I was sorely disappointed to find that the better together update for minecraft was a complete lie... Booted up my realms and tried to add my brother-in-law to the server when the update hit, but come to find out I would be required to purchase a windows 10 only realms server in order for him to connect with his xbox 1, which doesn't work for me because I don't have a windows 10 computer and for some reason that means I can't connect to a windows 10 enabled realms server. (makes no sense to me why I can't connect to a windows 10 enabled realm with a "Windows PC" but that's how it is)
It seems to me like microsoft is just trying to keep things separate while claiming that it's "together" when in reality it is not.
What we need is a "better together" update that actually does what it states in the title: makes minecraft better together by giving multiple platforms the ability to connect to any server that is currently available.

Wait, hang on a second. If I'm reading this correctly, you're saying you've booted up a Java version of Realms, and aren't able to have an Xbox 1 connect to it? There's the problem.
The Better Together Update only applied for non-PC/Java platforms. PC was exempt from the BT update for a few reasons. IIRC, W10 edition comes free to those who already have the PC version, so unless you're running on something else such as OSX or Linux, you should be alright. W10 edition though is... clunky and somewhat undesirable. But, if you wish to play with your bro, that's looking like your best path.

and that's exactly what better together does. I can play on my xbox with friends on pc win10 and mcpe. If you're playing java edition then you cant play cross platform, it's a different game entirely. I thought this was fairly well understood now?

The reason The Better Together update was made possible between PC and Xbox One was due to Windows 10. The Xbox One's OS runs on Windows 10, thus enabling both the Windows 10 version and the Xbox One version to play well together.
It's technically part of a bigger play by Microsoft to unify their platform so that Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One consoles are nearly indistinguishable, feature and content wise.
True but why not work on an engine or something that companies could collaborate on to incorporate all aspects of the digital world on common server meeting points?
There's no reason why microsoft couldn't work on a way to get the java edition to work with win10 and xbox one considering win10 can still run java.

Pocket edition can't run it well, and that's their best selling platform. Therefore, no Java. Why not just get Windows 10 edition?

The original suggestion (that Minecraft: The Original (sometimes called Java edition) and other editions be interplayable) is a good one.
And, yes, the BTU was actually the Better Together Without the Java Players (& a few others ), but easily seen just a typical example of marketing hype… however irritating.
Putting aside the deisres and tactics of the Win10 launch and Win10's creators: there are technical hurdles to acheiving this;
the coding languages differ; this is not insurmountable, but significantly increases the cost
the Minecraft user interface was designed for keyboard plus mouse, many other platforms use an adaptation that could (in some circumstances) put those players at a disadvantage (entering text being an obvious example)
the in-game functionality would need to be the same across platforms (cf the response to the recent proposal to nerf sheild use to accommodate the more limited interface of some game controllers)

RE: Eager8 "Why not just get Windows 10 edition?"
Because this would require running Windows 10.
The debate on whether to "upgrade" to Win10 has been long and divisive [feel free to search out the various sides as you like], but — suffice to say — there are a large number of people who strenuously resisted/resist attempts to "encourage" the change…
…as well as those who moved to one of the UNIX descendants in preference (which is where I'll probably go with my next 'game' box when my current XP machine proves insufficient).

The bedrock codebase (Better Together) is Xbox One, Pocket, Fire OS, Fire TV, Apple TV and Windows 10 editions. These are cross compatible, while legacy console and java edtitions are clearly not. That was your fault.
But cross-compability between Java and Bedrock versions would be awesome!

If you could SOMEHOW(you're never gonna cuz the microsofts doesn't want to lose the muneys) get the source code for Minecraft Win 10 or PE you could send it to Mojang to show them. Also compiling it wil be REALLY hard because Mac SORT OF supports C++. Also if you were able to, don't give it publicly or you could get sued.
There's a big discussion about this over on Reddit. Turns out you're not the only one! I'm a mac user as well, and prefer to keep my 3,000$ computer instead of getting Window's crappy OS (everybody says that 'you should get pc instead of mac' but I have had 3 PCs and 1 Mac and all 3 PCs have been absolute garbage compared to my Mac) I would like to play with my friends on my Macintosh.
From what I've gathered? They're working on it.
Which is great! Yay!
I'm not entirely sure so you'll have to check for yourself but I think this is what's going on! The developers over at Mojang don't want to just unify Windows platforms, but ALL platforms. They ditched Java because it was buggy and native to computers. Their own "Bedrock" system shouldn't be.
So, for now, your best bet is to get Minecraft: Pocket Edition to play with your friends, or just wait it out. You could probably run some kind of emulator, if you REALLY want to play it on desktop right now.

Figured it was time for a change.

I was annoyed that the update didn't apply to the Wii U edition, which means I still can't play Minecraft on it with more than two players
