Ok, I know this is a topic that has come up in the past, but I could not find any recent threads and so much can change in such an active community. This question might also show just how little I understand about things work so this might be completely off.
Anyway, disclaimer aside... is there currently any mechanism for setting up a server that can either enforce which mods are installed, or do the heavy lifting for the client so people connecting to the server do not need to go searching themselves.
So far I have only played with Tekkit, which takes care of this problem for you, but only if you are using tekkit's specific mods (which would not include Forestry, which I would like to have). I saw some mention of Spout and how it might someday be able to do this, but could not find any solid follow up.
So is this a problem that has been solved since the last mentions I could locate? Or is the best current option doing something like branching the tekkit launcher and sticking to mods that the authors do not mind them being downloaded from elsewhere?
In the same way that technic pack is distributing the mods illegally, this would also be illegal. Branching Technic launcher would be hard. But I dont know of anything that automatically downloads the mods & configs from a server, but it bay be something I try to start working on.
That is a pitty. After seeing the new version of MultiMC and its configpack ability I started hoping that a system was already up and running that streamlined/automated the SMP version of that.
But dont do this the Technic way, ask the modders first!
Oddly enough, this is what keeps giving me pause regarding getting into modding. Perhaps I am a bit too used to the OSS community, but the seeming wide spread 'you are free to use my mod, but you must download it directly from me' feels very off to me.. and seems to be a major impediment to easy access to modded servers.... but that gets into a whole differnt thread
