Hi, I just wanted to know everyone's opinion on the bedrock dual wielding. I personally think they should add more options instead of just maps and shields to dual wield with.
I've thought daggers would be an interesting new weapon to add for the dual wield function, I agree with you and it's evident I'm not the only one who wanted this.
Before the combat, aquatic and pillager updates the weapon system was bland, seriously boring. You only had 2 weapons to choose from, 3 if you count potions. I wouldn't consider something like flint and steel and regular tools weapons, because their primary use isn't to kill mobs, their use was specifically intended for other things. You could argue that TNT and firechargers are weapons, but I'm talking about conventional ones that have a specific use.
Now we have the ability to hold shields which can be used to block Creeper explosions and projectiles, and wield tridents or crossbows it's a good start, but more needs to be done with the dual wielding weapon system.
Daggers could serve as the only craftable weapon that allows you to put Loyalty enchantment on them, so the daggers would return to the player after being thrown, but be cheaper to craft than swords albeit doing less damage than the sword unless dual wielded and used for stabbing, then their damage output being equal to the sword would make sense and would be balanced.
Keep in mind that Bedrock is also for mobile devices. I'm not sure how feasible the combat system from Java would be implemented into a touch screen control system.

But people wouldn't be forced into crafting the daggers or using the dual wielding combat system on mobile devices, that's the point. There is no mechanic currently in the game that requires this, other than anything related to shields such as blocking Shulker projectiles.
Also, wireless keyboards and mice exist, so if they are compatible with android Minecraft then that's kinda a moot point.
Most people would rather the game progress and have more features added, not go backwards.

Do you remember the Better Together update? A key feature of Bedrock is that it's basically the same on each platform/device it's being played on. I rather enjoy being able to hop on my tablet/phone and get some things done in my world while I'm away from home. It would be weird to add features to the game that require mobile users to purchase accessories to use them.
On a side note, I do use a bluetooth controller for my phone (it has a nice holder for the phone) and my tablet (no holder lol). I'm prejudice against the combat system on Java, never liked it. It's the main reason I migrated to Bedrock. However the dual wielding aspect is nice.

I don't see how the dual wielding system would be detrimental to the mobile platform though.
I mean, bluetooth game controllers are already usable on android, I'm not sure about iphones, but I know they do exist for Android.
It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect players to purchase one accessory to avoid being forced to use and be restricted by a touch screen.
smartphones are already cheaper than gaming laptops as they are, they were kinda revolutionary in providing people powerful yet pocket sized easy to carry and affordable computers.
I could see why people are annoyed about having to purchase the Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch due to the drift issues with the Joycons
But smartphones do not have joysticks or action buttons.
and many video games were designed with gamepads in mind, not touch screens.
And Minecraft originally started out on PC.
Like it or not, the majority of the platforms bedrock edition is on do in fact have a keyboard and mouse setup or game controller requirement.
Things change, it's no longer the pocket edition, it is bedrock edition.
Try using touch screen controls and you'll figure out how detrimental it would be.
as I said in an already non edited post previously,
on android it is possible to use wireless peripherals that bypass the need for using the touch screen, which if compatible, will let you play Minecraft bedrock edition as if it were on a console like the Nintendo Switch.
So you've got choices, at least you do on android phones like Samsung Galaxy, Blackberry or Sony Xperia.
iphones may be more restricted here, but blame Apple for this, they have tighter controls on what hardware can be used with their systems.
I believe the game is designed for the platforms and their default configurations. How would you feel if they changed everything to VR and made you buy accessories?

Not comparable, because if you're going to use nostalgia to justify a claim, then this would be like saying we should force everyone to use a mouse and keyboard just to play Minecraft, as this would be the logical conclusion that would follow.
That I don't agree with, and I think people should have options, this is what bedrock edition allowed for, but there are caveats due to the limits of what touch screens can do, this cannot be helped. It really I could only see myself using the touch screen feature for managing the inventory system or playing on creative, I wouldn't use it for combat because the game wasn't designed for it and this should be obvious to anyone who understands the history of the game or the basics of how it works.
There's a very good reason why game consoles have buttons with joysticks on their gamepads, and not touch screens for games like this or any game in general. You won't get the same responsiveness and level of control on a touch screen as you would with them.
Touch screens would be okay for some light casual game or game that doesn't require quick reactions,
but it is not hidden information that they suck at everything else, if touch screens were suitable for serious gaming the Nintendo Switch wouldn't have joycons now would it? Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft know full well what technology is best for gaming and what isn't.
If nostalgia is key, just force everyone to use the Java edition. I'm not talking about nostalgia though.
The Bedrock Engine came from the Pocket Edition, which was released before any legacy console editions. It's also very popular, still the top paid (not free) app in the Google Play store in most countries. Adding a significant feature that isn't available on the mobile devices would be unusual to say the least. But then again, only three platforms have the Render Dragon engine that supports ray tracing, so maybe the mobile aspect of the game will be set aside.
Back to the 'root' though, using the shield on touch screen is harder than using it on the console, which is harder than using it on the PC. Have you ever used the touch screen mobile controls?

Yes, but with Minecraft I do the wise option and just use a different platform, because touch screens aren't exactly useful for Minecraft survival gameplay. Bedrock edition was designed for crossplay on PC and consoles, not just smartphones and the game started out on PC on Java version. If you have a problem with touch screens then you have options, purchase a game controller that works with android, or move onto a different platform. Touch screens are not and never will be ideal for gaming. I'm not a huge fan of touch screen controls either, but I don't sit here complaining about them because I already figured out a solution to the problem, it's not that hard.

I literally just told you that the Bedrock Engine started out on Pocket Edition, that's where it came from. It was doing so well they went with the Better Together update, which moved that codebase to consoles. The Legacy Console editions didn't just get an update that enabled cross-play, they essentially got an entirely re-written version of Minecraft. The Windows 10 version was already cross-playing with Pocket Edition before that. I received the Win10 version for free when it was in beta, since I'd already owned the Java Edition. I mostly play on my Win10 desktop, or my android tablet, and sometimes my PS4. Playing in survival on a touch screen isn't hard. I'm actually much quicker with the bow/crossbow on that setup than I am on the PS4.
Science disagrees with you, and that touch screens are objectively bad for gaming because of the inherent limits in their design. That's why game controllers exist, also I disagree with you too, I find myself being much more precise with actions in Minecraft with a gamepad with joysticks and buttons than I do with a touch screen, sometimes touch screens like on my old android phone do not even register my actions correctly, I would rather not use them if it can be helped, plus as the article states here, you don't get the same tactile feedback with a touch screen as you would with a button.
That's why touch screens never will replace game controllers,
not if they continue to cause a delay between press and action and also be more prone to error.
"...lacking when it comes to reflex-intensive games that require precise timing."
I would hardly classify Minecraft as reflex-intensive and requiring a lot of precise timing. 😂 Besides, that research is regarding temporal pointing, Minecraft is more spatial pointing.
I find it incredibly annoying how Bedrock misses out on so many features because they can't be bothered to implement them for Mobile users. I don't understand why you can't allow people to hold blocks and tools together. If I have dirt in one hand and a pickaxe in the other, I should just be able to tap to place dirt, and hold to use the pick. Same goes for other tools. This is the main purpose for Java anyway.

You forgot totems, fireworks, arrows, and nautilus shells.
