So I was mining for diamond and gold deep below and thought of something that I'd like to know. Has it ever been published by Mojang how much of each mineral or precious stone there is per randomly generated world?
It cannot be totally random since then you'd see worlds with either disproportionate amounts of rare minerals and world with almost no diamond so there must be some percentages or something like a diagram that shows how much of any mineral or stone there is likely to be underground or in a mountain.
Asking because this may determine how much if any at all diamond or gold should one use for decorative block, tools, and armor.
Also: I read it is possible to "grow" diamond. But I wasn't sure if that was a mod, a bug exploit, or if possible at all. Anyone know about this?

I am actually glad I cannot since I know it would defeat the purpose of mining for them, which is most of the fun, for me at least. If you check youtube for "farming diamonds in minecraft" it will show some videos, but its probably some mods.
Its true the game would be pretty cool if it had realistic physics but I am pretty sure the average computing power is not there yet. It may seem like since computers process so many awesome games they should be able to do realistic gravity and geology physics but realistic physics would take up way too much power and memory because in minecraft you can play in every corner of the 3d world, but the awesome graphics you see in other games usually isolate smaller areas and process them separetely then re-load them when you return without remembering the modifications you may have made.
I guess simple physics would be cool in the future. But that would get in the way of building without limitations.
It would be awesome to grow diamonds, but it would be to easy.
I think they should put physics in minecraft, Earthquakes wich fill up the caves, make new caves, and spawn new ore's. Would be great.
There's a way on pc to see a map overlay of where diamonds are on your map. There's usually nowhere near as many diamonds as iron, which might as well be limitless, considering how common it is.
On Xbox, the most diamonds I've mined in one server is 79. IMO, I've barely scratched the total of diamond that exists in my world, while the world may be small, it has depth as well as surface area, and diamonds lie in there somewhere in the many parts I've yet to dig.
Even so, after so much digging, I've only found 79 diamonds but more stacks of iron ore than I can count off hand. So, while there's no way of knowing total ore counts on an Xbox server (that i know of) I think it safe to assume that diamond, lapis or gold is likely not going to be a major component in anyone's builds, but its feasible to build a structure out of iron blocks or obsidian for sure.
One thing I feel is often overlooked (since there's a dupe glitch in the game) is wool and dyes. You can make diamond looking blocks using wool, and lots of other cool colors too. I may be wrong, but I imagin the amount of wool you may collect is limited only by your chest space.
I think using some rough math, around 12000. Minecraft XBOX has 4096 chunks (16x16x256 areas), and there is an average of 3.097 diamond ore in a chunk according to the wiki, so 4000x3 is around 12000.

I do find them quite regularly when I carefully make a path all the way down until I touch the indestructible surface. I personally found better results finding diamonds when I dig through solid rock methodically.
I found plenty of huge cave systems that are very easy to become lost in. There is a danger in that because Creepers and other monsters will see you quickly and you lose health and have to move around.
But, when I go down where solid rock is I make sure to dig straight as far as the pick goes. That way you can see 4 blocks on each side per each block you destroy. Then, if I have not seen gold or diamond, I make sure to move sideways the distance of two blocks, to make sure I do not waste mining when one of the sides will already be showing the block's contents. I repeat the same process. Ideally I found it is best to make long corridors of two blocks high so you can walk through them and make regular holes left and right.
Another fun way I found. Is when I am at the bottom I start digging through all of the stone surrounding me but only on the X axis the space I dig is only 1 block tall but in horizontal directions I make sure to dig through everywhere so it ends up looking like I am at the center of empty circular disk.
Curious what methods you guys use to find diamonds fastest, or most efficiently.

On the subject of growing Diamonds, you cannot. No ores in the game magically reappear once they've been mined.

Edit: I have 12, and lost another 20 in a cave...
Edit2: Messed up a bit of math...
