First of all, Mushrooms don't grow in lit areas. So if light is hitting them, you'll notice they wont grow very much.
Secondly, it is best to grow them in the dark, or with very little light.
It is best if you find a large amount and plant them on the ground. In an wide open area - also I've noticed that Mushrooms tend to grow a bit faster on Stone.
Just make a giant dark room and the mushrooms should do the rest. Mushrooms spread on cobble as well so I used cobble half slabs so mobs wouldn't spawn. The mushrooms sort of look funny floating in the air, but they still spread. Hope this helps.
Use redstone torches to light the area so you can still see what you're doing. Dark enough for mushrooms to spread, light enough to see.
Otherwise yeah, just plant mushrooms and leave them be.
For when you get your farm working i noticed dumping a bucket of water on the mushrooms turns them all to drops and makes it very convenient for harvesting(when pistons come out you can make a much more controlled variation.
Just be careful i havent been able to find the right combination of enough light for them to grow/spread and enough light so mobs dont spawn... I have had many a creeper spawn in my shroom shed. I suggest the slab suggestion by aurospace creeper for a quick fix.
There are no giant mushrooms in Minecraft 360 Edition yet.
Mushrooms spread to adjacent blocks when the light level is low. (6 or lower i think). So the optimal placement would be like so:
They spread prettly quickly. I like to use cobblestone under the mushrooms because it makes identifying where to replant easier. Plus if you raise the mushrooms 1 block you can use water to gather them all and not have to replant.
Don't know why the screen shot is so dark, but its increadibly bright. No mobs at night bright.
After I built my mushroom farm, I started randomly planting them under trees. Plant one under each tree. Walk away for a little bit, come back and they have turned into two or three. Before you know it, they have spread everywhere.
My shroom farm
No mobs ever in the farm. Is waayyyy brighter than it looks in the pic. Find some red mushrooms, and build this. There is a torch 2-blocks under with a trap door and a glass block on top for light. No mobs have ever surprised me from showing up in there.
Red ones are by far easiest and safest to grow imo.
Brilliant Tutorial Mate!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!! I for one am gonna copy it. The mob trap is a real nice touch IMO +1.. Now, if we could stack Mushroom Stew and Bread it would be a whole new game Anyone ever eat mushroom stew IRL???
Heres the farm I use (just remade it on pc) Mushrooms grow in light levels 12 and lower (they grow faster in light lvl 5) But I get more than enough mushrooms from this type of room than I need for Soup. Can post screen from xbox version just thought it was easier while I was on the comp.
The auto-flushing farms are pretty cool, I liked the video Rocky5 posted.
A simpler, manual mushroom house is pretty easy if you know the rules. As FayzedNZ mentioned, mushrooms will grow in light levels 12 and lower (I don't think there is any good evidence that they grow any faster in even lower light, however). What we need, then, is to get the light 12 or less, but keep it 8 or more so that hostile mobs don't spawn (hostile mobs need light of 7 or less to spawn, this is measured at the floor).
The solution is to build a 2-block high room, and knock out recessed torches in the ceiling every so often. Torches are light level 14, so the floor underneath will be level 12. Throw a normal wooden door on it, and put a couple of blocks over the top so the door doesn't get direct sunlight.
I've confirmed that this simple room grows mushrooms just fine (not super fast, but fine).
i tried the video but the water flow doesnt make them come out .. they end up just getting stuck in trench.
I havent watched the video, but from the sounds of things, your trench isnt flowing and is just still (infinite source) Looking at the pic from the vid, it comes down the channel and washes them into the trench make sure your channel is long enough so the water doesnt flow into the trench from up top
