This is an open letter to any staff of Minecraft/Mojang/4J Studios who may end up seeing this. The console edition is being massively held behind by the world generation size. People have been clamoring for years now that it needs an upgrade; it just isn't enough.
So let's list some reasons as to why this proposed idea should be put into motion:
1. With the new content updates, it is extremely difficult- if not impossible - as I don't believe it's been done (or at least documented yet) -to generate a world that includes at least one of every single possible item.
I mean -everything-. Every biome, every structure, every undergound cave type, dungeon type, village, type, temples, woods - all of it. You don't have to worry about this in the current-gen consoles excluding Wii U, nor the PC version. Even the Pocket Edition has infinite worlds.
2. Some people enjoy exploration more than creation/staying put.
This is a big one. Some people sometimes want to leave the dwelling they've spent so long making, to go out and explore the beyond, but then be able to come back and reminisce/ nab some extra supplies they left for a rainy day. In all complete honesty, ONE Minecraft world is all anyone should ever need for their entire time playing the game, as the infinite generation could be used as a tool for starting fresh, without losing ANY progress, simply by moving far enough away, and getting lost in a new amazing world just off the path from your home.
3. Resources are very limited.
However, your mileage may vary for this one. Although a world over 800x800 blocks and at least 64 blocks deep should be plenty for one person to gather up enough resources for any extended amount of time, PEOPLE PLAY THIS GAME WITH THEIR FRIENDS, AND SOMETIMES IN LARGE GROUPS. There just is not enough world in one map for eight people to truly get into a real deep elongated playthrough, as eventually, everyone WILL run out of mine-able material. I personally have experienced fatigue while mining and searching for resources in a map with only three people regularly playing, because we had explored all the larger cave areas we could find, after scouring every inch of the map. Strip mining should never be forced upon the player, and this makes it more exhausting for people to collect and gather to make their large empires and cities lined with gold.
At the least, there should be even a SLIGHT upgrade to the map size, - even 1080x1080 just like the Xbox One/PS4's small option - anything. Just enough to spawn in at least one of everything. As it currently stands, there just isn't enough room, at all.
At the VERY VERY least, there should be an option for the player to be able to choose which biomes he or she would prefer to play on, without spoiling the layout of the map itself, this could even work similar to how customizing the Superflat World works.
As a longtime Minecraft supporter, owner/purchaser of three versions, and buying and gifting at least three OTHER versions, with plans to eventually get the Vita edition, I implore the staff of 4J to at the very least consider even the slightest world generation upgrade.
I have attached a poll, to see if any readers of this post in passing will voice their opinion as well.
Best regards, and hoping for the best outcome for all.
Actually, even WITH outdated and limited hardware, that isn't what is keeping these versions from having better worlds. I've done quite a bit of googling and searching and research on this subject, and there just isn't any clear-cut answer as to just why they can't give us better terrain options. Even a customizer like I said if they can't increase the size for whatever arbitrary reason. I'm sure bugfixes and content updates/catching the gameplay up to PC likely takes priority with development, but these basic square necessary features are long, long overdue. It was okay back when the game was still parallel to 1.0-1.6, but now it just isn't enough.
The Wii U isn't THAT much more powerful than 360/PS3. In fact, it has a weaker CPU, which Minecraft is dependent on. And the save file size limit is also smaller on Wii U than it is on other consoles (512MB, and a Classic World can be up to 80MB)

All power and processing issues aside, what is the justification of not having a world customizer at the very least?
I'm content with the current world sizes, but an upgrade would always be welcomed.
I'm pretty sure it's the save file limits put in place by Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo that are restricting world sizes. Many people will argue that it's the RAM, but the chunk-based rendering system exists solely for that reason - so large worlds could be had without needing/consuming terabytes. I support this with the fact that the PC version has seemingly-infinite worlds but is, by default, set to use just 512MB RAM, if less (in the launcher's JVM Arguments).
Of course, I could be wrong, in which case I'd hope someone with more knowledge on this subject can clarify.
The save file size limits are an absolutely asinine excuse for small worlds. The file size of a world should be limited only by the free space available on the user's hard drive. If a player doesn't want his world to take up all 32 gigs on the deluxe set, then he can either get himself an external drive [i use a 64gig external usb flash nub, works perfectly fine, got it for 20 bucks.] or as i have stated, mojang can give the users more creative freedom over world customization [maybe even including a manual world dimensions editor]

Oh, I agree. It's entirely up to the user if they want to explore large areas of the world, knowing that, if they go far enough, they could see the world size creep in to the gigabytes. Then again, you'd have to try really hard to do even that - I tested this on the PC version by flying in one direction until I was at X30000, and the world size was still just ~347MB compared to the 862x862 worlds of the PS3, which rarely exceed 16MB (I'm not sure of the world size on the 360/Vita/U).
Assuming this save file limit really exists, it seems that, for the PS4 version, 4J got around it by having a single world split in to multiple save files that are usually titled something like "World Data 1, World Data 2," and total about 70MB each (this, then, begs the question: why hasn't it been done on other platforms if it is a potential workaround and gateway to bigger worlds?).
If a limit was not present then I don't see the need for 4J to do this, unless splitting world data in to multiple save games/files was necessary from a technical/programming standpoint (much like the PC version's saves). I'd really like to look more in to it to find some truth, but alas, I'm neither a 4J dev or Sony insider. Just as you've said, googling does not lead me to a clear answer. :/

It just doesn't make sense as to why 4J would do this intentionally to their users. It would be like a cable company throttling their users' internet connection because they have a smaller house than a neighbor who has the same internet!

I don't think they're limiting us purposefully. I believe it comes down to time and money.
Are they guaranteed more sales (more profit) if they put forth the time and money necessary to rework some rather low-level areas of their Minecraft engine, assuming it is possible at all?

Since I know personally some people whose sole reason of not owning a console version of the game is the terrain size/generation, I can say 100% definite they would guarantee at least a bit more if they took better care of it. It would definitely generate more revenue than adding the battle minigame.

To answer your question regarding why it hasn't been done is simply because the studio more than likely wants to move on to next gen, like many other companies have done or want to do. Now I really don't know much technical stuff so I could be wrong and it honestly could come down to hardware limitations but from what I've read what I said above seems more plausible.

I just can't get behind the idea of it being a hardware limitation when 4JSteve pointed only to file size limits:
Save game size is a trivial issue! It should be up to the consumer (users) as to how their memory is allocated. If they don't want huge worlds, THEN DON'T VENTURE OFF. Upgrade your hard drives. Do literally anything. It's not like Minecraft Worlds are really that bad in size when in comparison entire games are going beyond the scope of 50 gbs a POP!

While larger worlds would be nice, there are limitations from the hardware. If we have larger console worlds, then the game will lag really bad and there have been measures to stop it.
I just got the Wii U version of Minecraft (my first and only version) a month or two ago and so far I am happy with the world size. My second random seed had all 6 tree types within 200-300 blocks of spawn, and that's primarily what I was hoping for.
In thinking about the different available sizes on XB1 and PS4, though, it would be really exciting to have a 5000x5000 world to explore.
I'm wondering if there will be Minecraft for the Nintendo Switch (likely) and if it will be available within a year of launch (I hope so - Wii U version 3 years after the console launch is silly), and if there will be bigger maps (questionable - the portable nature of the console means big hard drives add cost, although if it supports SD cards then the console cost can be kept down with a more modest internal hard drive).
Is that a good enough reason to not put the effort into increasing the size of WiiU/360/PS3 maps? Aging console generations?
Minecraft: Switch Edition has officially been announced and confirmed for a 2017 release. However, unfortunately it's currently unknown whether it will feature larger worlds.
well i think it depends on the specs, news says its weaker then the xbox one, but more powerful then the wii u, so it could be like the vita version meaning a bigger world but a shorter view distance then the xbox one or ps4 (but the vita has a small world and short view distance of course)
