What do you guys think about the ability to make red stone driven mining machines?
Cool suggestion, or a series of programmable robots for various tasks. Did you get this idea from ComputerCraft? They having mining bots and whatnot, cool stuff.
This is related, but I wish you could use Slime Balls to make a paste to stick blocks together. I've briefly looked into flying machines in Minecraft, and one of the biggest limitations is moving all the blocks and powering the thing. If we could use paste to force things like redstone torches to stick, and wool (example, any block would work) so that you only have to move one to move the whole thing.

I think it's a good idea, feel free to criticize.
I used to have lego creater, so many of my creations blew up because one tiny brick was not properly attatched, took so long to find em.
I'm not sure what computer craft is, I only play on Xbox. Drivable vehicles and a road system would be a nice addition to when we break away from pc though!

It's a mod that gives you computers, mining bots, color-coded wiring, and a few more awesome things. It works like redstone, but a wire will only connect to a wire of the same color. That means lines can be right beside each other, they can also go on walls and ceilings, it helps keep machines extremely compact.
You can program computers and bots to do all sorts of cool things. For example, you can set up a door so you have to type the correct password on the computer to open the door. The programming grants a lot of freedom as well, and ComputerCraft has its own high-level coding language, so it's not that complicated to write a program. People have even written simple games for it, like Snake.
It would be complex to craft. It would takes tons upon tons of resources, and you'd have to craft smaller parts into larger parts and then larger parts into bigger parts still until you could fit 9 huge pieces into the crafting bench to produce this monstrosity. Then you'd need a huge area to put it in.
And then you could saw your map in half.
It'd make a great way to re-pay Gearbox for the Minecraft easter egg in Borderlands 2
True, true, but I think Thor was a more recognizable icon of Borderlands than anything in BL2 was.
I was mostly kidding anyway. I'd love to have that monstrosity in my world, but not as a functioning machine!
You do realize that no one would force you to use these things, they would just be nice to have. And none of these things build stuff for you, just broaden the possibilities
I must be weird because when he said mining machines I imagined a modified piston that mined blocks in front of it instead of pushing them. It would no more break the game than cobblestone generators break the game. It would allow for cobblestone generators that drop blocks instead of forcing you to mine it yourself, but that is no big deal. You could push it into new areas, but that would only make a long unlit trail where monsters spawn leading to your machine. This spawns more monsters instead of avoiding them.
a self-propelled device that is fully contained would not be that bad, but really I could not see using it since there would need to be guidance issues unless it just widened areas around rail tracks. A utility mob would also have guidance problems unless it had really interesting behavior.
Secondly there are mining machines in minecraft. they are called TNT cannons. I have been clearing stuff out with those for a while. Aiming is a pain, but it is a fun way to mine as long as you do not mind blowing yourself up once in a while by accident.

And how exactly do you make a TNT cannon? Do you have any screen shots?
cannons are rather simple. what you really need is a pool of water so the tnt does not destroy the cannon then a line if tnt that all has the redstone activate it at one time. finally you have your ammo that is tnt activated after the line and dropped in the right place and with the right timing to aim it. When the first tnt set explodes it pushes the ammo away and it explodes doing some mining. similar mining devices consist of a deep 3x3 pit and a lever at the top. this just drops the tnt placed by the lever as fast as it is placed (or pushed with pistons) and digs a wide pit straight down. Far easier to aim, but less versatile and entertaining.
This is a vid on the computer version making one a lot like one of mine, but with a full circle of death instead of the lines I prefer, but it clearly shows the concept. For mining I would suggest using less tnt for all parts.
Making one in the nether requires careful planning and lots of obsidian.
The game's purpose is what you make it.

Things like bigger multi-person boats and some kind of airship? Yeah. No mining machines though.

Programmable robots?
Computers?
Flying machines (when you can fly like Superman already)?
If you automate everything, how can you say you're "playing" the game?
