so...and i will be playing on a 32" 1080p HDTV so idk if i will need that. also, for gaming would they run better with an OCed CPU or is overclocking not entirely necessarily needed?
even on it's default clocks i5 2500k is damn good cpu. Of course overclocking has somekind of effect. Most likely in first person shooter games you won't notice big difference since their fps usually highly depends about gpu, but in games that require lot of cpu power (strategy games is a good example) you will.
and inches don't matter at all, resolution does :wink.gif: In 1920x1080 (that is 1080p) resolution you wouldn't notice more than 1-4 fps difference between the 1Gb and 2Gb models. You would need to have higher resolution to notice any improvement really.
About the price, cheapest 6950 1Gb is 245$, chepest 2Gb is 260$. The prices of 2Gb model have came down pretty quickly, before there were over 50$ gap between them :smile.gif:
at this point, 15 bucks doesnt matter to me at all...but does HIS make good graphics cards or should i get a different brand?
and i switched the asus drive to a lite on drive for watever reason.
Can you link it? The cheapest versions are usually reference cards. You know, those that look like box :smile.gif: ?
They are all pretty much the same, so if you buy a reference card the manufacturer don't really matter.
If you're talking about some of their own design cards, the IceQ's are pretty good.
nah, the price is too high for me, im still trying to keep costs down.
on the topic of wireless networking...anyone know a good adapter for me? USB or otherwise?
and what is the point of having 1000Mbps internet speed if most ISP's provide 150Mbps MAX
yes, i am building it myself as it seems like a piece of cake, no?
anyways, here is my build as it stands:
i5-2500k ('nuff said)
G.Skills ddr3 1600 (8GB)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200RPM 32MB cache
asrock extreme4 P67 mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157229
plain 'ol LITE-ON optical drive, standard issue
corsair hx650w psu (is the hx brand reliable, ive heard the tx series might be better?)
this video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150527
case: HAF 912
Now my main question is on the OS.

Thinking about coming a mod to simply not moderate.

if it matters (which i dont think it does?) i have a linksys router with some random serial number thingy. if its that important ill find it out.
