How far is one meter in minecraft? I'm trying to beat a mission that requires 500 meters of open space.

Yesterday I was on my way to class, when a black cat fell from the sky. I didn't really know what that nonsense was about so I asked him if I could step around him because he was bad luck, but he simply meowed and then disappeared. I was a bit worried that maybe he'd teleported to Afghanistan or somewhere equally dangerous, but a wizard came and assured me that it was alright. I threw my Zune at him because I was 78% sure he was lying. The wizard roared at me and sentenced my mother to thirty five years of chain smoking. I was sad.
If you're trying to get the On A Rail achievement, you must build the track in a straight line. Just so you know.
Do you mean it's best to do it in a straight line? Because im sure I beat it on a curved track. I don't remember exactly because the profile the world was on got deleted.
You need 500 meters distance along a single direction (X or Z) to get the achievement. It's OK to have some curves on the way, as long as you meet the strict distance requirement (along a single direction).
Wait a sec! Does that mean you could get that achievement by building a circular track on a 3x3 area and then go in a circle 500 times? Because if all that is required is to go 500 meters in a certain direction (e.g. north) and direction changes don't matter as long as you don't get out of the cart, you should get that achievement by going over that one rail that takes you north 500 times. Or am I mistaken here?

Is it a chicken or is it a duck? - It's a chuck, because dicken sounds stupid.
That's not what I said. I thought I was clear. You need to go 500 meters in a *single* direction (X or Z). Your path can curve, but any distance traveled left or right of your goal won't count. Only the distance traveled along a single horizontal axis will count toward the achievement. So, for example, if your trip starts at X = -250, then it must end at X = 250, regardless of how straight or curvy your path is to get there.
Ah, ok. I understand now. I was just thinking that "travel 500 meters in one direction" doesn't explicitly state that I can't travel the same meter 500 times. And before you wonder - yeah, my brain works that way.
Edit: Follow-up question: How about changes in height? Does traveling a ramp up or down count towards that distance or not?
You can even use drops in elevation to help you out if you're short on powered rails. Start out high up, and go down hills. The drops won't impact the achievement one way or the other.
You can get the achievement even if the minecart comes to a complete stop before reaching the end of the run as long as YOU don't get out of the cart.
I was helping my wife get this on splitscreen and one of the powered rails for some reason didn't get powered. Ran down there, stuck a torch next to it and gave her a shove the rest of the way thinking we would have to send her back the other way to get it. She got the achievement soon as she got to the end though.

Did X change by 500 or more during the railway trip?
Yes: Ding! Achievement. Done --->
No:
Did Z change by 500 or more during the railway trip?
