To install a texture pack, I opened minecraft.jar with "Archive Utility" on an iMac. It expanded it into a folder, so I added the right files into the correct locations, but now I don't know how to convert it back into a jarfile! Help, please?
Right click the folder and select compress. This will create a zip of the folder. Change the extension of the zip to .jap, so if it used to be minecraft.zip, change it to minecraft.jar. This is all. There are easier ways to install texture packs on mac, by the way. Just put the texture packs contents in the same folder as minecraft. (there are tutorials for this online)
1. I opened minecraft, and it kept saying "loading done" while never opening...
2. That doesn't work for me either... :/
make sure you are editing the minecraft.jar located in your .minecraft folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\Twilight\Application Data\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar\
right click the file select "open archive" it should open the file in different window.
Delete the meta-inf folder
Copy the textures into the jar file
close the window "DONE"
First, you should use a mod manager like Minecrafter. It's been released cross-platform, does all this for you and is super easy to use. Just visit their site linked in the topic and click 'Mac Tutorial'.
Second, assuming you really must open and re-compress your *.jar file, the reason you are getting the loading screen is because the way you compressed your folder, the file structure is not correct, and so the minecraft Launcher application cannot find any of its files.
Selecting the Folder and compressing it will not work. That is because doing so creates an extra folder in the root of the *.jar file.
Here is the folder structure after just zipping the folder:
(screenshot via jaree)
As you can see there is a root folder in the archive called 'minecraft' which was the folder that was zipped.
Here is the original, un-modified file:
The files here are not in a folder.
(The difference in file count is due to invisible files the mac OS creates in a folder, that can be ignored))
Therefore what you need to do, when you want to re-zip it is:
1. Open the folder.
2. Do command+a to select all the files inside.
3. Right click and choose 'compress ... items'.
4. The resulting zip file will be called "Archive.zip" and will still be inside the folder.
5. Move 'Archive.zip' out of the folder to where the original *.jar file was.
6. Rename it properly.
Nevermind! I must have done something wrong the first time, 'cause when I tried it again, it worked. (I put the texture pack into the minecraft folder)

Just so you know... That was a typo. You need to change the extension to ".jar" and NOT ".jap". Just making sure you got that. That should work... If not, is there any way for you to open the minecraft.jar (ie. NOT extracting it; just viewing the contents)? If so, you can open a fresh, unaltered minecraft.jar and "insert" the custom textures.
Yes, I renamed it to minecraft.jar.
I'll try the mod edit thing. :smile.gif:
