I'm new to Minecraft, having heard a bit about it in the past, but I never did check it out for PC. Then I saw it pop up in my suggestions on my XBox Live home page and I thought I'd check it out. I downloaded the demo version and was hooked immediately. I've got the full version now on my XBox, and I have played it almost 18 hours a day, every day, for about two weeks now, since getting it.
I started out with the Tutorial world, then I went to a superflat world in Creative Mode and built myself my dream house and farm. Then I decided to pursue those XBox Achievements, so I went in search of a "seed" to play in Survival Mode, and came across this GameSpot post listing some of the best seeds for the XBox. I chose the first one, "gargamel", which has proven to be a whole lot of fun, and a great place for me to further my minecraftucation (don't know whether I just coined a new word there, but I mean "Minecraft education", of course).
I'm still playing the gargamel seed, single-player, in Survival Mode on the XBox, and I'm starting to get to grips with how this game works. I'm not yet ready to join a server, but I thought I'd introduce myself here anyway and let people know that I'm here.
The Nether In my current world, I have reached the stage of making a Nether Portal and travelling to the Nether. I've established a safe base there for myself, and have secured the portal at the other end, so I can safely travel from my Overworld base to my Nether base. That was a huge achievement for me, as I'm chronically short on arrows and the Ghast have been the worst foes I have faced yet in the game. My current objective is to find a way into the Nether Fortress so that I can face off against a Blaze and get some Blaze Rods, so that I can craft a Brewing Stand. My base in the Nether is protected by Nether Bricks, and I have started making pathways across the god-forsaken Nether terrain out of those dark bricks too, to protect me from fire caused by Ghast attacks on the surrounding Netherrack. It is slow progress, but I'd rather do it this way, so that I can quickly and easily return to the safety of my base when those fire-breathing airships loom overhead. I still haven't found the entrance to the Nether Fortress, but I can see the great columns that support it. I even tried tunnelling up the inside of one of those columns once, making a spiral staircase inside it. Unfortunately there was a Ghast right above me when I reached the top of it, so I could go no further and had to beat a hasty retreat.
Overworld I took over the village at the original spawning point, and have flattened everything other than the main tower there. I flattened out the land that was once the village, and have started making my own village there, surrounded by a sturdy Stone Brick wall. I have a functioning farm, it's not autmated or anything (I'm still yet to learn those features of the game), but I have reached the stage where I am no longer subsistance-living ... I can plan ahead now to know that I have sufficient food and wood at the very least. My new village has a library, which includes an Enchantment Table surrounded by Bookshelves in the pattern shown on the wiki. It also features a "portal room", in the Stargate fashion.
Future As I learn the skills I need to be successful in this game, I am thinking about the future and the possibility of joining a server and playing online. I assume this would require XBox Gold, like other online games, is that right? I haven't had Xbox Gold since the initial period expired from when I first got my Xbox. I mostly play single-player RPG games like the Elder Scrolls series, Fall Out, and Far Cry (single-player storyline only). Minecraft intrigues me enough to possibly want to venture into MMOG territory. Therefore I'd like to use this forum thread to invite feedback about good servers to join, or for experienced players to point me to links of information they think I'd need to know in order to become a valuable addition on a server. I have the time, and an interest in the game, and I am slowly picking up the skills. Don't expect me to jump into your server straight away though, as I'm still slowly learning about the game and how everything works.
Hi, I'm Augur and I'm from New Zealand (NZ). Just call me "Augur". I'm an older person playing Minecraft Xbox 360 Legacy Console Edition without Xbox Gold (no online gaming, sorry), so please don't hate on the old. 😄
There's a tad bit you need to know about servers. Servers work differently in MC360. They can hold up to eight people, the host must be online for others to join, and the only people that can join must be on the host's friends list.
From what I've read in your post, I think you have the idea that there are 24/7 servers in MC360, which there are not (The Minecraft version on the Xbox One will have features that our version does not, and 24/7 servers may be included in these exclusive features).
But welcome to our ever-growing community! There's much to learn about Minecraft, be it user-created or in-game based facts.
How do you have 18 hours a day to play Minecraft? That means you sleep for like 6, and play Minecraft the entire rest of the day. If you're a kid on summer break than I can understand a bit, but you should probably go out and do other things with your life and play the maybe 3 or 4 hours that the poster above suggested. That's just too much time spent not actually doing anything at all. If you're 18 or older and out of high school, go get a job. I'm not knocking playing video games, but there's so much more to do than play them all day everyday. Girls, money, play sports, work out, etc. Minecraft doesn't exactly push you forward to any of your real goals in life. And trust me, you're going to get burned out quick on the game at this rate.

From the looks of his post, the guy seems pretty intelligent. You never know, he could have a future in game developing, literature, designing, etc. Plus I think the 18 hours a day thing might have been a slight exaggeration.

No offense but you really don't have any right to tell someone how to spend their free time.
I'm sort of in the same boat; although I have played Minecraft for as long as it has been on the xbox, I rarely play multiplayer on any game. I would like to, but there are a number of things that currently prevent me from doing so. How do I go about looking for a good server? Do I even want to join a server, or simply find people to play with every now and then? Will it interrupt the rest of my life?
I'm not looking for any answers, I just want you to know that there are others who are similarly hesitant.
Time spent playing games Yeah, 18 hours was probably a little exaggeration, more like 12 hours per day. I'm a sickness beneficiary and stuck at home all day, so "go out and get a job" doesn't really apply right now, but I appreciate the sentiment. Oh, and RayNarvaezJr, my stellar progress in the game so far is due to the amount of time I'm spending playing it.
MMOG Servers Thanks for the information about the servers, xplodingporkchopz, I really was a bit confused about that. Now that there is so much information on the Minecraft Wiki about the MX360 edition, it would be great if they would highlight the stuff that is particularly relevant to MX360 on each page. I've spent a lot of time recently on the Elder Scrolls wiki, and they have these little icons on each page that indicate info specific to each console, or for PC-only information. I might suggest that on the wiki at some time.
Map Zooming Speaking of which, I'm currently trying to work out how to use the map. According to the Minecraft Wiki, I can make different maps at different zoom levels. Is that also possible with the MX360 edition? I haven't seen the option to do so anywhere in my Crafting Table. I have a map and I have spare paper. My map is not complete yet, is that why I can't copy it or extend it?
My Latest In-Game Update I have just started a new Creative Mode world using the same seed (gargamel) as I am using for my Survival Mode world, and I want to be able to use the Creative Mode world to help me in the Survival Mode, by knowing where things are, hence the mapping.
My previous goal in the game has now been achieved. I have killed a Blaze and made a Brewing Stand, and can now craft potions. The fight with the Blazes at the Nether Fortress was fairly pedestrian, but the journey back to my Nether base and the Portal was epic! It took me ages to find my way back, without aid of a compass or map.
I've started marking out the dungeons in the Overworld, using lime green and red wool. I use one lime green wool on the "safe" side, and one red wool on the "unsafe" of my flashings (trailblazing terminology), so if I follow the lime green ones I can find my way back to my Overworld base easily.
My current goal is to find more diamonds, so that I can craft some armour that is better than the leather armour I'm currently wearing. Iron is in faily short supply at the moment, so I don't like wasting it on armour.
Strange In-Game Occurance I just have to tell you all about something weird that happened in my game the other day. I had tamed a wolf, and left it above-ground near my farm area in my village. At the time, I was below-ground in my secret lair, under my village. A storm was billowing outside, and there was thunder that I could hear even down in my lair. Suddenly, after a huge rumble of thunder, my tame wolf appeared in my underground lair, on fire! He must have been hit by a bolt of lightning and somehow transported to me underground. He survived, and I fed him, and he now lives in my secret lair. Very strange.
By the way, thanks also, xplodingporkchopz, for the compliment about my intelligence. And thanks Drifts115. What you said was very encouraging.

Map zooming is one of those PC only things. The map you start with is all the map there is on the 360. Only other thing you can do is craft one while in the nether so you can have a map of there as well.
The wolf teleporting is a known issue. I couldn't tell you exactly what causes it, perhaps others have narrowed down the why.
Thanks for the replies. I also learned a valuable lesson last night about the nature of these "seeds" and randomization. No two maps using the same "seed" will be exactly the same, so my second instance of the gargamel seed, the one I made yesterday in Creative Mode, will not help me find things in my Survival Mode game. I get that now.

Normally, using the same "seed" will generate an identical world. This changes, however, anytime they have an update that affects the terrain generation code.

Must .... find .... more ... diamonds!
My seed is "gargamel" as well. I generated it back when the game first came out, though (~Beta 1.6). Yes, using the same seed should give you identical worlds, unless there is a title update in between world generations.
Diamonds are down between bedrock and Y=16. Branch mining is the most efficient legitimate way to expose a large volume of blocks. Dig a 1-wide trench at the desired depth range every 3rd row. This leaves walls 2 blocks thick, so you can see every single block in the mined space, while only digging through one third of the blocks.
When it comes to seeds used for world generation, the terrain of two worlds made with the same seeds will be identical while things like trees, animals, etc, will not be the exact same. The blocks that make up the ground however, should be nearly identical.

As others have said, as long as there has not been any updates between the time you first generate a seed and when you generate it again, the resulting worlds should be nearly identical. The terrain basic terrain should be pretty much identical as well as the location of the ores blocks. There does appear to be some variations in where certain chests generate, however. That is, I have personally found chests in Mineshafts in Survival Mode that were not at the same coordinates in Creative Mode, even though the duplicate seeds involved were created on that same day and no updates had occurred between the the two. Sometimes the chests moved only a few blocks, but sometimes they had seemed to completely disappear. Other times, the chests between the two seeds appear in exactly the same places. I'm inclined to think that this is some sort of bug in the game, but I have yet to determine what precisely triggers it in some duplicate seeds and not in others. One thing I sometimes do when I'm checking out seeds is to generate the terrain in the two seeds all originally in survival mode... keeping one in survival and then scoping out the other in creative. This is somewhat time consuming since it does mean ultimately walking around the entire world in survival on two maps rather than just being able to fly over the world.
Welcome to MCXBL.......As everyone else has said, it looks as though you have a solid handle on the game to this point, good job!!
You mentioned having trouble finding your way around in the Nether. If you make a nether map it will help a ton both in general scouting and later on when/if you decide to use portals as fast travel across the overworld. Making them is the same as in the overworld, except you make it while in the Nether...
if you used the same seed and there wasn't a title update, and the worlds don't look pretty much the same, you may have typed it in wrong, or used different casing. For example: "Gargamel" is not the same as "gargamel" to a computer.
the reason the "no updates" part matters is that each update alters the world generation code. So with the same version, the same seed renders the same world. 2 different versions probably won't.

Oh, one final tip for OP regarding the Nether: I do love your idea of building in the Nether using netherbrick, but I would actually recommend cobblestone. It's quick, it's cheap, and as i understand it's got just about as much blast resistance as other brick blocks, but most importantly, it stands out in the nether like a sore thumb. Basically, it is very easy to find and follow your path in the Nether if it's marked or built with cobblestone.
I'm new to Minecraft, having heard a bit about it in the past, but I never did check it out for PC. Then I saw it pop up in my suggestions on my XBox Live home page and I thought I'd check it out. The Nether
In my current world, I have reached the stage of making a Nether Portal and travelling to the Nether.
Overworld
I took over the village at the original spawning point, and have flattened everything other than the main tower there.
