Seriously, I have been playing Minecraft for years but with the new 1.2 update, I literally cannot build a furnace anymore. I have stacks of Cobblestone, Diorite and Granite and it will not let me build a furnace. If I hover over the components, it just lists it as "stone". I've tried polishing Diorite & Granite and also tried crafting them into Stone Bricks. Nothing I do is recognized as a component to making a furnace. I also tried searching and none of the Wikis say anything about the ingredients changing in 1.2. I have PLENTY of cobblestone (multiple stacks) and it is not working for making a furnace. The furnace recipe is in red. I can't even manually build it using 8 cobblestone (or any other stone).
They also changed the recipes for stone tools - only certain types of stone work now (cobblestone no longer works). None of the wikis mention that yet either.
This is on both Windows 10 and Xbox One using the new 1.2 update that came out a few days ago.
I FINALLY found this problem. This is a known bug since July (!!!). It happens when you first join a Lifeboat server session. It can only be fixed by quitting/restarting Minecraft.
I'm having this problem in a brand new game, 1.2.1. I tried it in Windows 10 edition and it seems that the furnace is now 8x STONE not cobblestone. This must be a mistake, cant make stone without a furnace.. quite the conundrum lol.
I have no problem making a Furnace. (No, I didn't join a server). If you made a Crafting Table, you can make a Furnace.
* Put blocks of Cobblestone all around the edges when you pull up the Crafting Table (leave the center square empty).
* OR pull up the Crafting Table, find the Furnace on the left, click on it, and, if you have the proper ingredients, one is made for you. If it doesn't, check the red squares- it will tell you what you're missing or not right.

Ugh. If this is a defect then it is totally game breaking. Really gimps the game since I cannot create a furnace to cook food or smelt iron.

Do you have any idea why Minecraft 1.2 version doesn't allow you to make furnace with cobblestone? Is this a known glitch ? How do you get around it?
Must you be certain level?
