Hello there. Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place but desperately trying to help my 8 year old son who has lost his world in Minecraft and is devastated. Unfortunately he does not have the original coordinates and whilst in the process of trying to kill himself in order to respawn back in his original home, he accidentally reset the respawn location to his current location. Is there anything that he or anyone can do? Thank you so much in advance.
He did not lose his world, from what you've been saying, he just doesn't remember where his stuff is. This is a good learning experience for him to make notes somewhere on where his home coordinates are and/or to make a safe bed setup.
As for finding his home, do you know if he has found the end fortress in the overworld or explored much of the nether yet? If he has, maybe he could start from scratch up to the point where he can get into the nether and find his home portal there, since the nether is a much smaller area to cover while looking for landmarks. If that fails and he has found the end fortress once already, he could try making at least one eye of ender and throwing it repeatedly to navigate back to the fortress, at which point he will hopefully remember where he is and know his way back home.
Hi Dapper Dinosaur!! Thank you so much for your help. He went into the Nether for the first time last night and then got lost so has only ever been here once and briefly and has definitely not found the end fortress. He had only really been using it to build wonderful structures and houses.
Would you recommend he investigate the Nether as a first point?
To get back into the nether, he would need to build another nether portal just to get back in there, which would mean either obtaining enough iron to make buckets and create another portal one block at a time by making water touch lava for obsidian in the correct places, or get another diamond pickaxe and collect the obsidian again from a natural source.
At this point, your fastest option to get him back to his stuff is to create a copy of the world, load it in creative mode, and use creative mode to create a new portal, enter the nether, and look for the old portal using flight.
By making a copy of the world before you load it in creative, you can keep the survivial one intact once you can get the coordinates from the creative copy.
Write down your coordinates so you know where you are now. Does he remember anything about which direction he was traveling when he got lost? Remember any landmarks?
Switch to creative mode and fly around looking for base (just have your current coordinates so you don't get more lost).

Walkman, all you just did is give a worse version of the same advice I did.
