Since the Xbox 360 update (TU14) local multiplayer is no longer working for me. The message I get is that the profile doesn't have a gold membership.
For the record:
1) I do have a gold account
2) I'm only playing local multiplayer (split screen)
3) I never needed two profiles with gold before the update
I'm hoping this is just a bug and will get fixed because I specifically bought the 360 version of MineCraft so my sons could play together easily. Unfortunately, this is exactly the type of money grubbing policy I can see Microsoft trying to pull off, so I'm a bit suspicious.
Please let me know if anyone else experiences this issue because so far it seems like I'm alone (based on internet searches).
To respond to my own post - I have a work around. You have to log-in as Guest when setting up the split screen game. It seems to only work when you first start the game (so if you have a game already open in single player, you can't just add a second player). Furthermore, if you created local profile, which I had for both my sons, they will not work.
Please let me know if any one else has the same behavior.
I have the same issue. I would play with my sisters before the update, and now it will now let but one player play at one time. Although, I don't get a gold message. It just will not let local (offline) splitscreen work.
Offline splitscreen multiplayer is working just fine without a Gold membership. I was playing splitscreen just yesterday with two local only (i.e. not Live) profiles with no problems at all.
Make absolutely certain that the "online game" optiion is unchecked (i.e. save and exit the world with the option unchecked and then launch the world again with the option still unchecked).
IF the online game is checked, only Gold memberships or their associated Guest temporarily profiles will be able to join the game. This is as it should be since Microsoft does not grant online access to Silver Live membership profiles and local non-Live profiles (clearly stated on their website regarding membership benefits).
I have an odd split screen problem. My nephew created a game, and he is silver membership. I joined him and I have gold membership. Had no problem first day we played. Second day, we did the same thing, however, when I joined I found I could not move and my name that is usually up on the split screen (not the gamertag) wasn't visible and I cannot get it to reappear. I found my controller had defaulted and I had to reset all settings especially the sensitivity. My skin was back to a Steve skin and when I went to change my skin to one of my favorites, all I had was creeper skins in it. We signed out of the game, and I went into one of my worlds and although the controller settings were fine, the skin favorites was all creeper skins. I changed my skin and saved it to favorites, but odd things have been happening on his world. Tamed wolves that were spawned in, sat in a building and dyed with different colors, all vanished in a 5 minute period. And other odd weird things have been disappearing in chests. My profile seems fine on all other games...just in Minecraft it seems to be disrupted.

There have been issues with the settings (such as sensitivities) resetting themselves to 0 since the game was first released. They do seem to get a little more extensive with each update (that is, it used to just be the sensitivities, then it spread to other settings... and I guess that now it has spread to the online game settings. As I recall, 4J did say some time ago that they really had no fix for this issue, even though it is, I'll admit, an annoying one.

This has been going on since TU12 and they have not been able to fix it yet. Very often one of the additional players joining a game have to reset all controls so they can move and see the HUD.
We are having the same issue with split screen. My son used to play splitscreen all the time and he said after he did update it doesn't work. I read online somewhere that settings in dashboard need to be set to video 1080pi. We did that and no change. I cleared the cache..something else I read. What else should I try?
I also looked to see if somehow HD was switched off on TV but I don't see any kind of button.

It may be that this is a slightly different iteration of the infamous "reset" bug - where, upon updating, the game arbitrarily changes some settings. First off, enter the game separately using each profile that you want to play splitscreen with and do a reset to defaults. (Help & Options - Settings - Reset to Defaults). Then try splitscreen again.
This thread dates back to August and there have been updates since then. I never did hear back from anyone to suggest that the "reset to defaults" suggestion worked for this issue, so I'm assuming it didn't. If you are saying that it worked for you, then please post something clearer about it. I'd love to know.
Can someone help me ever since I got the update for minecraft I cannot play minecraft multiplayer anymore I'm logging on to my friends account as she has a gold membership and I'm signing on as a guest but it's not working any suggestions ?
1) Whether or not you'll be able to sign into a friend's online world (i.e. not your own world) using a "guest" profile depends on the settings the host of that game has used (ie. "invite only" or "friend's of friends" or neither of these two). For their world, you cannot check. They would have to check themselves and tell you what settings they have.
2) For your own world (i.e. one you are hosting), the "owner/creator of that world would have to be the player signed in with the Gold membership to be able to put that world online. When you load the world, you would check under the "More Options" button on the load menu. The top option is "Online Game," which should be checked if you have a Gold membership and want to play with others outside your home (i.e. not playing with you in local splitscreen on your console). You can also optionally check "Invite Only" and/or "Allow friends of friends."
3) If you want to just play in local splitscreen mode with someone in your household who does not have a Gold membership and, therefore, can't play online, you should just uncheck the "online game."
4) If you want to play with someone in your household who does not have a Gold membership AND you also want to play with someone online in your own world (and you have a Gold membership), load the world as an online game and then sign the other people in your household in as Guests (since they still cannot play online using an offline (i.e. not Gold) profile of their own). Then, invite or allow the people not in your own household to join - depending on the settings re "invite only", etc. you've selected.
Hey guys newb here. I was trying to play a local splitscreen game with my cousin and couldn't get it to work either. I know this is probably just me but I disconnected my internet from the Xbox and it worked perfectly. For some reason being connected to the Internet wouldn't allow me to play local splitscreen. Hope this helps anybody having problems.

You really shouldn't have to disconnect the Xbox. Just make sure that the "Online Game" box is unchecked. I play splitscreen all the time with local profiles (i.e. not Live enabled) and my Xbox is connected.
I have a similar problem. After downloading the Halo Mashup pack, the game stopped loading in HD (hdmi connected) and multiplayer won't work. All other 360 games work fine in HD. Weird. Tried deleting all game related data and didn't help. Anyone have an idea on this one?

Your not alone. I am having the same exact problems when I try to enter multiplayer on split screen
