I have been wondering this for a while now. I got a few tree's underground but grass wont grow! How do i get grass way underground where there is no grass??
The only way to get grass to grow underground is to make a tunnel back up to the surface so sunlight can hit the area where you want grass, as well as all the dirt blocks on the path grass will 'follow' down there. No matter how well lit an area is, grass won't spread unless sunlight can hit it.
You need a skylight, too.
EDIT: unless bonemeal works too? o_O I thought bonemeal only grew shrubs on dirt, I didn't think it converted a dirt block to a grass block.
I've never tried using bonemeal for grass but it might work since shrubs only grows on grass blocks not dirt, otherwise try getting sunlight in there or wait for enchantments to come out then use a silktouch tool to get grass blocks.
I can confirm that you dont need a skylight or sunlight at all. I have a world that is 17 blocks underground and I had to make a dirt stairway all the way to the surface with dirt and wait for the grass to finally spread to my lair. I use torches and glowstone to keep it lit up so the grass grew. It took a very long time to finally spread (I only used a 1x1 dirt stairway) but eventually it did spread and now it looks much more appealing down in my lair.

Really? I could never get grass to grow unless I had sunlight. Maybe I underestimated the brightness of the area I was trying to grow in.
Oh well, I'll redact my post about sunlight then.
The wiki has full details on light requirements and all that but the info here pretty much covers it.
Another way is to get a shovel with silk touch (pick with silk touch might work too) and collect grass blocks. Mix the grass blocks with dirt blocks indoors, light appropriately, and boom - easy grass.
I suppose this is easier to do if you're playing snapshot builds since xp and enchanting are both revamped (such that it's far more feasible to get high level enchants on more gear).

you could always make a pillar up to the surface where grass is and take out every other block. What i mean is grass, empty space, grass, empty space, grass, etc...
Grass will grow to blocks adjacent to other grass blocks and this means even one below and above it. I've only done that once and wasn't very far underground. However note this was not attempted in this current update. So if they did change something with grass blocks, it may or may not work. It did work before. Worth a try though.:D
Another way to go about it. Just make sure there is light and no water covering the block you want to spread it to, mainly no water, as grass will grow in 0 light it seems, but at a lesser rate maybe... unsure about that though. hmm.. Just like someone else mentioned it doesn't have to be sunlight though.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
i always use a pick with silk touch to gather grass blocks, cover the place in dirt, place a torch/glowstone/jackolantern every 5th block then put a grass block near every 3rd light source.
found out, if trying to make grass cover long tunnels. it is best to get near the edge of the spreading grass and remove/replace the dirt block from time to time it is like it forces it to update quicker.

+Torches
+Grass connected to dirt
+Be standing in chunk radius
For the tree
+Atleast a 10x10x10 Room
+Bonemeal (Not needed just makes it go faster)
+Stand in chunk radius
Should work
You need a skylight, too.

Ya, at least in my experience
