So I used to play Minecraft on java version but switched to windows 10 edition due to better optimization in this version. In java you can put say your pickaxe in your off hand and go to a mob farm and repair it that way. With the limit of only arrows, map, and totem being able to go in your off hand how do people repair things that get low in durability using mending? Kill mobs with the pick?
For example, you want to mend your pick axe, then every time you absorb experience you should hold it in your hand (and make sure don’t wear armour that has got mending on it, if not it will mend the armour instead)

I'm aware about how mending works in general, as i stated I used it a lot in java version. The question remains on how to hold it and get xp since mining doesn't provide enough, especially when you use a silk touch (pick) to save on room while mining. Was hoping someone with more pocket edition/windows 10 edition experience had figured out a work around for the no off hand problem.

If you're getting xp from killing mobs you'll need to do it from a distance so that you can switch to the pick axe before collecting the xp. Basically I don't think you'll be able to use a sword to get the xp. I haven't gotten mending yet on this new version but on Console Edition I would just run around at night with my bow killing any hostile I came across and then switch to whatever tool I needed to mend as I got close to the xp orbs.
For a mob farm you might have to stand back a bit and use splash potions to kill the mobs and then quickly switch to the pick.
1. Get an xp farm (modify a spawner or build a pit in the End) and use the tool to one-hit the weakened mobs
2. Have the tool in hand when trading with villagers (best if you have a breeder and trading hall)
I have a skeleton xp farm so I like to stand back and fire 20 - 25 arrows into the group, then switch to the tool and step forward to collect all the do at once

Thanks, great ideas. I wasn't aware trading with villagers awarded xp as on java version villagers always despawned for some reason so I rarely traded with them.
I have a diamond pick with mending on it, and from mining coal/redstone/lapis/nether crystal it has never dropped anywhere below 75% durability. Also, I have fortune three on it, meaning I have a plethora of coal and redstone that I'll likely never use.
I didn't think of the 'one hit' technique on my zombie grinder, that'll save me some storage space.
If your armor has mending on it, does it randomly absorb xp to repair it?

Two methods that work:

I find that it makes no difference whether you hold it or not, the xp just seems to randomly assign to either the tool or my xp level
